I'm lazy as hell when it comes to cooking but I never eat non-nutritious garbage either (white rice, fries, 10% "fruit" drinks, hot dogs etc.). My main sources of carbs/protein are potatoes and lentils. Both are microwavable (Homer woohoo!) and versatile. I also eat alot of dried fruit (cheap and portable). Protein/fat sources are nuts, chicken, sardines and eggs. Hope that gave some ideas.

processed food and sugar is junk food.
Read the label. Frosted mini-wheats are whole wheat for fiber and vitamins with a modicum of sugar for quick energy. They are really good for you. You on Atkins? You seem to be down on carbs, even the "good" carbs. Study it--you'll be pleasantly surprised! Actually we're both right. A good breakfast would probably be minis and eggs. Then throw in some fruit and you're rockin in the AM.

more fiber = more filling. examine how much fiber you are usually eating and how it corelates to how hungry you are later. I was amazed because I could eat endlessly, but when I ate more whole vegtables and whole grains with lots of fiber in them I ate less and stayed full longer.

Oh, I love the smoothy iowarose is talking about. I add a little bit of juice to it and a bannana cause the plain nonfat yogurt I get can be kind of tart.

No actually I eat a lot of cereal and whole wheat pasta.
When I hear "frosted" I picture refined white sugar, something I don't need I don't think.
I am trying to stay away from junk food, white bread, white rice, etc.
Sugar is calorie dense, nutritionally low.
Something like a banana is not calorie dense, and is unprocessed.
Just my philosophy, once in awhile I';ll go crazy and drink a red bull or a Sunkist pop, I'm not perfect LOL

Sounds similar to how I eat. Sometimes I get a craving for sweets that will not stop. Usually a ligltly sweetened cereal like mini-wheats (Multi-grain Cheerios are another) will tame that craving, and it's still pretty good for me. Of course, the same is true of a banana. So, as usual, we're both right!

I like smart start for a lightly swetened cereal. I've found if you "blend" cereals you can make bland but healthy cereal more palatable.

Also for me fresh blueberries go farther for pleasing flavor than sprinkling sugar...MMMMM

Its true they are not so bad. But I much prefer Nabisco Shredded Wheat - very little if anything is added, I think its just wheat and some preservative in the packaging - then you can add fruit & sugar to ones liking.

When training, I eat Entenmann's Multi-Grain Cereal Bars (You can buy 8 bars for about $2.00, zero trans fats!!!) instead of blowing $$$ on Powerbars that taste like crap...

pick up some Miso from an oriental foods mart...you mix it with water, noil, and add what you want...we like a little shoyu, tofu, carrots, garlic slices, broccoli, cabbage and sprouts..add noodles too if you want..very versatile, easy and inexpensive.

another is pasta with extra virgin olive oil, good parm, carlic, crushed red pepper, broccoli or diced tomatoes if you want..sub cauliflower for broccoli or have both...quick, easy, and cheap (except the good parm which CAN go a long way)
