A neighbor friend gave this to me yesterday because he's had it for years and never rode it. He needed to clear out the garage and knew that I was a bike guy and I figured I could put it to good use. It needs a complete overhaul but overall in physically good shape!

It's a Raleigh Technium 460, possibly a 1986 model but not sure. Components might be all original except for the saddle. It came with a white Specialized Alias 143 saddle, which is nice, but I will probably swap it out with something more period correct.

Nice!

Saved this from the dump this week past. I was not keen on it at first because it's a little small for me but after cleaning it up it started to grow on me.

I picked up this early '90s Novara Randonee recently with the intention of fixing it up for my wife but it was too big for her so I am selling it. It was a mess when I got it. It was 'fixed up' by someone that had no clue what they were doing. The front derailleur was mounted about an inch and a half too high. One shifter was not working and the other had the cable jammed in the shifter. They had replaced the 700c wheels with 27" wheels. They had wrapped the bars with the back side of the bar tape facing up. The person I bought it from said it shifted well. I thought to my self that that was not possible.

I replaced the 27" wheels with a set of 700c wheels I had that matched what came on the bike originally. I also replaced the inappropriate crankset with a crankset I had. They had the wrong size seatpost too which I replaced. I put on the rear rack and bigger tires. I gave it a complete overhaul and it turned out nicely.

Nicely done, always had a soft spot for the Randonee

Some really nice saves going on. RJ, I usually get the bike with the seat post that was too big.

Original SR Signature series. I wonder if it means something else in Japanese? Probably not.

I like to scavenge stuff from the dump, everything from an early seventies Carlton Professional to knights in shining (well not too shiny) armor to fire wood...

Mid '80s vintage Voyaguer brand insulated trunk bag, handle bar bag, front pannier set, rear pannier set, Blackburn front rack, and a Performance brand bike camping tent. All unused, all the bags are still in plastic.

Found this Garlatti in rough shape at the local thrift store. Could use some help ID' ing the year. (Not pictured) Universal brake hoods and calipers,Steel cotter cranks and seat post. Appears to be crome? under the scratches in the piant.

A friend (sort of) found this smashed Holdsworth Record at the dump, brought it home and sold it to me for twenty bucks. The frame needs a good buffing but the component group arrives at a fortuitous time...

The frame set and components...

The harvest...

The Record transmission will, likely, replace the Gran Sport one on my Legnano...

The handlebar and stem will, likely, be fitted to my Freddie Grub that I saved from the dump...

The Grubb...

I can always find a use for little used vintage head set and bottom bracket...
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...16a7901616.jpg

And, today I get to look at a drop dead almost mint Sekine SHT270 in absolutely perfect condition. Original right down to the Belt saddle.

Picked this up about an hour ago off my local CL, been wanting one for several years but they rarely come up around here and the only one prior that was my size was just a frame and fork with brakes. The paint was rough, the drive side seat stay had separated from the frame where it joined the top tube and he wanted as much for it as I paid for this one complete! Didn't get much info from the seller, a grumpy old guy in his 70's that probably didn't say 6 words to me after I met up with him to look it over but I did get a decent deal. I suspect he was selling it for someone else or had picked it up at a sale as he knew very little about it. 1985 Schwinn Voyageur, 100% original, needs a little TLC, a good detailing and new tires. Now I have to put some of the herd up for adoption to make room and appease the better half. Wish it was a Voyageur SP but I'm pretty happy with it anyway.

Prowler 07-21-18 05:52 AM

Literally saved from the dump

A customer visited the shop recently bringing his old Topeak pump. "This thing doesn't work, its a piece of crap". He bought a new one and left the old one. The guy who handled the sale brought the 'piece of crap' down to me. "You can have this. You like fixing up old stuff." "OK, I'll either fix it or destroy it" - my usual reply. I may not actually fix it but at least I'll understand whats inside and how it works.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1bd4b1ce87.jpg

The problem? Considerable dirt and sand inside. The o-rings would not seal with all that. I took it completely apart. The Topeak pumps in this timeframe were actually serviceable - screwed together vs glued together. I opened up everything and cleaned it all. I removed the o-rings to clean and relube them. Put it all back together and it's OK. I can add air to a tire that is already at 110psi. I've put this under the seat in my car so I have it if I need a pump at at trailhead.

My father taught me how to take things apart. Gave me a knack for figuring out how things do come apart. He said "if someone put it together then it must come apart somehow". I wonder how many folks these days (other than the folks on this forum) know that things actually can be restored, can be taken apart and repaired? I assume many people have neither the time nor the inclination anymore. They abandon and discard so much. Restoration is fun.

A neighbor coerced me into adding another bike to the stable yesterday. "Either you take it, or it goes to the dump!" Oh, well.

I present the bike in question: an early nineties Giant Peloton. Needs a bit of spit and polish. On the plus side: it seems to be totally original and complete. :)

Someone in the next town over from me was giving this away, how could I resist? These are after pictures, I didn't get any before. All it really needed was a better saddle, a good cleanup and tuneup, and bar tape. It has moved on to a new home as a city commuter in Boston, should have a nice long life.

Not sure if it's saved or has just been given a temporary reprieve. It is pretty rough but it was interesting, cheap and has some parts I can use. Early 90's hybrid? Canti brakes, 27 inch wheels and supposedly Tange Cr-Mo.

Pretty wide between the stays, I could swap over the 29 inch wheels and tires from my World Sport and have plenty of room to spare.

nesteel 07-23-18 09:56 PM

Fillet brazed Schwinn steel. It's rough tired, seatpost isn't stuck, not sure on the stem yet. We'll see. Original wheels came with it. Price was right. Chrome is toast, so just a simple powdercoat job is all it'll get, them some period appropriate parts.
