For real, why you so scared of spokes?

I agree with both calv and seau. Angie's 28h radial Aerohead is super light and has proven to be really durable - but she only weight 110 lbs. I would never want it on one of my bikes. My 32h A23 laced 2x is plenty light and amazingly strong.

This current "low spoke/need to make my wheels as light as possible" fad is a little ridiculous.

evilcryalotmore 11-09-11 08:51 AM

is it overkill for someone light as me to run more then 32 spokes?

No, not at all. In fact, I'd suggest lacing up some 48 spoke wheels, 5x.

evilcryalotmore 11-09-11 09:04 AM

I have a 27 inch wheelset i wanna re build. Does anyone know of a good 36 hole 27 inch rim?

Scrodzilla 11-09-11 09:12 AM

Here.

If they're for a fixed gear it will probably more cost effective and less hassle to just buy these.

just wondering how far i could go down on weight in the front. My rear wheel will definitely be 32 3x.

seau grateau 11-09-11 12:42 PM

So reducing spoke count is going to shave off, what, maybe 10g each? You could get the same weight savings by removing loose change from your pockets, or buy picking up a lighter tire if you're obsessed with rotational weight. Neither of these options will compromise the strength of your wheels.

jaded_fable 11-09-11 01:58 PM

Is it considered jackass to ride with a deep profile rim in the back, and a shallower one in the front? Having a deep v, or something similar on the front for someone who isn't a Clydesdale just seems excessive (though I suppose it could be argued that deep v's are excessive in general)

Scrodzilla 11-09-11 03:48 PM

If so, my lady's a total jackass:

(that's a Deep V rear/Aerohead front)

Definitely not a jackass build, but why did you go with a deeper rim in the back? From what you said earlier, she's a lightweight, so I wouldn't think she needed the strength of a Deep V in the back. Just wondering.

Scrodzilla 11-09-11 03:57 PM

That's what she wanted, so that's what she built.

SCROD,

today I acquired some white cinelli mash tape, the one that has all of the lines on it that kinda looks like a map.

should I put it on my all city or my jamis? both bikes could use it but neither necessarily needs it. for pictures of the bikes please refer to pedalroom, i think there is a link in my sig. thank you

Scrodzilla 11-09-11 05:13 PM

I think it would look better on your Big Block, but why waste tape? Wait until it needs it.

calbob76 11-09-11 05:18 PM

Good point. I'm just really bad at being patient

calv 11-09-11 09:22 PM

What did you ever do with your old Omniums?

I ran that rim setup on the pista. Deep V rear/Aerohead front.
Took me 4 years to wreck those rims. Don't miss the wider rim profile with how windy it has been.

Sold the arms on the RG site a while back.

EpicSchwinn 11-10-11 03:58 PM

Just going to bother you again about checking on that wheelset since you're probably at work :P I've been scouring the internet looking for somebody else that's weighed them to no avail. Sun doesn't even list the rim on their website or I would've just calculated it myself.

Scrodzilla 11-10-11 04:36 PM

Sorry man...it's been a hectic day. I think they're a little heavier than you want:

front = 1009g, rear = 1005g (with rim tape and track nuts)

EpicSchwinn 11-10-11 04:47 PM

Yeah, that's a little over what I'm looking for. Thanks a lot for taking time to weigh those though!

homebrewk 11-10-11 07:52 PM

Scrod,

Is a Spingery Rev-X really not safe? Or is it just how you use it? (tricking)

ilikebikes 11-10-11 08:06 PM

Hi there Mr. Zilla. Wondering if you know anyone thats got a flask cage for my bike? Preferably stainless but will take chrome. Please let me know cause I'm not trying to pay 33 bones for a new one! ;0)

I really think it was just the first version that was known to explode at high speeds. I know it's common to joke about stuff exploding around here but I'm not kidding.
