Thoughts on triple cranks...Compact+ ?!?!?!
I'm of a mind to most likely slap a triple on my bike...26/36/48
What's the general opinion on these brands/models?:
The Shimano Deore:

I understand that the Surly LHT comes with an Andel crankset, so this is a top contender, my bike is the just released Straggler:

Sugino was mentioned to me, but I have no idea how to spec it or where to go about getting one:

Are you square taper ? THere's a ton of them in Classic and Vintage that are excellent choices.

It's a Surly Enduro bottom bracket, and I haven't been able to locate a spec'.

I have a couple of bikes that are pushing 25 years old that are still using the Shimano Deore LX triples, one is friction shift bar ends the other has brifters.

Are you getting a straggler complete? It looks like the Straggler is specc'ed with an external bottom bracket with the complete. The Shimano Deore cranks that you posted will play nicely with the stock BB with appropriate spacers, a new front derailer, and a new front shifter(im betting they didn't stock it with a triple front shifter either. The Andel cranks are good, not great. you would also need a square taper BB for the Andels. Sugino makes a really great product and you can get them various places online, but the cranks you would likely be looking at are also going to need a square taper BB.
Another option for lowering your gearing a bit to consider that would be cheaper is to replace the cassette and rear derailer with mtn components like a deore derailer and an 11-36 cassette.

The Deore crank comes in two flavors, 44-32-22 and 48-36-26. I bought the 48-36-26 model and the 22-tooth individual chainring from the other model. After I swapped the small rings, I had 48-36-22 with gives me a an 18" granny gear with a 34-tooth cluster in the rear.
When I bought them in 2010 I paid $121 for the crank and $8 for the 22-tooth small ring. I don't think you can buy a better crank for $130.
The outboard bearings stiffen the bottom end nicely and the whole thing comes apart with a single 5mm allen wrench. Perfect for touring applications.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like I can get a "standard," triple by Shimano (130 BCD), and if I'd like I can get a matched set of pinned and ramped chainrings in the sizes I want for outer & middle (48 & 36), and slap on whatever 24t or 26t I'd like (74mm BCD) inner ring, and those typically aren't ramped and pinned because they're the small ring?

Thanks for that, I'm trying to get it to range from 20"-110"~ gear inches... I can accomplish that with an 11-34 rear and a 26-36-48 front...if I understand everything correctly... I know I use the 20" on my current ride, and the 48/11 will be more than adequate...I may go 46 for the big ring.

You cannot go smaller than a 38 tooth middle ring on 130mm bcd. I am running an Ultegra tripple with a stainless 24 inner and a Sugino 38-48. Shifting up to the 38 is a bit slower compared to a properly mated Shimano set up, but not at all important for touring. I am using Tiagra brifters, and it takes a little more than a single sweep of the shift lever.

I couldnt cope with your gear choice though as my knees suffer enough with my 17.3 gear inches at the low end when I'm laden.
I'd really like one inch lower but that would put my IGH out of warranty spec.
I think my high gear is in the very low 90's but never utilise it.
I cant push it on the flat and prefer to coast down hills.
Again - your Fuji looks like a work of art.

You can't go wrong with Shimano, IMHO. However, I have a Sugino as well as Dura-Ace triple cranks on two of my bikes. The Sugino (50-34-24) is definitely geared better for carrying loads, and that one is on my touring bike. The DA crank is geared a little too high for loaded touring (52-39-30) but works great on my sport touring bike that I use for commuting, recreational riding and supported tours.

It means that when I shift into my granny gear, I need to simultaneously shift my rear derailleur up two gears as to not spin out. But the extended range is BEAUTIFUL. I highly recommend it.

Keep in mind that bottom bracket width, spindle length, and crankset all have to match up. You can't always just swap in/out one piece. And moving from double to triple also needs a new front derailer and shifter --and possibly a new rear derailer (longer cage maybe). So it's not just slapping on an extra chainring.

You are comparing 4 and 5 arm cranks with different bolt circle diameters. If you might want a lower granny gear some day, think about how low you might want to go. Some cranks will only allow a 24t (or bigger), but some other cranks will allow chainrings smaller than 24t.
