headaches / migraines
had one of the worst bouts with a headache which lasted from 2pm Monday to 1:30am Wednesday which included a sleepless night Monday night (except for 30minutes). it's amazing to me how something so incredibly painful can come of out seemingly nowhere and go away in similar fashion. lots of potential triggers and treatments that I'm so confused. yesterday someone told me to see a chiropractor even though I wasn't having any body alignment type issues. what works for one doesn't necessarily mean it will work for another. not to mention the fun researching cures/treatments while suffering with one. today I feel like a new man, like it never happened. so weird.

Yikes- 36 hours !!
You have seen MD
tried sumatriptan(sic) pill shot nose spray?
It worked for my wife
there are newer treatments-many treatments
No reason chiropractic "stuff" would work-
it is usually thought to be from bld vessels dilating "too much"
who knows-standard medical treatments work for most folks-not cheap, but 36 hrs of pain!

If you've had them before, I'm sure you have tried at least some of the various possible remedies. If this was your first:
an ice pack often helps. Lying down in a sit-up position along with the ice may also ease the pain a tad. For some people, certain foods will trigger these headaches. If you get them again, keep a food diary to see if there is a pattern. For me, Sorbitol, an artificial sweetener, triggered my headaches. Once I avoided it (e.g., no more Breath Saver mints for me) the headaches stopped almost completely.

one of the last things I tried early this morning was a bag of frozen peas so this product might be in my future, we have various other ice pack devices for the back and other body parts, so why not this cranial cap!

Did you have an aura? Did you throw up? I used to get migraines when I was a kid (got my last when I was 14), and I always had an aura and I always threw up. They always lasted about a day, but I was out of commission the whole time. I never figured out any patterns to why/when I'd get them, except they seemed to occur most when I had gym first period in school.

re: Did you have an aura?
ummm ... yeah, kinda like Alzheimer stuff and ppl were correcting me and stuff, it was wicked annoying. I was seriously messed up. can't believe I drove 15+ highway miles and through a whole day of work. had the lights off and blinds & door closed all day & worked as little as possible, but glad I went in - our busy season now
re: Did you throw up?
nope
I took B6 & B12 and did some nite walking/limping, that, plus the frozen peas for over an hour were the last things I tried

I get migraines from time to time. Sometimes I go months without one, then sometimes I'll get 3 a week. I get aura, nausea, confused, and my left side goes numb.
I've learned what works best for me, but everyone's different. I'm most likely to get one if I have low blood sugar (miss a meal), am stressed, not sleeping well, and/or have been drinking caffeine. Also, if I don't exercise for a few weeks, it's more likely.
I can usually avoid the headache part if I immediately eat a snack, go to a quiet dark room, and take a nap. A noise maker helps me to fall asleep and keeps me from thinking; You have to turn off your brain as much as possible.
I've gotten them while riding and it's pretty dangerous. I can't see where I'm going and I get confused easily. I head straight for home or call.

I get migraines that come out of no where every couple weeks it seems. I feel them coming on usually a couple hours in advance. Once this little feeling that a headache is on its way, food of any kind does not seem to help. Neither does denial that a headache is coming. Sleep gets rid of it usually in a couple hours or so, but when I get up, I'm just totally spent, but feel great. Just real tired. Haven't been able to figure this one out either, as this has been going on for years. Never really thought to talk to my Doctor about it. I usually end up taking 3 advils in addition to sleeping. I wouldn't mind the migraine so much if I could just figure out something to take instead of advil. That stuff is poison.

my research brought me to add these 2 things to my cure trials: fish oil & calcium
my personal testing keeps B6 & B12 in the mix
but with my last bought, after taking B6 & B12 and walking a little around our complex the ice seemed to help considerably. hard to tell for sure, I mean, "scientific method" should be change 1 thing at a time, but when we are desperate it's not easy to try just 1 thing at a time

My wife used to get migraines. It turned out to be a combination of low blood sugar and allergies. Now she eats after exercising, especially in allergenic surroundings. Hasn't had one in many years. She used to take Cafergot for them. That's probably ancient history. Whatever it is, prevention is the thing. Once you've got one, you're screwed.

I get them. Not as severe in recent years. Started a little over 20yrs ago. There were periods where I was immobilized. I've been to doctors & done a lot of research. Nothing I have tried has worked for me. I try to live healthy & live with them. There are a lot of studies. Recently I heard they found a gene that is passed on. I don't wish them on anyone.

3 years ago, I got a stomach ulcer, I'm hard headed and thought it would go away, I waited 3 months to see the Doctor. Meanwhile I worried and stressed myself so much that it could be cancer etc...that I developed daily bad headaches and head pains. just random pains shooting across my skull. I could barley work and play with my kid it was so bad. My eyes would also hurt and dry out. My Doc fixed the ulcer with meds and checked my blood and concluded I just had chronic tension headaches that a lot of people develop in their 30's. Chronic tension headaches usually happen 26 days a month. Imagine living like that.
On top of that I was overweight with high blood pressure at 30 years old. He recommended to stop worrying and stressing and do a dash diet (low salt). I slowly started taking his advice and I noticed after 1 year the headaches were becoming less severe. Doc said that was a good sign it wasn't a brain tumor or something more serious. (i didnt want to pay for cat scans when I first went to the Doc) Even during the 2nd year I would get random severe pains again, but just about 5 times a month. I'm now in the 3rd year from when I first got the headaches and life is much better. I took up cycling in March and i've lost 37 pounds and almost at a recommended weight. The headaches are now 1-2 times a month. My blood pressure is still running a bit high (imo thats causing some of the headaches) I may have to get meds to lower my blood pressure cause I've about done all I can do.
my blood pressure was 133/85 this morning. It's very tricky when it comes to headaches. So many things it could be. Good Luck!

Jesse, I thought that one of the bennys to being on the DASH diet was to NOT have to be on BP meds? I had looked into the same diet-even started it and used it for a while, but eventually, got back to my old ways. I'm 200 lbs and 5"11", 48 years old. Been on BP meds since I was 20. My weight has come down 20 lbs in the last several years, and I expect that it will continue to as I consider my mortality more and more. I'm not a doctor, although I've been in the medical field for 30 years, I wouldn't be on any BP meds until your diastolic hit 90.

Migraines have always been a problem for my Mum. She stopped eating cheese and chocolate years ago, and only has the fully skimmed milk. She still gets them though.
i got my first one in senior school, early teens. I have on average 2-3 a year. Mostly seem to be when I am stressed, also late spring/early summer when there is a low sun seems to be a common time for them and seems to be related. I refuse to change my diet unless it can be proved it will stop the migraines. I eat plenty of dairy and pretty much have at least one bar of chocolate every day. (I'm 6ft and weigh 78kg)
My biggest problem is when they do come there is no warning. The first I know about it is my vision starts to narrow. I lose my peripheral vision and my fingers start to tingle. I literally have to just sit quietly and close my eyes. Normally if I have a neurofen and do this fir half hour or so I can carry on what I was doing, but I have a pretty nasty headache for the rest of the day. Interestingly though, normally the next day I feel great! Better than usual even.

hmmm, interesting, 1st time I heard dairy as a possible trigger. sounds like yours are severe. glad they are so rare. I got one last night before bed and had it all night, but I slept because it wasn't severe. it's starting to go away now. I haven't a clue what triggered this one.

My Mum and Nan both get migraines (so yep to it probably being genetic) both were told to clear chocolate and cheese from their diet. Both did it and have still got migraines, but less frequent, less severe. Maybe its an old theory. My Doctor has never told me to and He'd get told to f off!!
