Bicycle Repair Man !!!
My friend called me and asked if I wanted an old Rocky Mountain that seemed fine save for the lack of a saddle and seatpost... swapped the tyres and made a few changes to the chainrings and the rear cassette so that the XT short cage derailleur would play nice. Am pretty sure I have an XT long cage from this period so I can restore the crank to it's 24/36/48 if I decided I want lower gears on a bike that seems ideally suited for some very fast XC riding.
The Stratos is a little rocket... it is probably from '88 - '89 by virtue of the threaded 1.125 stem and cantis and was 26 pounds on the shop scale.
I hear that Frank the Welder was giving lessons at Rocky Mountain when this bike was built and the welds do look exceptional.

Lucky man! Always coveted the Stratos, alum alloy bikes were starting to win races.
Everything RM made in those heady days was class, from Fusion to Blizzard.

Rocky Mountain had better geometry and the Stratos handles like it is on rails, climbs like a goat on speed, is stupidly quick off the line... and very fast.
I might just have to keep this bike around for a little while... had initially thought I would service it and then find it a new home but it can keep the Blizzard company for a while.
Doing some further checking and the Stratos appears to be a '91 and should have a DX short cage instead of the XT short cage... I happened to buy a mint one of these at a gear swap some time back so will install that to unify the parts group.

With all the XT I think I'll be getting a good deal..trading the bike below + $50.

We get a lot of Skykomish bikes in here and I've liked them all. Love the Tange sticker on the stem!
I dunno if I could part with that British steel, though. I think it's time to make a cash deal on the Skykomish and n+1!

The thing with the other bike is I found a nicer Fuji mtb (lugged frame and fork) with bullmoose bars.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
The Stratos (17.5) is smaller than my Blizzard which is a 20 inch frame but the (virtual) top tube and reach are nearly identical... at first glance I thought this was too small a bike but it is only a few mm shorter up top than the Blizzard which has higher placed bars and a shorter stem.
The Stratos has a virtual top tube of 54cm and is rocking a 130mm stem which puts me in my happy place... did a little research and the bike is a '91 which got me to thinking. I have been collecting a good deal of XTR 8 speed parts from this period and the STIs and cantis from this periods really don't get much better, XTR cranks are a thing of beauty, and I have a DX wheelset with an 8 speed block and a long cage DX rear to handle a wider range.

M900 was intro'd in 1992. I have the Shimano products catalog featuring it. Probably the prettiest component group ever to grace a bicycle, in my opinion.

I picked up a RockHopper today, seems to be about a 17" frame or so, fits better than the Marin and Fisher MTB's that have passed through my hands and are now elsewhere. Just dumb luck at the thrift shop at the right time at lunch. Just needs tires and a little lube. 3x7 gearing and grip shifters seem to be working okay.
Any guesses on what model year it might be? Just checked bikepedia and will guess it is a 1995 model. Frame measures about 17"-18" ctc to where the toptube intersects the seattube.

Picked up this '87ish Specialized RockHopper Comp bike last Sunday from Goodwill. I cleaned and tuned it up and will be listing it on CL this Saturday.

When did Specialized first offer the Rockhopper? Bikepedia shows them only going back to '92. I guess I'll have to try and check component date codes on the one I got recently. I'm going to take a lap on it this weekend to see how well it fits. Put some Wildgrippers dual use tires on it last night.

cobrabyte found an 86 early last year, and according to another BF member that is the first year they were built? Honestly I think Bikedpedia starts recording bikes at about 1992?,,,,BD

A little better pic from this morning with the now flat rear tire. Looks like I'll be patching/replacing a tube.

I was guessing the age of the RockHopper by dating the components. Of course they could have been replacements.

Who is up on late 80's or early 90's Schwinns?? Ran across one at a pawn shop today. Has mostly Exage Mountain, Weinmann concave front wheel. Was blue and chrome, but all paint and decals are stripped, leaving a solid chrome frame and fork? There's a little blue remnant in the weld on the fork crown. Chainstay U brake equipped, if it helps? It looks like something I need to pick up, when I get my first paycheck that is.
I happened to drop by the old auto parts store I worked for, to get a window motor/regulator for a friends Chevy truck, and they acted like I could pretty much start right away, as soon as I put in an application.,,,,BD
edit: Looks like it may be an 88 Sierra. Still cool though, especially in full chrome no decals. Drop a set of CrMo bullmoose bars on it, and try to find an original back wheel. I have some better components to drop on it, and it's full 4130.
