No morons at my work place. I occasionally get offers for rides home. One guy keeps telling me about deals on various cars for sale.

There are definitely some that don't realize the body warms itself up when you are working out. Sometimes I have less layers on for my ride than I do sitting at my desk.

I hear it all the time "don't you get cold riding your bike in the winter" - NO, you're working your butt off! I've started asking people if they every cross-country/nordic ski, around here, that gets about 50% of people to understand.

With a short commute, driving on a sub-zero F day is miserable because the car never warms up much for the drive. So I can shiver in my car for 25 minutes or work up a sweat on my bike for about 45 minutes.

You need to chill. You're the one who decided to come on here and talk about a co-worker behind their back, on a public forum. And being a public forum, people are going to comment, which I suspect is the underlying reason for you posting about it in the first place. You're looking for comments from people agreeing with you. But since it's a public forum, don't get mad when people don't agree with you, and call you out on this rather juvenile topic of discussion.

I wasn't going to post, but you've confirmed my initial gut reaction.

I'll keep it simple. I'd rather share office space with your moron coworker than with a smug, sanctimonious jerk.

I wish. I worked in a major teaching hospital for eight years, and they never got used to my commuting habits. It was a high stress setting, and in addition to bike commuting, I'd take the stairs instead of the elevator and go for long walks on my lunch hour, to help shake off some of that stress.

So in some respects, I was the odd one out, but I could have cared less. Work was not a popularity contest for me, and my exercise habits were a coping mechanism for the stress and a way to keep myself fit simultaneously. Many, many times I looked forward to the bike commute home, even if the weather wasn't the greatest, as a way to decompress.

I was simply stating a preference between two character traits based on various points, including the description of the event in your OP, your reference to how the moron is raising the company's health insurance costs, and your response to the suggestion that you might be out of line.

My defensiveness is because I'm not wrong. A lot of people have this weird idea that if they disagree with someone, their opinion suddenly has more value. And that disagreeing with the disagreement makes the original person stubborn and pigheaded. But in real life, I'm right. My co worker is a tool. I know more about the entire situation that anyone else in the thread, making me thread's foremost expert in the subject. (You know, since I'm literally the only person here who knows anyone involved or was a witness to the exchange)

Since I'm that foremost thread expert on the matter, I won't take opinions on how I'm wrong from anyone else.

Gotta agree with you here. When I first read the quote from your co-worker "What, no bike..." I thought that it could be taken in a few ways. Heck, in certain circumstances it might even be a compliment, as in 'you are such a dedicated rider I even expected you to brave this weather.'

But you made it very clear that the guy is a jerk, and was being a jerk. You clearly specified that the comment was meant in a negative and derogatory way.

So yeah, I don't really understand the responses from some people here. You can't really say, "I'm sure it was good-natured, get over it..." when the OP, who was there and actually knows the guys, says that it wasn't. Seems like a lot of people here want to be that good guy (or gal) that always takes the high road, but there's a time and a place for that, and this isn't it.

And since everyone is suggesting their preferred responses, how about this: Next time you drive to work, wait for him at the end of the day by the exit to the parking lot. Then, when you see him, ask him if he wants to have a race to his car. Say it with a smile and a laugh, so you cover your bases with the do-gooders, but he will get the point.

That's kind of ironic. I'm in health care and was in a lot better shape than the staff was at my last job. Everytime someone said anything I told them I knew what not exercising does to you and that usually did the trick - that and having my name on the sign outside.

My condo neighbors have seen me riding and taking the stairs for years. I'm the one who gets complaints about things in the building and whenever someone complains about the elevator and why I haven't done anything about it I usually mention I'm healthy enough to walk instead of needing the elevator. That usually takes the wind out of their sails - especially the ones who find I've walked 1 flight of stairs in less time than it takes them to take the elevator when they go to get their mail after driving home.

Sometimes (not saying it's the case here) the OP of a thread inadvertently reveals that they are not necessarily very good at reading people, so exploring other possibilities of the situation becomes fodder for discussion.

And after all, what fun would Internet discussion be if we always took the OP at face value, and never offered a contrary opinion?
