I forgot to say it was a Nishiki Internation haha. The new bikes may be faster, lighter, and be flashier, but the vintage road bikes will always have class. Any idea on how to find out the year?

Yes, T-mar has a great thread on Nishiki serial numbers. Here is the thread, the first post contains the serial key.

My guess is yours is a mid 70's model like mine was. Does yours have a cro-moly frame, or is it hi-ten? Mine had a hi-ten frame unfortunately but still had nice forged drop outs and interesting chrome. The decals seemed to be pretty crappy and the paint didn't seem much better.

A little further examination of the catalog makes this even more interesting. It is definitely a 1977 Grand Prix, they marketed two mixte bikes that year, the Grand Prix and Record Limited which were certainly the same frame. Both were 20-30 tubing, but each with a kickstand plate spec'd on the frame. This has no kickstand plate and the serial # would date it as produced at Worksop in June of 1976. Perhaps they produced some mixte's to be sold as Super Course and decided against marketing a ladies model, and just used the resulting frames with the rest of the Grand Prix production. But there is one thing that is certain--
I officially have too much time on my hands! I'm going to quit thinking about it and enjoy it.

Definitely worth the effort just for the bar-end shifters!

Is that a Raleigh Super Grand Prix ? I got one last week that is the exact match for your Nishiki. Talk about coincidence.

It's funny, I bought a perfectly good Fuji at a yard sale for $10 and traded it for two totally trashed piles of rusted steel... and I think I did okay! Am I crazy, or does anyone agree it was a good trade?
I'd say it's a great trade and a great job of giving some deserving bikes new life

I'd also say that beater poo-joe is a PX-10, based on the Stronglight 93 cranks, hope it's not rusted away.

Thanks! There's also the added benefit of giving an indigent person a perfectly usable mode of transportation, which makes me happy as well.

But yeah, experts agree it's a PX-10; and I'm thinking it's not rusted away... yet!

I'm on a bit of a roll lately. I drove an hour to meet redneckwes today and found a decent mountain bike. Schwinn crosscut, double butted cro-molly frame. Weird suntour accushift components and some nice dark annodized Wolber rims. This one is a keeper, and it only set me back $5.00. I pulled in the driveway minutes ahead of another bike guy, there were 2 bikes and I told them we would split them (of course I took the one I wanted)

Here is a Schwinn Varsity that I picked up off the tree lawn a few weeks ago. Pretty good shape, save for the tires which are barely holding together.

Black 1974 Holiday Cruiser

I picked this little number up at a thrift store for $7.99 yesterday... It needs some tubes and tires but otherwise lookin pretty good. I've hit a brick wall trying to find info on this brand, however. Holiday Sportsman. I don't see a serial number anywhere. It was licensed in Iowa in 1974, and there's a BMA/6 certification sticker, which I've read signifies lower quality than bike's made by companies like Schwinn. Still not too shabby for under $10!

Well, I returned the Cannondale I posted last week to its more original state. I sure wish it fit. Someone had put steel flat bars and twist grip shifters on it.

Fortunately, everything came out of the parts bin.

my proudest moment

wasn't in davis though, he was posting from san jose, so I had to pay him $20 to ship it. I might end up replacing the cassette, its pretty rusty, but it spins smooth and true.

I just bought a matching front wheel for $45 (and this one is new!)

Didn't know that existed!

I basically built nearly the same bike last week. I took a Rusty $10 thrift store 1988 Worldsport (picture of it as found about 10 pages back in the thread) that I had parted right down to the frame and painted it satin black (it was black but the paint was hosed up). I had a 1990 Trek 950 (about 6 pages back) that I had sold the wheels off. I took its Straight bars, Seat, suntour Acushift parts, Cranks and free hub for the schwinn. Took a set of Araya 700 rims with threaded hub put a set of 700x23's on it. I have a set of Shamano brakes but really wish I had the Canti's!

Next I am turning the Trek 950 I stripped down to the frame into 42CM touing bike for my wife with a 7 speed or hopefully 8speed STI's and drop bars.

Looks like a major score at that price! What is the long cage derailleur on it?

Nice it looks a lot like a Cannondale I found about 3 years ago in the trash,I don't know anything about it and it is sitting in storage with a bunch of other road bikes that I need to work on. Mine is way to small for me and must be a 16" frame and check out the bars,I think someone had them installed when they bought it new.
After looking at yours mine is a lot older as it has a double up front and a 5 speed freewheel that is froze in the rear and my brakes aren't the same.I need to drag my road bikes out of storage and go over them and get rid of the ones that don't fit me.

All bikes will be vintage if you keep them long enough! That's why it's important to maintain them in good condition.

A friend found this hammered Gitane and gave it to me. I think it is a Gran Sport from the early 70s. The rear derailleur had one cog with no teeth and the other was split in half, the rear axle was bent, and the tires and tubes were probably original--shredded.

I spent a few hours in the bike project rebuilding the rear wheel and tweaking the new derailleur, $14 for tires and tubes and now I'm ridin'!

There is surface rust is a few places that I am leaving. I live in a very dry climate and it will help deter theft.
