Refurbishing an old Zefal pump
I bought this peg-mount pump because I like its looks and it fits my Falcon commuter's pegs. It's a chrome Zefal. Has a few minor dents in the main tube. The plunger seal washer is intact, but it seems to be shot. It looks like it's leather, but it's much softer, and formed into a cup-like shape. What happens when I pump is that about half the strokes will result in compression, while on the other strokes, the pump fails to "engage" and force any air.

Anyone know if there's a replacement part for these plungers?
Also, what's the technique for getting the hose onto a Presta valve and starting to pump without completely deflating the tire? I don't seem to have the right method!

I have a similar Zefal pump with the same problem. I didn't try soaking the plunger in oil, but I did try regreasing it thoroughly, and it helped only slightly. I think the leather disintegrates over time. Mine had all these loose fibers shedding off of it.
Off topic, but does anyone know where one can purchase that style of 90-degree pump-end?

I've had some similar ones to fit Silcas. Its an old design you can find on ebay sometimes. There are some Campagnolo heads that fit the Zefals too, probably even harder to find but I've gotten a few.

The technique with Presta is to first push the valve a couple times to make sure its working, then get the pump head on without releasing the valve except when pumping!

The one on the pump above is made by AFA, and screws in, where the hose would normally go. It also makes the pump just long enough that it won't fit my pegs. I'd actually be afraid to use it, because the threads seem like they couldn't take the force and manhandling that vigorous pumping would require them to.

Charles Wahl, you could try a washer under the nut on the plunger to slightly flare the leather washer out. I have fixed a pump with the same problem by cutting some plastic down to the right size, but the plunger washer was rubber.

Charles, I have a 70's vintage Zefal pump that also would not pump and needed a new cup seal. I looked up Zefal's web site and there was a place to ask a question. So I told them my problem and soon received an email that asked for a picture of the pump to identify it. I sent the picture, didn't hear anything for a week or two, asked again and he apologized and promptly sent me a new cup seal...no charge. The guy is in France and that's where he sent the part from!

Zefel is still around and they have rebuild parts for them.Your pump is not going to get a full pump with a dent in the tube.
You can fix the dent by getting a steel ball bearing the correct size, greasing it up and driving through the pump to straighten it.You can buy the correct size ball at places like McMaster-Carr.
