pcad thought there were others in the crash but I was the only rider around on the floor once I opened my eyes. There were already some volunteers standing over me so I could have been out for a bit. So far my head feels ok. Body is sore pretty much everywhere.

From analysis of my ruined kit and the damage to the bike and helmet I think it's likely something caused me to very quickly go over the bars. perhaps someone whacked my elbow or hit the back of the handlebars, causing an immediate highside. If I had hit the curb I would have gone down on my right side but the bike damage is on the left and I got up from a spot in the traffic lane.

powermeter file says the last speed was 28

Sorry to hear about your crash Grumpy--I hate racing there for that very reason.

I don't buy it that the master's races are any safer than anything else--especially in Prospect, it seems like crashes are the rule rather than the exception.

Hope you heal up soon!

I've been racing in Prospect since 1994 or so, and I've seen very few crashes in the 35+. But that particular fast descent leading into that single lane is a crash waiting to happen in some respects. I told Grumpy that I tend to go through it on the jogger's lane side so that if I get squeezed I have an escape route into that lane on my left. I was racing there as a Cat 4 15 years ago. It was all bunched together, the peloton screaming towards the bottleneck @ 30mph. I see a crash unfolding on my right in that spot, the riders falling like dominos. I was locked into my spot in the pack, couldn't move. The flow of the crash went behind me and missed my rear wheel by a bike length.

Bad luck more than anything else in my view. I can count the 35+ crashes I've seen in Prospect on one hand. The 4's and 5's turn the place into a crash fest however, those races often have pile-ups.

Grumpy's crash reverberated to my side of the peloton, and I was on the opposite side of the road, I had to swerve to avoid riders swerving in front of me. That crash could have been a pretty big pile-up, and I saw some pretty good bike handling and measured reactions (which you might not get in a 4/5 race) that seemed to have prevented that.

No matter how you slice it, if you race your bike this is what can happen, as you all know. Very happy Grumpy wasn't pulverized, he really was pretty fortunate to walk away with bruises and scratches on him and his gear. But he was riding good this AM, so that kind of sucked.

glad to hear you got some miles in RTC. Sorry to hear about the crash Grumpy. You might want to have someone do a concussion check on you, even if it's not a doctor. It's a pretty simple test to administer.

If you were knocked out there's a good chance you have a concussion. It's kinda by definition. If you start having other symptoms I'd head to an ER. Head trauma is nothing to mess around with.

And I like my Joe Blow Sport. It seems to last quite a while.

I did 4:20 or so hours today. My legs hurt. My longest ride in a long while. Time to eat and watch football.

My front tire has a bulge. I friggin hate the new krylion carbons. Second set in a row that's had issues. Going to try to get them warrantied. Their useful life is not over, and this is a defect.

Ordered a set of speediums from pbk for 19 dollars for the set. I'm way over budget for the week because of the bike shiet I bought, but it should last a while. I bought 4 commuter tires, 2 road tires, and 10 tubes. I'm switching both my SS and my commuter to 28's. The SS is probably going to see less use as the roads become worse. I don't want to ride cross tires on the road anymore and besides they rub the fenders. Now I need to swap the bars and do a few more things on the commuter to get it working again. Hopefully I'll have the chance to work on it the week the tires and stuff get in. Saweeet!

I wear full-finger gloves, so it couldn't have come off while riding. I don't ever take it off, so I think I would have had it on when I left home but honestly I don't remember. I noticed when I was at the coffee shop after the ride, so it could have come off when I took my gloves off there. I crawled around looking for it on the floor but didn't see it. That must have been quite a sight

Surprised to hear it. I've gone almost 8k miles on the new ones - including 28 races this year - and haven't had issues. Anything on the road that you think might have caused it?

I almost shortened a few of my fingers today.

Reached down for my rear bottle today, which had the Gatorade and was on the seattube, and for some reason I felt the seattube and then went even farther back. My fingers brushed the tire at about 25 mph (descending). That could've gotten ugly pretty quickly. I'm not sure what happens when you put your fingers into your spokes at 25 mph, but I'm assuming it involves a lot of blood.

if there's a reason to get round spokes instead of bladed cx-rays...

yeah, these are rounded. I'm not sure that helps a whole lot though. I'm guessing it might just break my finger when it hits the chainstay, instead of cutting it off like a bladed spoke might.

I stopped wearing mine after I lost weight. It would just slip off. After catching it a couple times I put it in a drawer... you can't resize titanium.

About 6 months later my wife's nice vintage ring broke. So we're back to looking like we're shacking up.

The big danger isn't the spokes, its getting your hand sucked in between the tire and seat tube.
If you jam your hand in there you end up on your head. I saw a guy do that once. It was pretty awful.

But touching the tire isn't that big a deal. Don't you do it when you brush glass off your tire?

Woohoo!
It wasn't brushing the tire that I was worried about, it was the proximity to the spokes that I worried about.
