Pure Fix Juliet
I am completely new to the scene as I've only owned stunt bikes as a child and a GT Mountain bike that's about 10 years old now, that has held up well. I really got my eye on the Pure Fix Juliet as my first single speed for my commute in Manhattan. Not very sure about the specs but from reading about it on this thread, people are saying the frame isn't very good and it's quite heavy.
Aesthetically, it's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. If I were to make any "mods" it'd be to definitely add rear brakes, and possibly swap to a bullhorn bar.
Weight isn't much of an issue (I'm reading it's about 22lbs) as I won't be lugging it up any stairs or anything, just from the parking garage to classes and back.
Besides the frame being bad, are there any real major reasons to not invest in this bike? I was able to find the bike for $325 shipped from a website and can't seem to find a deal any better than that for what I'm looking for (all black matte).

Spend the extra cash and get a decent frame from a company that actually has a team and wins races. If you get the State and upgrade the piss out of it and buy a new frame, you'll eventually have two bikes, one built from custom parts and a State as a solid backup instead of some POS hi-ten fixie factory. The video on their page should be enough to tell you how lame they are.
If you want to buy a **** bike on the cheap for purely aesthetics reasons, buy the PureSuck. If you actually want to get into riding bikes and learn more (I imagine you do since you posted on a forum), buy a decent bike. Doesn't have to be a State, just don't buy that Juliet.

Statebicycle looks great too. The problem with getting the state bike and "upgrading the piss out of it" and having two bikes is that, I just don't have the need for two bikes, or the funds. My budget is $400, but if the state bike is worth the extra $100 compared to the PureFix, looks doable.
Thanks

Do it. Even if you want only one bike now (its a slippery slope, man. I have six now, seemingly out of nowhere), its a better bike.
You spoke of modding it. You should start with a good base frame, instead of dressing up a poop frame with nice parts.

It's not going to be 22 lbs, 26+ is more in line with reality. Those wheels alone weigh 8+ pounds. I'd be hesitant to purchase anything from a company that uses product pictures with the saddle all jacked up like that.
Both State and Purefix are going to give you less for more, compared to anything from bikesdirect.
Idk if this qualifies as a "good base frame":

On Saturday, I Went into an LBS that used to be decent, they're now selling Pure Fix. They used to sell Bianchi and All-City, but have little to nothing left of those brands.
supply & demand = demand & supply, so if that's what people are buying, I can't really fault them.

Another thing for me is that, I don't want to be riding around a goldmine for would-be thieves in Manhattan. So it's one thing to be modding it up like crazy for a good ride, but I will also be away from my bike for hours at a time during classes and when I'm just out running errands on foot.

Don't leave it outside then.

What's your criteria for "good base frame" then? With the exception of the lugged fork, the welds look the same to me. Fork =/= frame. I'd consider both to be "good base" frames.

There is thay NY company named strada(?) Too that makes pick your color bikes, think they are around 400.
Not sure entirely of the quality but you could at least go to the store and test ride one unlike a state/purefix.

The shop I work at is selling them as something cheap and I built y first one up today and either the headset cups were not tight in the headtube. You could see them rock back and forth and up and down even when the headset was way overtightened.

Okay, so going by everyone's suggestions to basically stay away from Pure Fix, I'm currently looking at the Windsor; The Hour;
https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/...ehour_plus.htm
I'm being told the frame is solid on there, and overall a decent starter. Thoughts?

Probably a 54; with such a short inseam, I'm guessing you have long torso. It would be a good idea to do an online fit calculator, though; just in case.

twenty bucks says thats his pant length.

Give that a try. It's a calculator; you put junk in, you get junk out.
Do it right. Post your measurements and your results. Compare it to the geometry chart of the bikes you're looking at.

Haha. ok you did it right. But inseam is the least of your worries when it comes to bike fitting. That's like getting fitted for a tuxedo and only giving your waist size. You should really do the calculator so that you will feel good and not iffy about your online purchase.
