The Paddy Wagon comes stock with an FSA (or RPM - which is most likely the same thing with a different logo) sealed cartridge bearing BB.

To answer the question of price vs quality, I've never had any trouble with any "low end" sealed BB so I don't see any real reason to spend more than $40 for one.

There's no real way to say how long a BB will last because there are too many varying factors.

Fwiw, my beater has a loose ball bearing bb and its from more than 20 years old, when i cleaned and regreased it it felt exactly the same as my sealed shimano bb

Yeah I've got nothing against loose ball BB's, I've serviced and overhauled countless ones on my retro roadies in past times. Just can't be F'd dickin around with all that stuff nowadays when I can just do a one out , one in swap in a matter of minutes.

scrod do you have any experience with dia compe 139 levers? how well they work ect? and if they would fit on the fyxation rodeo pursuit bars?

they have a 24 clamp but im not sure what the diameter of the rodeos are next to the clamp area.

They work very well but aren't as compatible with bars that have a large amount of down sweep at the tops (like Nitto RB-021s). Rodeo Pursuits don't have much drop so you may be ok.

Any shop can get them very easily. Let me know if you have any trouble.

If you're careful.

Hey Scrod,

Does it matter at all that I can twist my spacers after my stem is installed and all that?

They spin pretty easily on my Leader, but hardly budged on my Raleigh until I flipped the stem. No long term effects or anything like that? Thanks.

Scrodzilla 01-18-13 05:41 PM

If your headset is preloaded correctly, the spacers shouldn't move at all.

Your top cap is most likely bottoming out on the top of the steerer (there should be a minimum of 3mm between the top of the steerer and the top of your stem). Use a small spacer above your stem to fix it.

Somebody posted up a link for 2012 Cinelli Vigorelli's for $525 on the great sale thread. Im a fan of the color way but i dont know much about the vigorellis.

I know you stock the other color way in your shop. Any info/input you can give me about the frame?

Mumonkan 01-19-13 04:32 PM

are the 2011 722's painted or powdercoated?

my frame is accumulating so many chips in the paint just from road debris its driving me crazy

I haven't ridden one but they're supposed to be really stiff.

A few people here have them. Maybe ask in the Cinelli thread?

Heya Scrod...long time reader ...first time asker......

So My off the rack paddy wagon came with some kind of (most likely) low end loose ball BB. i've swapped out the wheels to a velocity set with sealed bearings, and now the BB is the only crappy loose ball component left. After 1500 k's it still feels OK, but I'd be happier with a sealed unit. Question is, (A) is it worth buying a higher end more exxy one or just settling for a basic 20 odd $ one and replacing it more frequently as time dictates. (B) I know this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" Q, but what sort of life should I expect out of a sealed unit that doesn't really see much wet use other than when i get caught out unexpectedly?

Cheers

Antipodean dave

Just one of the less than a handful of owners here chiming in. The BB & hubs that came with mine were all sealed, they all came off the rack like that since the initial launch in 2007 (the metallic blue model, I happen to have a grey one). Formulas & a OEM sealed cartridge BB like that of a UN54 w/ 2 metal cups were standard issue all around although OEM branding/ naming could've changed in between generations (ex. FSA Gossamer = FSA Vero).

Hey scrod, looking at getting foot-retention for my new bike, i'll get cages and straps if I have to but I have a feeling they'll destroy my shoes. How do those thick seat-belt style straps go? Planning on getting clipless pedals for serious rides, the straps will just be for a 5 mile commute into uni and short rides.

Mumonkan 01-21-13 12:00 AM

$125 sound like a lot for powdercoat on a frame or is that a normal price range?

this is the joint:

Clips and straps don't destroy my shoes. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Does the price include stripping/prep? If so, that's a decent price and by the looks of their site, they do really good work.

Mumonkan 01-21-13 10:25 AM

cool beans, thats the price for strip/prep and the same silver and clearcoat

(though if i go in there and look at all their color samples ill probably choose a different color, they look so purdy)
