Crap pictures of a cool bike. Hard to see, but the parts look older than 1995. I believe I spy 7400 Dura Ace stuff, single picot brakes...

Masi Nouva Strada Road Bike

This is a bicycler's bike. It's for the person who wants to have a road bike that is something different from all the other bikes it'll pass on the road. A one-of-a-kind, simply elegant and carefully assembled machine, with a vintage vibe.

This bike has a 29" top tube, so it's probably best suited for a person approximately 5'4" to 5'7" tall.

A custom built bike with a racing geometry beautiful Masi frame, and Mavic rims, and Ultegra Campagnolo components. The bike is swift and agile. There is no other bike on the road like this one. It was assembled around 2001 and has only ~2k miles on it.

Is the top tube supposed to be bent?

The glue holding the aluminum frame together is extremely strong on that part of the top tube, I would not worry about it.

Very nice find and my size too. I picked up this Rockhopper Comp a couple years ago from Goodwill for $40. Way too small though.

If it wasn't manufactured like that, it's cause to worry. It points to mistreatment or accident.

Money ($25!) changed hands, and she was mine. It rained on the drive home, but the saddle that was on there was pretty water resistant, so I didn't bother to put the Brooks rain cover on it. It wasn't the original anyway, and it wouldn't be there for long.

Condition-wise, it was better than I had any right to expect. Here are some details:

The top-tube "Specialized" decal was gurred up, probably from a workstand clamp, so I removed it with a heat gun, tweezers, and Goo Gone. I think it looks better this way. I might even be able to live with that.

I'll be posting our first ride later today on "Where Did You Ride Today?"

The bike's a real "sleeper" in that color. Very understated paint job, I love it. And the high flange hubs. But would it have killed them to put a couple of water bottle bosses on those old frames? I never understood that.

Any idea what the bike weighs?

Nice score! My college buddy had one just like that. He was a road racer and got into this new (on the east coast) “mountain biking” thing. I got a GT Tequesta around the same time with the same type of under chainstay brake. Interesting idea but not good for mountain biking as mud and gunk cakes up down there. The caliper also gets pretty beat up. Interesting how that concept revived a couple of decades later on aero road bikes. I’m going to visit my buddy this weekend; I’ll see if he still has it in his garage.

It's getting there. I was going to order a pair of knobbies off Amazon, but even with Prime they wouldn't get here until Wednesday! (Black Friday rush?) So I cancelled that order and went to Walmart instead. Bell knobbies for $15 apiece were the only choice there. Staying with the low-budget theme of the bike, I guess. Those will go on tonight...

Yeah, I see what you mean. Sure, that makes sense.

I love those old indexed thumbshifters, I have seen them go for $75 just by themselves on Ebay. That damned bike looks almost brand new, very few miles. Amazing for its age. Did you ever nail down the exact year it was made?
What was the final verdict on the Biopace system? Did that actually give any kind of leverage advantage? I suppose I could look it up, but people on these forums tend to scoff every time they are mentioned. As for the year, the ad says 1988, and I checked an old catalog scan - it mentions "DiNucci Green" as an option, and the bike in the photo has the under-stay U-brake.

Yup. See above...

Yeah, they sure made a lot of them. The 'Comp' is a bit special though, in my understanding. I had a normal 1999 Rockhopper a couple years ago that I turned into a city/cargo bike with a 1x10 Deore XT setup. Did the cold-set on the rear triangle under adult supervision at my LBH. I re-named it "Curbhopper" and had some fun with it before trading it straight-up for my Ross Aristocrat.

To ask the question is to answer it. You don't see Biopace on any bikes made after the late 80's, early 90's, do you?

Certainly there must be a very good reason for this. I'll let you fill in the blanks, but these two holes in the front of my legs are all that's left of my knees after taking a Biopace-equipped bike for a test ride around the block.

Here is a Rockhopper without any decals. I picked this one up for free a couple years ago. I am not sure whether it was a Comp though. It appears to be about the same year as yours. Notice the location of the rear brake caliper. Again it was too small so I passed it on.

Had a set when I was young - liked them a lot, other then when really spinning. Perfectly fine for casual riding. The reason they're not around is less about utility and more about marketing.

I've seen that one pop up a few times. Looks to be a fair amount of rust on the left chain stay.
