Remember that I asked that fellow with the finger-light $325 machine if it had C-Record? Here's his response, and I quote verbatim:

WHAT ????

Too bad he doesn't have a brain strong enough to respond to a simple question.

Schwinn Mechanics Manual. $210.94. 1969 Release. No photos. Or anything other than the bare minimum description.

I posted that same 1939 Schwinn ad here a while back. He's not giving up.

Somebody just paid $105 for a Stronglight bottom bracket tool:

I thought I paid too much when I bought my vintage Brooks for $32.

Somebody tell him its just a record, nothing special. "real" team bikes dont have plastic stem shifters.

nlerner 07-22-06 03:25 PM

Speaking of overpriced Raleighs, how about a 5-speed Sprite at the bargain starting bid of $299 and a BIN price of $399?

nlerner 07-23-06 10:22 PM

Now the price on this bronze green lady's Raleigh Sports isn't bad, particularly if one can pick up locally and save shipping costs, but the description is remarkable. Here's my favorite "sentence":

"YOU CAN STILL RIDE THIS BIKE TO ALL OF THE PARTS ON THIS IS IN WORKING ORDER HAVE WENT THREW IT AND PUT NEW BEARIES ALL THREW IT."

Gotta get me some of those bearies for my bikes. Sounds kind of cuddlely.

nlerner 07-24-06 09:33 PM

What can I say except that in my day job I'm an English teacher. This description struck me as particularly interesting, especially the frame materials of this way overpriced Raleigh Sports: "Balanced steel tubing, Double Butterlet Frame, 20-30 high tensible steel frame construction."

My doctor recommends I use butterlet on my morning toast; I'm watching my cholesterol.

this guy must be high on something. $600au for a used shimano 600 groupset? You'd have a hard time moving NOS dura-ace at that price...If someone actually buys these things it might be time to start listing all my lay-arounds.

Question about this thread: Is it kosher to post a seller's numbskull reply to a question about a bike?

I swear that identical Fiore was for sale on the Pittsburgh Craig's List. I guess there could be more than one.

Okay. Here's the original ad:
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/184672205.html

red white blue Fuso Lux 30th year ann. Dave Moultin 55cm
all campy with campy rims sew ups 750. obo

Here's my email question:
I saw your ad in Craigslist about the Dave Moulten Fuso Lux. I have a couple of questions:

When you say 55cm is that the top tube or seat tube (and is that c-c or c-t)?
Is the rear spacing 126 or 130 mm?
What Campy group are the components?

Thanks very much,

And here's the numbskull reply:

55 cm is centimeters its how builders measure the frame first get fitted and know what size frame fits your body
all campy c record cromed by NASA Ames reserch center
you can call [phone number deleted]

Hey everybody! "CM" stands for centimeters! It's a metric unit of measurement! I did not know that, did you?

I think your abbreviations of center-to-center and center-to-top confused him and he wanted to make sure you weren't thinking center-to-middle. ;)

I think I'll buy a full blown race bike with the latest ultra-lite parts and then have them triple-chromed. Then I should have the frame painted in nine layers of glitter paint. Yeah ... Kewl! Heavy, but kewl!

The cottered cranks are kind of a giveaway, too.

Here's a hoot...Rolf Vector front wheel:

Hell, I can eat a can of $1.50 beans and do the same thing without having to buy his $50 wheel.

Numbskull LBS pricing of the week:

NOS Super Record brake levers with NOS (but not so "fresh"-looking) hoods - $180
Used Campy Victory brake levers with terrible white hoods - $120
NOS ITM handlebar & stem with full-length stitched leather bar wraps - $200
NOS, generic, sloping-crown, chrome Tange fork - $75
Shopworn NOS C-Record brake levers - $120
Ugly, used SR stem - $10
Shimano cassette cogs $10/ea
NOS Campagnolo Victory or Triomphe cranksets, no box - $150
More stuff I can't remember.

Takes some cajones to quote these prices, eh? Probably why he still has these parts kicking around.

And no, I will not get these parts for anyone, both because of forum policy, and also as I don't want to give this guy any buisness at his prices.

All the numbers match -- it's like a freakin' concours Corvette! What? Oh yeah -- there is only one number -- and Schwinn's apparently a little vague on what day they used that one on. :p The serial number and the frame look to be the only correct thing on the bike (and I wouldn't be too sure of that) ...
