My LBS, College Cyclery in Reno, just checked for me and told me they can obtain a 2009 Surly Big Dummy for me for $1900 retail + Shipping and Tax. Apparently Surly is having a sale on remaining 2009 Big Dummys and I was told that the $1900 price is with the shop still making their normal profit margin. I have ordered the 20" in Military Green.

This is about a 1/3 reduction in price over the introductory price listed when the bike was announced IIRC and about $550 less than the MSRP price of $2450 listed on the Surly web site when I checked it today.

The $1900 is about the same as the current price listed by Jenson bikes on their web site and substantially lower than other web listed prices I have found.

I downloaded the 2010 Surly catalog and the only difference I found listed is the replacement of the Surly front hub on the 2009 with a Shimano XT hub on the 2010 complete bike. Not even a change in paint colors.

BTW I have no connection with Surly or QBP othe than as a customer.

I expect to. I just wish Surly offered a Rohloff hub version and were discounting it as much as the current 2009 models.

My LBS told me today that QBP charged them only $15 for shipping on the Big Dummy to Reno, NV. I have no idea if they are having a deal on shipping or this is usual but it sounds dirt cheap compared to what I expected.

Interesting. Somebody's eating a little profit on something, 'cause there's no way that ANY carrier would move that hunk for 15 clams.

The bike arrived and is now in use. It is built to the 2010 parts list and has the Shimano XT front hub so I guess that I will have to call it a 2010 Big Dummy. I have been surprised with how agile and responsive such a long wheelbase bike can feel.

IMO this makes the $1900 I paid an even better deal. Per a page I printed out back about April 2009 the MSRP then was $2700 and the Surly web site still shows a MSRP of $2450 last time I checked it. If anyone is considering a BD then it looks to me like now is probably a good time to buy.

I've been trying to resist for a while now but I'm afraid a "cheap" Big Dummy frame is just too good to pass up. I've spent the past couple days reading old build threads, trying to decided on what size to get, and fantasizing about going all out Rohloff style...

I'm now wondering if it might be worth buying the complete for $1000 more however and selling off the parts I don't need/want. Need to price out the components I had in mind, but I think they'd be more than $1000. Stuff adds up quickly as you know. Of course if I do decide to "buy once, cry once" and go with a Rohloff the complete won't gain me anything. I know there's been threads about this, time for more searching!

Not sure if you saw this yesterday, but it looks like Shimano is going to sell a new 11-speed Alfine model sometime this year. So.....set up the Dummy now with a traditional derailleur and if that fancypants new Alfine looks good to you later this year...........it's less than half the price of a Rohloff.

I did see that and it sounds nice. I plan to tour with this bike though so the bullet proof reputation and bigger range of the Rohloff is what interests me. That said I still haven't decided what I'm doing, too many choices!

is that I've had the same drive train on my dummy for almost 2 years now
and it's got a lot of miles on it.

that being said
I've wanted a Rohloff
but its costs a lot
and that equals a whole lot of traditional drivetrains

i cant say that the typical drivetrain is all that bad

what would i like the Rohloff for?
possibly for shifting while climbing a steep gradient with a big load, thats about it.

The ability to shift while standing still or climbing is a definite plus. I also like the fact that everything is sealed up and I don't have to worry about cleaning or adjusting derailleurs.

I think I'm going to go with the frame only. If I don't get a Rohloff I'd prefer an SRAM drivetrain and v-brakes over the Shimano and discs of the complete.

From what I've read an 18" sounds like the right size for me at 5'10".

I think the 18" would work great for you, too, boc. I'm 5'8" and you can see my monster stem stack, so....

I am 5' 11" and went with the 20" frame Big Dummy based primarily on top tube length compared to my other bikes with flat bars. I probably could have also fit an 18" pretty well but I was influenced by the fact that the worst fitting bike I ever had was a too small frame bike sold to me by an LBS when I first started riding again. IMO a case of their selling the size they had in stock rather than fitting it to me but I was too ignorant at the time to know what I needed.

I feel that happened to me with my current bike turned Xtracycle. Which is part of why I'm looking at the Big Dummy as I'm tired of putting money into it to get it to feel right. It's a bit reversed though in that it's always felt too big.

It's interesting that you're going for the 20". I've read a lot of comments about how the top tube is extra long and people end up with a smaller size than they thought.

If after more riding I decide it is too stretched out I can always install a shorter stem. The 20" came with a 120mm stem so a 90mm or 100mm would give about the same reach as the 18" Surly built bike has.

I also have an older Univega Via De Oro hybrid 17.5" bike and had to install a much longer than original stem to give me the reach I wanted. The stem on it is about 140mm. I prefer a fairly well stretched out riding position rather than a sit up and beg position. Others have different preferences for bike fit of course.

An 18" frame set in black for me and a 16" frame set in green for the woman who contracted my highly contagious Big Dummy Fever(tm). The colors are irrelevant as both with receive custom paint jobs of awesomeness. Now comes the daunting yet fun task of deciding on the rest of the parts. We've never built bikes from the frame up before but are looking forward to it!

I just received my 18" military green Big Dummy frame from Bike Stop for $638 delivered. I am putting my XT drive train from my Kona Blast which includes XT hyd disc brakes also.
