Today, I took ninth avenue home instead of the Hudson River Greenway so I could meet a friend for a while before I got home. I saw in the street a d-i-l-d-o that had been run over by vehicles. I elected not to pick it up.

Some probably move into one of the shelters, others just continue to camp out and when it gets cold out I think they spend more time wandering around to keep some warmth going. And as one would expect several don't make it through the winter either because of exposure or violence.

For the last couple of weeks I have been passing a pacifier. It hasn't moved even with the heavy rain. Poor baby.

Something I've never quite figured out. I've lived up here for 18 years, and I've never seen a dead skunk. Parts of skunks, often, and one trundling through a field early one morning, but never a whole dead one. Weird.

prolly won't use the liquid crack stuff...hate the jittery feeling they induce.

Not exactly on topic, but while driving last night during a wicked rainstorm, I saw a blinky flashing away on the side of the flooded road. All I kept thinking was "some cyclist is trying to get through this safely, in the dark, and he/she is probably not even aware that the bike is invisible." I felt like I should stop, pick up the light, and go find the cyclist, but it would have been way too dangerous for me and for the other vehicles around me.

I hope the cyclist made it home OK, and I wonder if that blinkie is still blinking out there on the road, especially after all that flooding. If so, I want to know the brand so I can go out and buy one today.

In just the past two weeks, I've found an iPhone 5s, a combination lock, a bungee cord, and a Stanley box cutter knife.

The iPhone screen wouldn't light up. That's probably because it had been out after a couple of days of rain and there was moisture inside it. Water droplets were visible in the camera. I just handed it in at a nearby Verizon store, since it had a SIM card with Verizon's name on it.

Just since I've moved to Tucson, AZ I've found 2 bike headlights, 1 bike taillight, 1 bike seat, a few hex keys, 10-12 bike glove (one matched set), wrench, screwdriver, and a bike frame bag.

I was using a fanny pack to hold my bike toolkit until I found the frame bike bag. It's manufactured by Kangaroo Baggs and fits beautifully inside the frame.

Finding stuff on my rides is half the fun of going for a ride.

Once in a while, I find myself on the street.

Found a working Ipad mini sitting in the gutter along side the road recently. Went into the person's contacts and called "Mom". She notified her daughter so we could meet at a close-by Panda Express. She showed up with a $20 reward while I was eating my dinner. What I didn't get, that I really wanted, was the story as to how the Ipad ended up on the road in the first place. She was with her husband and judging by body language and facial expressions, things weren't going too well.

A folded $20 bill someone must have dropped out of their pocket. No one was around so....

I see lots of tools but most are probably crap like in the pic above so why bother stopping? The only thing that would cause me to break my rhythm would be a large denomination bank note, thankfully in Australia they are all different colours so a $20 or a $100 stand out

I've found some decent tools, including a Cat3 electrician's screwdriver that costs about $35 new. Besides, I'm not picky. cheap wrenches go into the junk emergency toolboxes.

Having a crappy 12" channel lock wrench is better than not having any channel lock wrench.

The vise grips with the rubber grips are probably nicer than the vise grips I had before.

The pruning shears were NOB (New Out of Box, sprawled in the gutter at the first left turn after Home Despot).

I saw a small spanner once and doubled back but it was an elcheapo. I have more tools than I know what to do with. 4 socket sets as an example and that doesnt include the 3/8 and 1/4 drive ones. I suppose the main reason I don't stop though is I only do 1 decent ride a week and I'm scopelocked on doing it to the best of my ability.

I find that the most commonly used socket sizes, 7/16, 1/2 and 9/16, are the ones I lose most often, and they're also the ones that I find on the road most often (I assume for the same reason). It balances out.

Is that a new type of road kill?

I have found a few cool things on the commute, though one was at low tide in the boat, there is a purple sea star and orange sea anemone. The other was around the island just enjoying the sun and warming it's blood.

A few days ago someone broke a bedroom mirror across the mup. I had to pickup my 55pd Schwinn and carry it over. Its been since cleened.

Most suprising an old manual washing machine. Looks to have been buried and resurfaced.

Last week, on the bridge right by the train station, there was a big piece of a steel leaf spring at the side of the road, right where I ride. It was a piece big enough to potentially cause me serious problems if I couldn't go around it, and when there's a lot of traffic I might not be able to go around it. So I went back and moved it off the road, which I could barely do with one hand, that's how big it was. After doing that, I realized I had left it in the grass that sooner or later would get mowed by the county maintenance department, and they might not see it. So now, every time I go by there in daylight, I'm looking for this piece of leaf spring so I can move it again, and I haven't seen it again. Could someone have taken it? Seems strange....
