How was the commute today? Continued.

tell me about it.
I'm about to ride off into the beginnings of this snow storm that's going to turn into a mess. I have to teach an 11 am class but I guarantee they'll cancel at noon and I'll be riding back into 40-50 mph gusting wind and blinding snow. College administrators may be at institutions supposedly founded on scientific reason but when it comes to snow cancellation they don't believe it till they see it.

edit: evening gig got cancelled. I'm home for the night and glad not to ride in the worst of the storm.

43F and pea soup fog. Had two blinkies going and was still pretty nervous about it.

20cm of new snow last night, -4C this morning and -2C this afternoon. Despite the conditions, I had a great ride. Was feeling energetic and happy to be on the bike. Put me in a good mood all day.

Woo and Hoo! My new personal speed record. I did 15.8 mph (that's 25.5 kph if, like me, you want to feel a little faster) AVERAGE on my way home tonight. That's a 0.5 mph faster than my previous best (on Monday).
I'm a happy camper. My sympathies to all the snow riders out there, riding home at 55F is awesome. (Especially with a 10 mph tail wind!)

Tonight, I rushed to get out of work and decided not to wear the legwarmers. Bad idea.

Had a nice fast ride to work this morning with tailwinds much of the way. Rode my Eddy Merckx because my commuter/touring bike is at the shop, so I would have ridden faster even without the wind. Even had pretty good luck at the traffic lights except some dolt in a pickup truck in front of me started reading his mail while waiting for the last light to change. This particular light has a very long cycle, so when he failed to notice it had turned green, I just went around him on the right. That apparently woke him up and he got through the light, but it may have been red by then. If it was, he is in for a surprise because there is a red-light camera at that light.

Compared with yesterday's 20F, today's 22F felt tropical!
Calm wind. No skunks seen.

Packed ice all the way in. I want sloooow and took mostly low-traffic back roads. Slipping and sliding cars are more scary to me than ice.
I have a new folding bike on order, and I think the old onee will become my snow bike. I need to figure out how to get 16" studded tires.

Third day this week on my brand spankin' new Long Haul Trucker. Wee hoo! Sunny, breezy 22 F. The roads were pretty dry. I am running 35mm studded tires. I need to put a mud flap on my front fender to protect the drive train a bit from the salt.

The hardest and longest commute by far. Quite a snowfall last night, "warm" though, low 30s. Streets were mostly slush, but shoulders and most bike lines were blocked by piles of wet snow and there were lots of new potholes, some several feet across, filled with slush and water so I had to ride very carefully. I detoured to avoid two bridges (metal surface) and few streets that were not plowed yet. I had to stop often and wait for a bus to leave the stop or for a truck to turn, roads too messy to risk passing too close and I left earlier in expectation of slow commute so I had the time. Then the Williamsburg Bridge was all ice!. Chunky, uneven ice. Even on my studded tires I found it challenging both to climb and then to descend on that stuff. I had to take a breather on the way up, it was tough. My first experience of this sorts. There was only one other cyclists, he looked more experienced and stronger and he had regular tires with no studs! He stopped a couple of times too, he said he was having fun. I couldn't decide if that ride was fun or if it sucked or both. It took me over 10 minutes to cross the bridge at 3-5mph, normally a 2-3 minute pass. There was a guy snowboarding down the bridge. I wouldn't give up though and I refused to walk!
I salute to all bike commuters who ride in such conditions daily!

A little huffing and puffing today, my 3rd ride in 7 days, after 2 days of gorging.

15F this morning and 22F this afternoon with a 30 mph steady wind that lasted all day. I decided to cut the commute short and take the train both ways. Only did 15 miles today. Hopefully the wind will die down tonight so I can do my normal commute tomorrow.

You Eastern Seaboard commuters are awesome. Insane, but awesome. It was a lovely morning here: high overcast with a little sun peeking through, dry streets, no fog, 49F and calm. Took a 15 mile detour and felt like I could have kept riding all day.

For winter shoes I'd been wearing a pair of really crappy Shimano MT31 that's a size too large, with two pairs of wool socks and wind covers. I recently replaced my toe-only wind covers with full-boot style wind/rain covers. It occurred to me this morning that perhaps they'd be sufficient to allow me to wear my much better M076 shoes that fit correctly and are so much nicer in every way... sure 'nuff, that did the trick. Those shoes are also much easier to get those particular covers on, so the net time savings every time I put them on is greater than the time spent typing all these overly long sentences.
So that change right there made for a nice commute this morning. It's the little things in life.

It took me about 45 minutes to ride home today, as opposed to ~20. Highland Park and Edison do a lousy job salting and plowing their streets.

Three days this week, my best three times ever. I'm so in love with my "new" bike.
Yeah, I know, "It's not the bike". That's cool too.

You "Norsemen" are AWESOME!
I wish you would take some photos and post them here, although I know you have enough challenges at hand.

12F, clear blue sky, and the sun was coming up. Very pretty. I think I saw a loon in Lake Champlain. Hard to tell, given the distance. Looked black with white bits, and it submerged for a while.

We're in the middle of a slow melt, so the roads are sheets of ice in the mornings. The studs are paying off.
I had 3 near right hooks this morning. No, I was never hit, but I had to grab the brakes pretty hard several times.

For the first time in 2010 I clearly saw the sun starting to rise and the darkness start fading away all before I got to work. Well, about a half mile from work, but it was still exiting.
