The guys in the video don't stop.

Scrodzilla 10-22-11 04:03 PM

Why would they? They're clearly participating in a race.

CharneK 10-22-11 08:25 PM

Scrod, I would like to drop below 70 gi.

Right now I'm at 48/17, new cog for 48/19 or new ring for 44 or 43/17?

Price difference between ring and cog isn't too much of an issue.

Scrodzilla 10-22-11 08:52 PM

Bigger gears result in less wear on your chain and a smoother drivetrain in general. 48/19 FTW.

redpear 10-22-11 08:56 PM

Plus it looks BAMF

yummygooey 10-22-11 08:56 PM

I ran both 48/19 and 44/17. They feel the same, so I just stick with 48/19 'coz:

I suspected the wear thing, so yeah, should be cheaper too. Hope my shop of choice has one in stock, I hate waiting.

dearest scrod,
why is the road forums section so lame?
i try reading some threads, but then i'm like... "lame"
-max

jimmytango 10-23-11 01:41 AM

I think it's because they take the forum more seriously...

+1 on the 'brakeless doesn't mean you skid'. I really only skid if I'm effing around with my friends. I never do it while commuting, and I mean never. I just keep an eye out on the lights and the intersections and control my speed based on what's in front of me. If you're riding a ratio you're comfortable with then it won't take much time at all to get used to what the dos and dont's are, homebrewk.

Scrod,
I was looking at Faz's Kagero and saw he's 53/15. Am I just a bitter @ss or does a ratio like that, for someone who doesn't get on the track, scream "trying too hard"? or is it just me?

I'm apparently a bitter @ss too. If the bike parts are nice, I go ahead and assume they did it for looks because they want a huge chainring. Even worse are the people that do 53/22 or some crazy huge cog to compensate. Unless of course you can tell the bike was cobbled together with whatever they had around. In which case two thumbs up! But usually it's someone who thinks big chainrings look cool, and they have no idea what a proper gear is. /bitter @ss.

Case example #1 (not my bike)

A perfectly reasonable drivetrain:

Same bike, after "improvements":

Running a gear ratio like that posted above does have its benefits because (as I just posted right her eon this very page) bigger gears cause less wear on your chain and result in a smoother drivetrain. I think that dude just did it for looks though. There's also NO WAY he ever puts his hands out on the horns with that setup.

Regarding Faz's Kagero: 53/15 brakeless on the street is just stupid.

I wouldn't know. I have no reason to look at the road forum.

hamfoh 10-23-11 07:51 AM

hey it's the guy's bike that me and scrod were semi-teasin' to on that other site!

regarding faz: that's what I thought. glad it's not because I have a vagina for legs or something

Other non-BF forums think we're lame, too.

Scrod, remember this pic from the Foer rims? I think it was a friend of yours? Anyway - can you ask him where he got such a little bird sticker or do you know? The large one on my soma is the smallest I've found and it's too big as is.

yummygooey 10-23-11 08:05 AM

That's Alex's Leader (lilcphoto). He makes them.

/notscrod

hamfoh 10-23-11 08:08 AM

damn I remember talking to him about stickers not long ago and he said he could only do text!

/end derail

Scrodzilla 10-23-11 08:09 AM

I'm fairly certain Alex can make just about anything, not just text.

Awesome. Thanks guys!

ddeadserious 10-23-11 11:31 AM

Not trying to steal business here or anything, but I can cut vinyl decals at a very reasonable price too, if Alex is busy or something.

jimmytango 10-23-11 11:42 AM

Hey Scrod, you have any experience with pulling trailers? I don't have a car and I'm sick of getting cabs or recruiting friends to help me with my drumset on public transit. If I pack it tightly, I can probably get it in a 5x4 area if it's tied down. I've been looking at the two Surly rigs. Any advice?

In before "just play a smaller instrument."

Scrodzilla 10-23-11 11:49 AM

I've never pulled a trailer and have no idea. My advice is to ask here:

jimmytango 10-23-11 11:54 AM

But, you're the guru of all bike things...

Jk. Thanks.

Note he's brakeless too.

Also, might as well ask a question while I'm in here.

When you put a rear wheel on (fg of course) what do you do to get the chain tension right?
