Yea Joe did it in like 13.40

Shprung 07-14-07 02:36 PM

WOW. 13:40 - We need to get him to post a leason here, or even to make a DVD about climbing
He definetly knows something you (well, we) don't. 13:40 - Crazy! especially after reading your last report where I had to take a shower after reading it because I start sweeting and my HR jump high too...

ovoleg 07-14-07 02:38 PM

He only weighs 155lbs, and he has been riding a long time, better bike, and very experienced rider. He can probably drop me on the flats too if he really tried.

How much do you weigh Shai :p

Shprung 07-14-07 02:41 PM

167lb ; then the bike (with all crap on it) about 26lb

I hope you guys are having a good rest of your ride, and hopefully I'll keep working on the engine so I can keep up better soon.

Been there....how did you get back to the valley? back up Topanga?
How are knees?

VanceMac 07-14-07 03:56 PM

Ovo - the guy I was talking to from SBW, was Lee ("Go Fast" on here). Was very nice to see him and his group out on PCH. We regrouped at Leo Carillo campground, and I even waited out on PCH to wave you guys down, but that is several miles past Latigo. Sounds like you had a good ride, nonetheless.

Brian - we waited at the bottom of Topanga for you, but then Ovo said to head on after calling you. You had to get back early anyway, but wish we could have ridden a bit more together. It was a pretty fast ride today -- ratio of fast riders today was way higher than usual.

We had a very spirited jaunt up PCH, and then a heck of a workout up Mulholland (since Steve was setting the pace).

Unfortunately, coming down Mulholland, before you get to Sierra Creek, one of our riders (Eric Z.) had a terrible high-speed fall. I don't want to get into too many details before we know his condition, but it was the worst I have seen. Police, Fire Dept, and Ambulance all responded promptly, considering the remote location. And I'll give a shout out to Mark, who was already attending to the Eric when I arrived and probably kept him from going into shock.

Second week in a row I've seen a brutal, downhill crash. Please be careful on those descents! There are just too many variables that can go wrong.

thomson 07-14-07 04:04 PM

Argh, sorry for Eric, hoping for a speedy recovery

Was this coming down Rock Store?

+1, Mark did all the right stuff.

awiner 07-14-07 04:34 PM

wow... Sorry to hear about Eric. I hope his injuries are not too serious.

merider1 07-14-07 05:11 PM

:( I hope that rider is going to be okay. Do you know the cause of the crash yet?

No, he probably just lost control on the tight turn (rock or something). But he could have been cut off by a motorcycle -- he wasn't quite lucid enough to say, and the next person back was around the bend.

merider1 07-14-07 05:34 PM

I always think on descents to slow it down. No offense to this rider as I suspect he is quite skilled at descending (which, when all is said and done, doesn't mean squat if you hit a rock), but this is yet again a reminder of the danger of this sport. :(

big john 07-14-07 05:38 PM

I'm really hoping Randy sends out some good news tonight. I'll post here if he does. M.E., I don't know if you remember Eric, but he was on the last Baldy ride with us, off the front with Keith, Adam, and those fast guys.

ovoleg 07-14-07 05:46 PM

Sorry to hear the news. I really like Eric hes a great guy. When I crashed and I thought I was alright, the group started moving on Baldy and then I realized the cleat was messed up so everyone kept going but didnt realize it. Eric turned around to check up on me. I won't forget that. The guy is awesome and I hope he recovers soon.

Send me a pm, I want to know his status.

M.E., theses are the only two photos I have of Eric. Maybe Shai has some better ones.

In the first pic you can really tell its him, second one I'm not too sure. He's always smiling too, great guy.

I do remember. Oh, that's just awful. :( I know it doesn't matter one iota if I've ever met the man, but having met him (yes, I remember him, very nice and great smile), makes it worse. Please keep us posted on his condition.

I just went back over Topanga. Not too steep so I could take it easy. The knee is a little sore, but I'm working on getting it properly diagnosed.

Vance, yeah I told Oleg you didn't have to wait since I had to head back anyway. The beach weather was nice, though, I almost wanted to keep going down PCH for that reason.

ME, great so I can hang back with you if you're on a ride. The wife says you can look since you respect the no touching rule (I can look too :) ) lol

edit: Oh yeah, and the new (to me) bike is much more stable on the descents. I have to get used to the slightly slower reaction, but it feels much smoother and sure in the cornering.

Since I don't see you online right now, John, I'll go ahead and post Randy's e-mail update:

Most of you were on today's ride when Eric crashed pretty badly coming down
the Rock Store climb. He was air lifted to UCLA.

I just heard from his wife Mimi. He's going to spend the night at UCLA. If I
got this right; He can move his left eye back and forth but he's having
trouble opening it. He's cut on his chin was stitched. He took a lot of
IV's. He has a small compression fracture in his back but it didn't sound
too serious. He's now aware of what happened to some extent.
If you saw his condition, I would say this is very good news. But his face is pretty battered. Here's to hoping that the healing process exceeds expectations.

This is probably the best news. He was out of it for awhile (he was unconscious when I got to him and it didn't look good--but he became more and more alert even as we waited for the paramedics).

Hope his wife is alright. She was solid when we talked on the phone. I would be a mess if it was my spouse.

Easy up to PCH, Joe and I went to the top of Topanga at a brisk pace but nothing too fast. Came down and made a right on PCH. Then we stopped at some place and headed out again. Riding on PCH in a tight group is kinda iffy because so many potholes and all sorts of random crap on the road. Joe was riding next to me when he hit a pothole and got a flat. I stopped and tried to wave down Vance but he was talking to some dude so I'm sure he didn't notice.

We fix the flat in about 8-10mins(CO2 ftw). THen we were thinking either Las Flores or try to catch the group. Figuring that we could AT LEAST catch big john and the girls, we decide to follow them.

They said they were going up Latigo...So thats where we went. I dont think I've climbed Latigo from PCH(or at least I dont remember it). Well...that was one hell of a long, some parts steep, and HOT ride with WAY TOO MANY false tops. I sprinted like 3 times to what I thought was the top. After the little descent in the middle I got annoyed and just rode at my own pace. Obviously Joe dropped me after that and I told him to go ahead and see if he can catch the group. He said he went nearly all out and could not see anyone at the top or at the bottom of the descent. He waited for me at least 5mins.

I was burned out. I went too fast up that hill at the beginning...not knowing how long it really was.

Rode back through Kannan-->Augora-->Mureau-->Ventura

Ended with 78miles.

I'm in pain.

Time for a burrito.

Well this explains why we never saw you guys again. Just as well, it was hard enough going up Mulholland...didn't need you making it any harder ;) :D (of course, being at the back, I wasn't anywhere near Vance/Steve/Bill et. al. so I suppose you wouldn't have made it any harder :) )

BTW, my Garmin says we did 63.6 miles with 4978 feet elevation gain. I don't know the area at all, so how did you leave PCH before us and still do 15 miles more?

.

Lucky thing you were there, Mark. And good to know he is in good hands now. I'm a fan of UCLA Medical.

ovoleg 07-14-07 07:25 PM

Thanks for taking care of him Mark.
