Your Catch of the Day / Saved from the Dump!

I already posted another thread about this, but thought it fit in here too. Found this in the alley behind my house a couple days ago along with a bunch of rusty steel rims and a couple crappy dept store road bike frames.

Not sure if I want to go to the trouble to rebuild it or just flip it on craigslist. The paint is in pretty rough shape in a few spots and I don't have the parts lying around. On the other hand, it looks like it fits me and could be a good project if I can find the parts cheaply.

I have a road bike frame that looks similar, the way it's put together. It was made in Germany in the early 70's, and is in great condition. I rebuilt it, frame up, but left it as a 1x7 with friction shifters. I must say, even as a late model and steel frame, it rides excellent.

Grabbed this from Craigslist today. A 1986 Univega Gran Rally. It has the full 600 group including pedals, headset and stem. It even still has the original Univega toe straps. It is missing the rear wheel and the owner said he had taken it to a bike shop to get a spoke replaced and never got it back (not sure what that was about). Not a bad grab for $50.

That's a killer score for $50, congrats!

A phone call to the shop brought me three free bikes, a dept store magna, a Raleigh Record, and a 3 speed Robin Hood, all already passed thru my hands to someone else, but here's a photo of the Robin Hood head badge which I thought was cool.
The bikes were all in rather poor overall shape, so they went to another reseller, who fixes the low end stuff.

Like I needed a tandem, but this Burley Duet was just too good of a deal. Of course, it needs a full rehab: bearings, grease, cables, housings, tires, a handful of rusty fasteners, saddles, bar tape, etc.
I am guessing this one is 1990+/-, based on Suntour 7 speed indexed drivetrain.

Thanks wrk. This bike has hardly been ridden and kept inside it's whole life. It is cleaning up like brand new. I was thinking of flipping it, but I really think I need this in my stable. Would maybe consider trading it for a nice older tandem though.

Yard sale junker
I found this at a yard sale. It was in such bad shape I couldn't make out the brand. I almost scrapped it for parts, but decided to save it (that's my hobby). The lady told me it was retired from a bike rental shop in Sunriver, Oregon. That's all I know. I don't know what I'll do with it, since it's a woman's bike, but I REALLY like how it rides! A fresh paint job, and new almost everything, and it's good for a few hundred more miles.

heads up, that's almost certainly going to be a French threaded BB. Velo Orange has a solution for about $50 I think if you have nothing to start with. I'm guessing the original was a cottered crank.

Can It Be???
Unclear C/L listing, indifferent seller overwhelmed by his volume of flippable and unflippable bikes. Tells me that if I don't buy it, he'll donate it anyway because he "just wants it gone".
Here's the listing photo

Can you see it hiding behind the Motobecane mixte.
Yes! A 1981 Centurion Pro Tour 15! Missing only its saddle. It's a 61cm, too big for me, but worth cleaning up and parting out. The price...$85.

I offered $75 while trying to maintain an aloof attitude (while inside squiriming with sheer delight). We "split the difference", which meant $85. It came with absolutely beautiful Shimano 1st gen Deore XT RD-M700 and FD-M700 stag head derailleurs! I've transported the Jim Blackburn rear rack to my Fuji S-10S already. Not sure what to do with the Jim Blackburn constructeur/porter rack on the front.
The neat thing about this frame is the centerpull brake studs (Dia Compes mounted directly). They're alleged to have less flex and better stopping power this way. There's a little adapter plate for each with a return spring mount, like with V-brakes.
The frame is Champion #2 (Tange #2) with SunTour dropouts. Chromed throughout, but exposed only at the headtube lugs, wrap around seatstays, and dropouts. The paint also has pinstriping. It's pretty. I'll try to post pictures once I've fully cleaned and polished the frame.
Phil
