Oooooooohh

Today I had a customer get argumentative with me when he came in to have me install a set of Sugino Messenger cranks on his girlfriend's Kilo TT - which wouldn't be an odd request but the bike was a 44cm and the crank arms were 175mm. When I told him it was a pretty weird combination and would most likely be pretty uncomfortable to ride, he freaked out, yelling "the guy I bought these from didn't tell me they were 175mm!" before asking me if there was a way to make the crank arms shorter. Uhhhhhh.........

Can we rehash the tire thread debate to include tires with spider treads?

mathing is hard man.

what did he get pissed at you for, because you cant saw crankarms in half, mill 10mm off, weld them back together, and reforge them?

or because he realized hes an idiot?

Seriously! We always joke about having a GoPro running all the time and streaming a live feed somewhere on our site so people can experience the sheer insanity. I feel like I'm on a hidden camera reality show half the time anyway.

The best part was when I was like, "It says '175' right there on the back of the arms" and he just glared at me like he wanted me to burst into flames.

Thanks! Now I have a justification to get a white helmet so I can kit dope even more!

Of course you could make them shorter. He did not specify that he still wanted them to be functional crank arms!

Just trying to be helpful and open minded...

Those are spider knobbies, not spider treads.

Knobbies and treads are two different things for two different purposes.

Get it right man!

Crashed pretty bad today coming down Hamilton. Helmet is toast, and my jawbreakers are in pieces now. Shifters, shoulder, and arms took the majority of the damage. No broken bones, and everything still works.

My bar tape wasn't even damaged, and I'm pretty sure my Rd didn't even hit the ground.

What's a bike without some gnar on it? It's a survivor now!
I'm glad you made it out in one piece. Heal up!

Ahhh silly customers. We had a guy come in and get mad because we didn't have his estimate anymore for his insurance (because our system doesn't work that way and he had two copies of it anyway) and called one of our techs a racist and flipped out for no reason. However he later came back and apologized profusely but still people flip out over the dumbest stuff.

I find the best way to shorten a crank arm is to apply a good lubricant and as Frank Zappa sang "Ram it, ram it, ram it, ram it up your poopshoot"

LesterOfPuppets 01-29-16 02:27 AM

Lotsa crankarms been drilled, tapped and cut down, typically for super short under 150mm action though. Cheaper and easier just to sell those and get some 165s tho.

Messengers got a bit of a funky shape for that anyways.

hairnet 01-29-16 06:20 AM

We had a guy flip out because we didn't want to re-lace a rim he had "been riding on for 20 years". It's a cheap ass rim with a cheap hub, and it was ovalized. Dude wouldn't let it go, we showed how it was god damn egg shaped abd wobbly, plus it would cost less to get a new wheel. Only hours later of coming, going, and calling us, did he agree to buy another cheap $60 wheel. Is there a pain-in-the-ass-fee?

Takes a lot of guts to come back and say "I'm sorry. I was a petty ******* and should have acted better."

No idea why, I just saw it like this locked up while I was attending to a service call for a bike fleet I maintain. It wasn't the jankiest motorbike I've seen, especially because of that crank with the ratchet. I would love to have that bike with hydro brakes.

lol, my mistake.

Today I was supposed to buy Modest Mouse tickets but forgot about it and didn't get in until 30 minutes after the sale started and ended up with row 27. Not bad, but far from awesome. Grumble, grumble.

Got approved today for a new apartment, pretty excited about it. Main room is perfect for bike storage/workshop.

Nice! I also just signed a lease on a new pad with a basement -- super stoked for bike building and turning my guitar amp to 11 :thumb:

Today I realized that Performance Bike really doesn't have stuff that I need or want. I always convince myself that the next time I go, it will be better than the last, and they will have something that I need. It never happens.
