Want some photos? no problems, visit the map-route page for ride #408.

And something more directly to BF:
roadfix, you better start working even harder on 2008 ;I'm truly impressed with your double century (highland!) back in Jun. But look what I saw today

Aw, Shai... that's just my parts-bin special single-speed (not fixed). Nothing 'core about that. Especially since I ended up straying off the route before the hills!

VanceMac 12-08-07 05:53 PM

Shai, did you stop by the big Boulevard Cycles grand opening today? It was a madhouse earlier... and I have to stop by again later this afternoon.

urbanknight 12-08-07 05:53 PM

He says that now, but I've seen him climb Potrero Rd on that "parts bin special"

Nice pics. Thanks!

Yes I did. It was packed, and I will be there again tomorrow because I wasn't in the mood of waiting and then not getting anything (because I need a car to curry stuff...)
They didn't have the Sidi 5.5, they have the 5.0 and the $420 Ergo 2 - maybe PM me, or let the world know about the deal you told me about for the 5.5. Of course I need to add to it a new & nice pedals...

Hey Shai,

The last couple pair of Sidi shoes I've purchased have been from

http://www.totalcycling.com/index.ph...oad/index.html

They're in Ireland and while the dollar has been doing poorly recently I just checked and the 5.0's were $180 and the 5.5's are $207- they come pretty quick and the shipping is about what the tax would be here. It's also a good place to purchase Michelin Tires if you use them.

VanceMac 12-09-07 04:37 PM

Hey Shai... what's new? ;)

ovoleg 12-09-07 07:11 PM

Shai got a new bike? That giant was a pice of ****

It certainly might be the dirtiest bike on the ride... but... how could you tell from so far back?

Yeah, Ovo, and on a ride of 8 miles or less, how can you possibly have time to check out what others are riding. Besides, Shai could ride a Target $39.95 special and still beat almost all of us in time and distance.

Well... thank you!!

No need to get this exited about my purchase; it is not a new bike.
Got the Sidi 5 Black, and the pedals that looks like small circles (On the receite is call it "Zero S/S Pedal System". I don't know much about it, Vance is the one that selected it for me; it is like $180 before the discount). Last, I got a new chain.
The guy in the store told me that my bike are too dirtie and show me a bit how to clean some importent areas.

Ha.

Shprung 12-09-07 10:24 PM

He talked about corrosion and "I can't open this screw because it all stuck.. did you ever clean this?"
I said, just try harder. He explain to me why I change chain every 2.5-3k: is the dirt between the chain and the gears/rings...
He asked me to come again for more cleaning/fixing because my strearing/front make weird noise when I turn it from side to side.
The bike have now 10k on it, so I think its need a good cleaning and some parts replacement.
(On my motorcycle 10k was a special service too)

VanceMac 12-09-07 10:32 PM

Shai, I hope you listened carefully and took notes, because that was the grimiest bike I have ever seen! :D

Seriously, your headset sounded like it was about to give out... and when your drive train is that dirty, it not only makes it harder to pedal, but it dramatically decreases the lifespan of your chain, cassette, and chainring.

I noticed a very strange sound and feeling when just pedaling along with the turning wheel and not pedaling hard. I can't quite describe the sound and feel, but it was definitely some sort of friction. The only thing I could come up with at the time was perhaps the chain is designed to fit in one direction only. I then put it back to normal the following day and the noise/sensation went away. So are these chains designed to mount only one way? if so, it's the first time I've heard about that. I have the Shimano HG50 chain, which goes with the HG50 8 speed cogset.

I've never heard of chain being designed for one-way orientation. More likely: you're chain has just worn--that happens. At some point soon, you'll want to take it into a shop to have them check to make sure it's not too worn. Chains are somewhat cheap. Chains & new cogsets aren't.

vertical bob 12-11-07 07:43 PM

I always reverse my chain when I've had it off. It's supposed to lenghten its life and the cassette's. It's also much easier to put together reversed because the pin that you pushed out to break it appart will face you that way and it's easier to get the chaintool on to the pin. For years I would take the chain off, boil it to clean it, and soak it in hot wax to lube. They sell tins of pink chain wax for $7-$10, but I made my own from canning wax with a tablespoon of ATF to add lube and make it pink. I think that costs about 50 cents. I don't do that anymore with the dry lubes like White Lightning out there , they work good.

urbanknight 12-11-07 09:02 PM

^ So you don't have any problems reusing the pins? I never did either, but that was when I was 120 lb and didn't know better.

Hey! I finally saw the episode of NUMBERS that some of you SFVBCers were in. You had about 30 seconds of tv time! Bravo! You're famous!

Exactly! That's what I did. Then I did it again to return it to it's previous in/out orientation. The chain/bike has maybe 800 miles on it, so I don't think it's a wear issue. I've never encountered that issue before, so I don't know what to make of it. Next cleaning I'm going to reverse it again to see what happens. Thanks for the cleaning insights.

You may have some wear depending on (no offense) how much you weigh. I know you said you do Tuna Canyon and Topanga a lot. I'm about 235-240 and I generally only get 2k miles on my chain before it's toast as I do a lot of high torque climbing. You might have stretched it more than you think.

Anyone going to CSUN tomorrow? (I'm assuming that's a "no" for you, Shai.)
