I don't think I'll go out today. Maybe, I don't know.
Anyway, I did a ride yesterday the Share the Road /Jim Warmowski Memorial Ride.
He was Naval Officer that died in his fiance's arms on the side of the road in 2002.
I rode from the house to the corner to meet up with the boss and a few people from the shop and then out to 220 and 17. From there we rode down to the place of Jim's death for a short rememberance with kind words and taps.

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/45652271

I did better this year than last, didn't plan on going long on my fixie last year. I wsn't too bad untill my turn on the front closing on a little rise towards the end of Decoy, just shy of 17. I might have been able to get back on after the turn north but, I had slowed a little to help someone else that dropped off harder than I did. I was trying to keep the group in sight while giving him a chance to catch back up to me, that never happened.

I caught back up at the gas station at 16 in Green Cove. Last year I turned off at 315 and headed home. This time I made it almost out to 218 in Penny Farms before falling off the back again. The group was headed out to Thunder Rd and I thought for a second that I'd get back on again near the light at 16 and 218 and gave chase for a few minutes before giving up and turning around and heading home.

When I got home and downloaded the ride I realized that I rode a third of the way to Thunder Rd before turning around. In other words, why turn around if I was so close? There was no way that I was going to stay on even if I could have gotten back on.

60 miles, two weeks straight in the saddle, 600 miles
feeling flat the last few days

Ok talked myself into a ride... Decided I would hop on the mountain bike and try for 10 miles. Just wanted to get a short ride in keep the legs loose after my long ride yesterday. Got about 3 miles from the house realized I had forgot a water bottle.... I'm such a dork!! It was after 6pm, cloudy and really not too hot out. Soooo I just rode around awhile, rode up some hills standing up for something to do.. Nice ride 11.53 miles.... I really just noticed that the mountain bike works the quads a lot more than the road bike... even when NOT standing on the hills.

about 25 miles with my neighbor Mark and his 11 year old son - I was impressed, the kid can hang. Got some great shots of the moon as the sun was setting. Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3

I finally did it! Rode to work today, just got off my butt and did it. (actually, wouldn't that be getting on my butt? I don't know)

Anyway, ride to work was 8.25 miles, took me about 40 minutes with fully loaded panniers and lights. Still haven't gotten fenders in the mail yet, but they will be going on soon. I got the Reflex full coverage ones.

So... do I keep posting here, or should I migrate to the "How was the commute" thread?

Hey now..... Just because you got ON your butt and rode to work doesn't mean you have to ditch us..... LOL

When (IF) it ever cools down I'm going to start doing the post office run on my mountain bike again. Right now I just cant handle getting all sweaty for the 6.5 mile post office run & then do it again later for a longer ride. I went so far as to get another bike a few months ago so that I could add the basket on one bike & still have a mountain bike for riding on trails. Ohhh and I had a bit of heal hit after I put the basket on too (mounts like panniers). It's a metal so I just cut the center of the basket where my heal was hitting and bent the 2 bars back a bit.... worked out good.

Congrats FunkyStickman! I haven't put fenders on my bike yet. I tried one set and they don't work under my back rack. It looks like the kind that attach to the seat post are out. Over on the commuting subforum, I've jumped in a few threads but haven't hit the "how was the commute" thread yet. I probably will though at some point.

Gavush, nice moon!

zzOtherlandzz, and if your clothes didn't dry between, it might make double the laundry too. I'm doing twice the laundry I used to, but at least the loads are small.

This morning I rode into work and got the first hint of fall. The humidity was lower and I think it was hovering right around 70 degrees when I left. Lovely. Wore the chucks again today and had no heal strike issues with the panniers. Yep, a jersey, bike shorts, short black socks with white stripes and red low top chucks. Silly!

Gonna try to add in another ride day this week. The rides are just getting easier and easier. And now that the temps are starting to back off, the afternoon heat will be slightly more bearable. So for today, I'll have the regular 18ish miles of riding in.

23.5 miles today
343.2 miles this month
4461 miles this year
144 ride days LY vs. 143 ride days TY
3039 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles)
I am @ 59% of my goal. I need to be @ 66.6% (5000 miles) by the end of August
186 miles ahead of last year at this date

Headed out to do my patriotic duty and vote today, even though the weatherman called for isolated thunder showers 30-40%. Got to the polling location went inside and voted, wrote a nice compliment card for an excellent job that the staff was doing, then went outside and was taking a picture of my bike in front of the vote here sign (photo 1)and got scolded for it. Sure didn't understand that. Weather was still looking pretty good so I took off for Panera bread and some breakfast (photo 2). Stayed to long at Panera and some of that 30-40% started falling on my head. I had a head wind of about 15mph so I ducked into Westmont Park to wait out the rain (photo 3). About an hour and a half later I was able to head for home. (Photo 4) is what the weather map looked like when I walked in the door. I live right in the middle of the dark green.

Ugh. What was he doing on the sidewalk?? Man.

The ride home wasn't too bad. I was expecting the heat to be unbearable, but it wasn't bad at all. The usual impatient people, saw a few guys out riding bikes, actually, but every single one looked like a derelict and was riding on the wrong side of the road. I mean, seriously, who tells these people to do this? I learned about bikes in traffic when I was a little kid.

I did have this one idiot sportbike rider circle the block just so he could rev at me. He was fat, too. LOL You know he was jealous.

I have no idea why he was on the side walk. I always, well except for the most rare of occassions, ride in the road. And I, admittedly, do speed through the school zones on this road , on my bike. People are idiots and ignorant. Read the comments.

Amazing how ignorant people are. I just don't get it. It's only a matter of time before I run into (no pun intended) some yokel who thinks like they do... scary.

Got in another one just under the sunset wire. DANG I was torqued at my boss for keeping us all an hour late - I was hoping to swing by the bike ship and get some lights for the road bike. Oh well. Try again tomorrow. Or today rather. Anyhow, Tuesday's ride was 15 miles in one hour, south and west, so that the return trip would, again, be with the wind.

Wow some of the comments scare the crap out of me. Especially the one made by B_Riz ... Id like to know when in the he!! so many bike riders feel the need to ride on the main road when there is a huge sidewalk right next to them with no one walking on it. Did the guy not read the article he is commenting on... That's exactly why we don't like to ride on the sidewalk, that's why after 2 rides on the bike path along side SR21 I wont ride on most of it anymore. People just DON'T look for traffic on the sidewalk or path, they just pull all the way out to the road or turn from the road without looking.

Anyway... Wish I would have went for a ride today.... Good to see you guys did get out though

Started out of the house at about 5:30pm, got my ride to the pavement about 1/2 mile away.... But didn't start riding until almost 6pm... DOH! 3 phone calls right in a row that NEEDED to talk to me... lol Temp of about 83 NICE, lower humidity NICE, tailwind on the 10 miles out NICE, headwind on the 10 miles back.. NOT NICE.... The wind felt good while sitting on the "resting rock" for sure though. I sprained my right thumb yesterday while lifting some grocery bags. If hurts down by the palm of my hand, you know kind of the part that you rest on the bars while riding. It was more of an annoying pain that made me have to move around on the bars more than normal. But now that I'm back and typing this..... its throbbing nicely .... ahhhhhh

Anyway despite my thumb buggin me I had a really nice ride..... 20.12 miles...

Good to hear everybody getting some miles in... it makes me happy to know I'm in good company! Wish I could kick back with some of you guys/girls and throw back a couple of root beers.

I wasn't sure how commuting would affect me, it's only been 2 days in. Riding in the afternoon heat has been okay so far, and it isn't as bad as I expected. The bike is starting to protest... it is developing creaks and groans, which I need to take care of before they develop into something broken.

Maybe I'll do my commute route this Saturday, and just take pics so you guys can get an idea of what it's like down here. There's some neat old homes I ride by, but a couple of rough neighborhoods too.

For the record, I've lost 20 pounds since I started riding regularly again (about 2 months) and watching my diet. I thought I was only 20 pounds overweight, but now that I've lost 20, I realize that my gut weighed a lot more than 20 pounds. I could easily lose another 15, so I guess I'll keep going until I get to the point where I don't want to lose any more weight.

I know, that's gotta be frustrating to some, but I'm one of those "all or nothing" kind of guys. If I'm going on a diet, either I'm going to blow it off, or knock it out of the park. I honestly can't believe how much I've lost, but it's working. The wife certainly isn't complaining!

13.5 miles today
356.7 miles this month
4474 miles this year
144 ride days LY vs. 144 ride days TY
3025 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles)
I am @ 59% of my goal. I need to be @ 66.6% (5000 miles) by the end of August
121 miles ahead of last year at this date

This month is not going my way at all . Today I had hoped to get about 30 so I left the house about 7:45 am. I road to my Dr. Office to set up a follow up appointment and get my monthly B12 shot. While putting my gloves and helmet on I noticed a rather large crack in the side wall of my rear rim. Now this is not good, but it was only the start of my troubles. I headed on over to the local bike shop to see what could be worked out. I got their about 8:45 and they didn’t open until 10 am so I headed on to the local Panera (not my regular one) for some breakfast and coffee. I sat at Panera until 10 then road back to the LBS. I went ahead and replaced both rims, tubes and tires and rim tape (Credit card took a big hit). They finished up about 12:00 so I headed out to try and get a few miles in. Stepped over the bike put my foot in the clip went to shove off and the crank just spun clear around. Back inside for a new bottom bracket and another hit on the credit card. Finally got home about 1:30. Five and a half hours and 13.5 miles today. These short rides are just blowing my averages away. August 2009 was a 750 mile month for me last year and I will be hard pressed to get 500 miles this August. Please send all sympathy cards to my Orlando address.

Sorry I haven't been posting much here since I started commuting this week... there's not much to report, other than stupid drivers, so I just thought I'd spare you the agony. I'm down to 185 pounds on the scale, that's 25 pounds lost so far.

My commute route is totally different from my normal cruise. I pass by the municipal airport, an old train station, a plantation house, an abandoned meth lab, through a school zone, and across a bridge... then I go down a road through some cane fields and end up at the factory I work at. Here's what we build there: sugar cane harvesters. If any of you guys have John Deere or Cameco sugar harvesters, this is the factory they came from.

You should commute to work on one of those.... No worries about bad drivers then...

25.3 miles today
381.9 miles this month
4499 miles this year
145 ride days LY vs. 145 ride days TY
3000 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles)
I am @ 59% of my goal. I need to be @ 66.6% (5000 miles) by the end of August
146 miles ahead of last year at this date

Finally a ride longer than 20 miles. I will need to average about 700 miles per month Sept/December to it my goal. Gonna be tough, weather needs to be good and need to stay healthy. Stay tuned for late breaking news.

Decided to go ride the G.ville H.thorne trail today. Got the the trail head in H.thorne at about 5:15pm or so. Light drizzle when I started the ride, so didn't take the camera. NATURALLY a few miles down the trial I wished that I had the camera. A woman coming the other way says "there are a bunch of wild pigs down there on your left"... Sure enough off the side of the trail there must have been 30 or 35 wild pigs/boar.. Couple more miles down the trail and the sky just opened up..... it poured for about 3 miles. The rain was coming almost straight down. There were quite a few riders out on the trail getting wet with me. On the way back from the G.ville end I saw a group of 3 deer then a bit later 3 more. Ended up riding 30.12 miles... I felt great at the end of the ride...... well except for my partially sprained thumb... that was bugging me most of the ride... hmmmm actually feels pretty good now as i'm typing this... Temp was 77deg when I got back to the house...
