Went out and rode with some friends today!

First, I rode about 7 miles to the start point. Rode about 15 miles with the local group B riders. I had turned back and returned to the start point, where I met two more friends (both on singlespeeds) and we did another 35. The wind was killer! But we made it.

I switched to Panaracer Pasela Tourguards on the LHT, made a huge difference. Much faster and smoother.

Could NOT decide where I wanted to ride today. Soooo ended up going to the Orange Creek Restoration Area. I rode there once last year after LindaN and her husband went there. At the time they had just got done disc harrowing some of the trails making them almost un-rideable. Well.... It was a little bit better today but not a lot. Some of the trails that were bad last time were good now. But now they have harrowed different sections. Some of the harrowed areas were rideable because we had a bunch of rain the other day. But just barely rideable, it was slow and tough going. I seriously think today was the hardest 8 miles on a mountain bike that I have ever ridden. I mean Florida doesn't have many hills & NO mountains.... but we got sand.. Lots of sand if your out on a mountain bike. Riding through it is like going up hill the whole way...

Anyway... a bit over 8 miles.. 1hr 28 mins on the bike (slow & some walking). Did I have fun???? YES!!! Do I wanna ride there in all that sand every day NO NO NO!!

Palm tree forest. I've never seen this many palm trees growing in the wild in one place. Was kind fo cool. One of the few spots that the trail was nice to ride on.

More palm trees. Even riding on this grass if felt like the tires were being sucked into the ground.

This is a shot from the observation tower. The main road back to the tower is REAL NICE to ride on.

The weather was gorgeous today so headed north to the top end of the Withlacoochee Trail. Then turned around and headed down to Floral City. Ran into a group from Orlando taking a break there. They appeared to be 50-something but I'm not good at guessing a person's age. Ate my Clif bar and headed north toward Hernando. They caught up with me just south of Inverness and asked if I wanted to join them. Rode with them for a few miles and then they stopped for a break. I kept going but they caught me again about a mile south of Hernando. I told them I would be turning off the trail at Hernando so wished them a safe ride. It was nice to have someone to ride with even though we didn't do much talking. I did 50.8 miles and got lots of vitamin D.

Had to do a quick ride today -- my wife wanted to visit her aunt in the nursing home near Crystal River. Did 53 miles.

Good weather although a storm looked like it was ready to dump, but never did. 25 miles, about half of it on dirt roads riding my newest Walmart bike, Schwinn Sidewinder. Handled the ride very well but I got to get used to those 26 x 2 1/4 inch monster tires. So much more energy compared to the 700x28 of my other Wally World bike.

Welcome to the thread... I am not a Walmart bike hater!! I started riding as an adult about 9 years ago now because of a Walmart bike. (well ok got it at K-Mart, got the second and 3rd one at Walmart though). Cost me $79 bucks and an hour in the store deciding if I would really ride it, if i got it. I was pretty heavy at the time it lasted about 8 months, riding 5 times a week (not long rides wasn't in shape enough for that). The second and 3rd bikes I got at Walmart cost me over $100 each, one for me one for the nephew. He rode the bike maybe 4 times total. Those 2 bikes lasted me about 18 months and 2000 miles. Sooooo yep..... Wally bikes got me riding.

Like others have said on here... The best bike there is .... is the one you ride!!

Jay.......

Ok boys and girls; you missed a fun ride today. I met lookinUp and another rider, Dave. It was my first ride on the Nature Coast Trail. Very nice.
She was on her brand new Trek Madone 6.5 WSD (I think). Anyway, it is a beautiful bike.
We rode from Trenton to the bridge over the Suwannee River to Old Town then to Fanning Springs and finally back to the Trenton Trailhead. Did a total of 27.8 miles.

The required pre-ride photos.

Great pics Ron!! You guys sure picked the right day to ride.

Yep I rode today... I had plans to ride 8 miles on the paved trail and about 4 or 5 in the woods. My plans got all messed up about 7 miles from the van. I had just turned into Etoniah State Forest and got a flat. As it was I was cutting it kind of close to make it back to the van before sunset. Walked 1/4 mile back to the main road State Road 100. On the walk back saw somebody stealth camping just off the forest trail. Maybe they missed the Florida Trail cut off and had to camp here.. Not sure. Got back to the road fixed the flat (thorn in the tire.). Decided to ride the road back to where I was parked. About 2 miles down the road I had to stop and add more air to the tire..... Dunno... maybe I have another hole in the tube. Made it back to the van at about 6:30ish just as the sun was setting.... Nothing like the threat of darkness to make you ride faster.. .... HAD FUN!!!

Sounds like you had an eventful day.

Glad the rain is finally gone. I rode over to the Hernando trailhead (Withlacoochee Trail) with the intention of riding to the south end but at the last minute decided to head north. Most days I like riding to the north end. It's sunnier and warmer (no overhanging trees). I like the sun and warmth. Refilled my bottle at the top end and then headed south. Rode to about the 10/36 marker (10 miles from the south, 36 miles from the north) and stopped for a Clif bar. My butt was starting to hurt so decided I'd better head home. Stopped again in Floral City for water and a short rest. Got home and my whole body hurts so no ride tomorrow. Did a total of 76.3 miles.
I was hungry when I got home (can't imagine why ) so we went to Five Guys burgers. When we got home from the burger outing I had to have some dessert. A small bowl of Stonyfield After Dark Chocolate hit the spot. Yum!!

Ron you still testing a new saddle?

Yep I rode today.... Didn't have time to fix the flat on the mountain bike so tightened a couple of spokes on the front wheel of the road bike and decided to ride that. The bike came with those bladed flat spokes when I got it. I snapped a few over time on the back wheel and this past summer had Dana at the local bike shop re-spoke the back wheel with the regular round spokes. Tired of buying the flat spoke at 3x the price of regular ones. The regular ones seem to be stronger and don't bind on each other as much. Sooo when I get a chance I think I'm going to have the front wheel re-spoked.

Anyway got out for a ride today the the PLB trail (paved part) I had intentions of riding the whole thing for the first time since they got done with paving the new section. Felt kinda bad for the first 10 miles. Could not get comfortable and my hands were buggin me. I go through this all the time when I ride the one bike a LOT and don't ride the other one. Sat down for a rest at about 10 miles into the ride. Got a call for work so had to cut the ride a bit short (I like money... ok I don't like it but I need it ). On the way back to the van I was feeling really good, even into a slight headwind. Ended up riding just under 20 miles. AWESOME weather.... Had fun!!!

Just got done fixing the tube on the mountain bike.. yep missed another thorn...

Yes, I'm still testing the new saddle. It felt better yesterday but I think it was because I was wearing my best bibs with a better chamois. Even with those bibs I started doing a lot of standing out of the saddle after 45-50 miles.

Yep... Wednesday.... Decided to go check out Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area. I have been riding through parts of it for years on the G.ville Hawthorne Trail, but never actually went off the trail on the mountain bike. Parked at the horse parking area to the g.ville trail in Hawthorne. The trails/logging roads were in REALLY nice shape considering that they had just got done logging in the area. Usually the trucks tear up the roads bad when that happens... NOT so this time. Rode about 5 miles to the signs in the first 2 pictures. Two signs same entrance. Took a different way back and ended up on the G.ville trail back to the van. Ended up riding 1hr 16mins..... a bit over 13 miles....

It was an AWESOME ride... Really enjoyed it, was feeling good on the bike riding on good trails!!! I wanted to ride more, but had work to get done at home. BUT on the plus side there are a LOT more trails to ride... And another whole area to ride that connects to Lochloosa ... Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve!!! MORE FUN TO BE HAD!!!

My old body was/is still sore in a few spots so I only did 34 miles yesterday. Yesterday was Pi day (3-14) so I stopped at Sandy's bakery in Floral City for a pie-bite.

Today I'm heading up to Dunnellon to Blue Run Bicycles to look at Speedplay pedals. I tried them in 2004/2005 for a few months. I'm trying them again because its getting harder to unclip from my SPL-SL pedals when coming to a stop. Got my fingers crossed.

LOL at the Pi day... Do you get pie every day after 3/14 as long as you keep extending the number of places you carry Pi out to?

I started with clipless pedals on a mountain bike... So I ended up with SPD's on both it and my road bike... Too cheap to buy 2 sets of shoes for different kinds of pedals.. I did buy a new helmet today though.... NO RIDE

No extending pi so there will be more pie days. I just get pie if I ride a bunch of miles and don't have a Clif bar.

I've been riding with clipless pedals since 2000. Started with SPD but switched to Look in 2001. Rode with them until I tried the Speedplay Zero in 2004/5. After 3 months I gave up (went back to Look) because I had a hard time getting clipped in after pulling away from a stop sign. Sometimes it would take 3 or 4 attempts to get clipped in. Switched to SPD-SL in 2010 because of the wider platform and they're easy to get clipped into. Lately I've had a hard time getting unclipped from the SPD-SLs (old age??) so thought I've give Speedplay another try.
I went to Blue Run Bicycles in Dunnellon this morning and got a pair of Speedplay Light Action pedals and cleats. Got them lubed really good with White Lightning and tried clipping in and out while holding onto a chair. Tomorrow is the maiden voyage. Warniing -- there may be some rather scary/bloody pictures in tomorrow's post.

Ok, you can look. No blood, cuts, or scrapes.
I did a quick 13 miles with the Speedplays. I practiced clipping and unclipping while riding down the uncluttered. unbusy roads that take me to the trailhead. The cows and horses got a strange show from me.
I got the hang of clipping in before I got to the busy US41/Norvell Bryant Hwy intersection. That's where I cross to get to the trail. Unclipping is VERY easy compared to the SPD-SLs.
I got some great tips from Grant (the shop owner) and the daughter of our upstairs neighbor. She and her husband used to own San Antonio Cyclery (near Dade City). She rides a Litespeed Vortex (drool).
Anyway, looks like I'll be keeping the Speedplays.

Now if I could only get the muscles in my lower abdomen to stop hurting. They've been sore for 4 days. Maybe I'm overdoing it. Not sure if I'll ride tomorrow. I may rest my tiny, overworked gut muscles another day.

I did a quick 36 miles today. Had to hurry because my daughter (and family) was supposed to call and arrange to meet somewhere. Never happened. Seems her mother (who lives in Chiefland) issued a command that they should all spend the afternoon with her. So I hurried for nothing.

I met a guy on the trail who is down here from Illinois. He was riding his brother's bike and didn't like it. It was a Giant Rapid 1. He said he preferred his Specialized Roubaix. Who wouldn't? Anyway, he looked at my Litespeed and asked who made it. He'd never heard of Litespeed. He's the second person I've met this week who never heard of Litespeed. The other was a customer at Blue Run Bicycles. Is there something in the water that these people are drinking?

I've been down with some kind of virus(??) for the past few days and I'm still down but doing a little better. I managed to do a very slow 26 miles today. It was a real effort to ride 14 mph. My average speed was a pitiful 12.8 mph.

Yep... Rode the mountain bike in Lochloosa Wildlife Management area & Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve. 18.90 miles on the sand, limestone, grass and what was left over after they logged. Great ride... had fun... But was pretty whooped when I got back to the van.. Took me about 2hrs 9mins and some seconds.... Sooo my average was way slower than yours Ron.. That was about my limit for the day...

Pics in other thread...

59 miles today with some friends. My knees are killing me right now because I moved my seat back as far as it would go and I should have left well enough alone. We rode from Altamonte Springs to the north end of Fort Florida Road. Stopped at Panera for a light breakfast on the way up and stopped again on the way back for lunch.
