He was toward the back of a paceline, hit an obstacle, wheel jumped up, and when it came down, turned sharply and threw him on to his head and shoulder.

thomson 02-17-08 09:27 PM

Ouch!! I hope the best for Keith!!

:( Sorry to hear. I hope she recovers sooner and wish her the best.

Ouch, another one down, get well soon Caren.

merider1 02-17-08 10:10 PM

It seems like a curse. I'm bummed to hear about both Caren and Keith. Not a good start to 2008.

And another... from Big John:

"On a sad note, Stan told me yesterday that long time SFVBC member Arnie Zane crashed at the Palm Springs century and got a punctured lung. This has to stop. John"

Yes, Stan told me that yesterday too. :( I hereby forbid anymore crashes/accidents. Seriously, no matter how experienced a rider is, stuff happens, so be careful out there.

Anyone do the CSUN ride today?

urbanknight 02-18-08 10:05 PM

Nope, I took the day off to spend time with the wife. Anybody planning on doing the SFVBC ride to Balcom for the ToC Saturday?

awiner 02-18-08 10:09 PM

50% chance of rain for Saturday at this time :(

I may be watching Stage 6 for the first time on TV....

I've heard a lot of people say they were in for that. But I think I'm gonna bail this year... and do either Montrose or the GMR ride.

Yes, Vance, we missed you although you would have either had a slow ride (thank you guys!) or we'd have seem you at the break and then, *poof* you'd have been gone. The Two Topangas ride turned into: ride from Calabasas to Simi via Westlake/Erbes/Wood Ranch/Los Angeles, then back to CSUN. About 70 miles. Mark on the white Orca and I visited Keith at the store, then carried on via Devonshire/Woodley to return to our homes. Keith is hanging in there. Clavicle chipped off a piece nearest the shoulder. When the neck pain and general swelling goes down, he may seek an MRI if it still feels out of whack. Hopefully it will be a straightforward healing & we'll see him soon.

Six weeks off and he'll still drop me! :)

After I left Mark and got to the Peet's Coffee near my house, I saw that I had 82 miles... so I went around the valley - again - and ended up with 105 miles today. So, I think I'll post on the C-O-M site with two centuries in Feb. Is there an award for slowest average? ;) Today ended up @ 15.4

You're making me feel lazy for my piddly 32 miles! Although we did manage to pack a fair amount of climbing into those miles.

Lazy, LOL

One of the riders today estimated 5000 elevation gain. I'm hoping Mark our treasurer replies to my email with his Garmin info.

Hey, I got a question for you folks: I'm thinking I'd like to ride out from the Westside to visit family in the Northridge area one of these days.

What's the best route if I'm coming over Sepulveda and want to end up right near Tampa and Devonshire?

"Best" = least amount of insane traffic...

I don't mind busy streets as long as I've got some room to maneuver. Suggestions?

head down Sepulveda then once you reach Burbank make a left. You'll see Balboa Park, hang a right at Woodley then all the way down to Devonshire and then make a left, then you'll get to Tampa.

You are going to see traffic pretty much anywhere. I like Ventura but ppl on these forums cry about Ventura and say its dangerous, but must of them are pansies

king88uy7 02-19-08 11:04 PM

You might want to stay on Sepulveda past Burbank till the Orange Line, then take that to Woodley.

yes do what king88uy7 says if you want to get there by midnight...cause those lights at orange line are 3 hrs long

dont bother

just take burbank, dont be a n00b

DScott 02-20-08 01:29 AM

Thanks, guys... I grew up in the Valley, so am pretty familiar with the area. I just haven't ridden there for a number of years. The Orange Line is new to me, and I'd read here that it was pretty slow going with all the stoplights. It would have been great if it had been a throughway with little need for bikes to stop.

Ovo, what about that left up onto Burbank from Sepulveda? It's a bit of a wall there, and I wonder if the freeway onramp being on the right there presents a problem?

How about Sepulveda > Valley Vista (better than Ventura?) > Hayvenhurst > Burbank> Woodman?

Or is there some other way to get to Woodman north?

I did see a designated "bike route" heading West off of Sepulveda right near Valley Circle. Where does that lead?
