i don't think that's true. i think all that's needed is a valid, legal offer and legal acceptance. consideration must only be promised.
Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they aren't written on...

There are exceptions....

Oral Contracts: Do They Carry Any Weight? The answer is yes—as long as you can prove it in court.

A handshake deal is always more binding when there are witnesses to the agreement. If you do go ahead and shake on an oral contract with no one to witness it, you should carry out your half of the bargain ASAP. Because putting your words into immediate action is another way to validate your oral agreement.

If you begin acting on your agreement with the other party acting in compliance, you create additional evidence that a deal was struck. Of course, the only problem with this strategy is that it requires the other party to immediately begin work on their half of the agreement.

Moral? Ethical? Legal?

according to the bulgier pages, the '79 has a 5-speed, the '80 has a 6-speed, and the '81 has bottle bosses. since mine's a 6 and without bottle bosses, i am guessing '80. bulgier shows it came with shifter bosses in '82.

les spécifications sont sujettes à modification sans préavis

Catalog specs were never reliable or accurate.... They were usually produced in the late summer or early fall to be ready for the Xmas buying spree. Also for spring/summer of the following year. So the 1979 catalog was probably put together in 1978 and so on.

Just a starting point and guideline.

Bikes: A few too many

In the end, I fault the seller for not giving the first buyer dibs on the bike.
+1 in my estimation both are at fault seller for not honoring the the agreement and buyer for jumping in.
I am a firm believer in the old saying "do on to others....".
I have been disappointed to hear I am 2nd in line but never said I can be there sooner or "I'LL" pay you more etc. I can understand that some buyers might say that they will be there yada yada yada and never show up so sellers might loose a sale because they have informed other buyers that someone is on the way only to have them not show. This may cause others to wonder why the item did not sell and move on or pass..
Sellers should never say they will hold if they won't and buyers should never swoop.
I sleep good at night.
