I have a coating of mud/rust? coating the inside of my seat tube because I rode in the rain a couple of times. Nothing to worry about right?
|
Nice knowing you dude.
That will happen to any steel frame, even if you never ride in the rain. |
On a side note, I've heard of people using shotgun barrel brushes to clean stuff like that out. Do you ever do anything like that?
|
Ok cool. That's what I thought.
Thanx |

I guess I should've asked this too: do you think it's worth it to put frame saver in an older frame that's already showing surface rust and paint flaking in spots? Stupid Trek and their stupid half-assed internal cable routing...

My late 80's Trek is flakin' and bubblin' mighty bad. Didn't wipe it down enough after all the sweat I poured over it. |
Frame Saver helps to prevent new rust from forming kn the inside of a frame, it doesn't magically stop existing rust.

Mr Scrod,
I'm looking for a quill stem with a removable top section for changing out bars easily like what Sheldon's page describes as a "Pop-top" stem. Do you know anyone that makes something like this? http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=290553 |
So I've been poking around the internet and I'm not able to find any quill stems with a removable face plate that don't look like industrial mountain bike stems. :(
|
The stock quill stem that comes on a Fuji Feather has a removable faceplate and looks like this:
http://static.lfgss.com/attachments/...-dscn6785t.jpg I know it's a knockoff of another existing stem but can't recall what it is. Also, there's the 3T Motus: http://www.euroasiaimports.com/produ...18_general.jpg |
Nitto UI quill stems have removable face plates. Some older Ritchey (Nitto made) and Salsa stems do as well. All are Cro-Mo.
|
Dimension makes one as well, 26.0 clamp.
|
The deda murex has a removable faceplate. Or you can look for older profile design stems. The cinelli frog is another one. But most of these are pretty ugly in my opinion.

Yes. Dimension makes one that looks like this, but with the Dimension D logo on the side. I'm sure it's the same stem that comes on the Fuji Feather.
Edit: Nevermind, I'm drunk today. You can see the stem he has here, which does have kind of an industrial MTB look. |
QBP (manufacturer of Dimension-branded parts) shows no trace of that stem existing.
|
Yeah I was just trying to find it and couldn't. I posted a link to his PR in my edit above. The stem looks exactly like the Profile Design one, but it is branded Dimension(and is polished rather than black powdercoat), even though I can't find it on QBP either. He got it a year or so ago.
|
I thought leader made one too
|
Jeez. Apparently they do (or did):
http://coghouse.com/leaderquillstem.aspx It's not in their current catalog so it may be old stock. |
Bike Works in Philly got a huge gift from Fuji a few years ago that look exactly like theDimension stem powder coated black, but branded Fuji. Usually stuff like that from Fuji means they were no longer on the market.
|
Wow thank you all so much for the input!
I love the clean simple look of old quill stems but the biggest drawback is the fact that most quill stems make it a half hour long process to change out bars, unless you've got stems for each bar. I found this one on the eBay that I think may be a close match to the Fuji one mentioned here. http://i50.tinypic.com/35crm2f.jpg more here: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...d=330848541466 The leader one also looks like a nice option. Ill post pics if I settle on one of these! |
There's a promotion at planet x of stems for 15% off, they have some models there with removable faceplates, you can buy it next to nothing
http://planet-x-bikes.co.uk/c/q/stems |
Im pretty sure the Leader stems were just rebranded Deda stems
|
On the contrary, they were rebranded generic stems like the one found on the Fuji Feather.
