Hey Scrod,
I have some time off next weekend and am planning to get out of Providence for a day or two and was thinking about taking the train to Boston and then biking up to Beverly and visiting the shop on Saturday if it isnt raining out. If you have ever biked into the city any routes you suggest besides the one through Lynn and Salem/Peabody?

I've never ridden to the city so I'm not really sure of the best route. Google will put you on Rt. 107 through Lynn into Salem but it's not a good route at all. Ghetto, ****ty roads and terrifying sections of multi-lane, maniacal traffic.

Scrod: whats your favorite way to make horchata?

There are a few ways of making it using cooked rice but I usually use this easy recipe:
  • 1 cup of uncooked white long-grain rice
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of skim milk (or unflavored rice milk if you're vegan)
  • 1/2 tbsp pure vanilla extract (no artificial crap)
  • 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp of light agave nectar (or to taste)

Put the rice and water into a blender and mix until the rice just begins to break up, (about a minute). Let the rice and water mixture hang out (covered) at room temperature for 2-3 hours. Strain the rice water into a pitcher and toss the rice (I use a layer of cheesecloth in a small wire colander). Stir the rest of the stuff into the rice water. Chill and stir well before serving over ice.

Hey Scrod,

What's the recommended chain tension for a fixed gear road bike? I mainly use it for daily commute and daily general riding/for fun.

Also when are the V2' straps & Odyssey Twisted pedals will be in stock? I need a new pair of Straps and pedals!

Hey Scrod,

You know anything about good quick release fenders? Meaning could you or the NotScrod Consortium recommend any?

Having a little bit of slack will keep your drivetrain running much more smoothly and prevent your chain from wearing prematurely (see my PedalRoom links below for visual reference).

Thanks Scrod!

Scrod, have ever rode off-road on SS/...FG(?)
And if you would, what handlebar style would you prefer?

Scrodzilla 10-13-12 08:23 PM

I never have but would like to. I'd most likely go with risers.

David Broon 10-14-12 07:01 PM

I might suggest these, too, especially if you've got a set of hoods or drop bar brake levers kicking around.

You should make a custom fat head of yourself.

Dear Scrod,
I just bought a Selle Turbo saddle and I have heard mixed reviews concerning the dye bleeding onto the riders pants/shorts. Is this also your experience with this saddle?

Scrodzilla 10-15-12 12:24 PM

I've never had any trouble with mine, even after riding in the rain.

It's really gonna depend on what you wear too though.

I rocked some grey Chrome knickers and they got a little marked up. But they got marked up by a lot of different saddles. I didn't care, but do keep that in mind. Definitely not enough to turn me off of the Turbo. Great looking, quality saddle.

hamfoh 10-17-12 10:19 AM

what rimtape are you using for your a23s?

Scrodzilla 10-17-12 11:39 AM

VeloPlugs.

17mm Velox works nicely too.

hamfoh 10-17-12 11:43 AM

is there a veloplug that fits h+son that you know of? I tried some on a previous set (formation face I think) and they no likey the drillings

I'm curious about this too, I've got an archetype on the way and would like to use them.

Nagrom_ 10-17-12 09:51 PM

Reds didn't work on my FF's for what its's worth.

Scrod,
Been on the lookout for a decent crankset used on ebay/craigslist. I see some DuraAce, Campy and Sugino 75 cranksets minus the chainring in the 100-150 range. Am I missing something or is there a reason to stay away from buying used cranks or any particular models of those makes? It seems strange to see Sram 300 for a similar price range when the Dura And Campy items are treated like unicorn horn.

Or if you have any informative links. Sanity check:twitchy:

Scrodzilla 10-22-12 09:49 AM

You need to be careful when buying used cranks sight unseen because the BB interface or pedal threads (or both) could be damaged.

If you're not stuck on 144, go with the s300's. I have a pair on my ftp that I haven't gotten an opportunity to ride that much, but they're solid for what they are.

Got mine for $100 when I bought them a while ago too.
