Lovely ride in at 18 C (65 F). Good early morning temps for me and my tomatoes. The gnats are all over the place, and I prefer them to ice and snow any day of the week. I just need to keep my mouth closed.
buzzman - Yep, I understand the energy flows, and it's a good thing that my legs seem work, even when the rest of me is not doing too well.

Finally a break from the heat & humidity. 60F and sunny this morning. Tailwind. Up too late last night and was slow-ish this morning. Didn't see any cyclists going my way but I saw a two riders going the other way.
A strong thunderstorm blew through last night, downing trees and knocking out power in places. Lots of debris on the MUP. Fat MTB tires = Win.

Slow commute this morning -- 5 minutes longer than yesterday, mainly due to tired legs. I rode 62 miles yesterday, my second mega-commute Wednesday in a row. I rode my usual 20+ mile commute, and then rode 8 miles to park, where I joined a 28-mile ride with my friends. It's a great way to get in some extra training miles, but makes for a very long day and a tough commute the next day.

I picked up a Cateye Stada computer (my first bike computer!!!) I'd ordered through a special sale on REI's website a couple weeks ago and went by to pick it up after work yesterday. 7 mile commute home turned into 16 w/ a fun stop along the way...
Picked up a new 7 speed chain and a couple Powerlink while at REI. Old chain was pretty worn. Installed the computer and replaced the chain (Powerlinks are AWESOME BTW). All excited to try it all out, I went for a quick ride around the neighborhood at 10 PM.
Well, turns out I probably should have gotten a new cassette, too, while I was at REI, b/c my current cassette is pretty badly worn, too, it turns out. Chain skip is awful. In the words of the immortal Sheldon Brown:
Needless to say, I was disappointed b/c I had to slow foot it in this AM since I couldn't pedal as hard as I normally do w/o inducing chain slip. Hope to get a cassette by this evening. Tomorrow I should be able to get a better idea of what kind of speeds I'm normally doing.
Hopefully tomorrow won't be so DAMN hot either. 80* at 8:30 AM <> fun. Humid and w/ a headwind at that. Summer is here...

A new chain on a worn sprocket... Due to the pitch mismatch, the chain will not reliably mesh with the sprocket under load, and will tend to jump forward, skipping over the teeth.

8C, sunny, with a slight headwind. Felt a little fatigued this morning - Thursday morning's commute always seems to be the worst if I've ridden the previous three days. Overall, a pleasant trip.

45F. Downpour started when I was standing in the driveway this morning, and ended when I got to the parking lot at work. Nice and warm and sunny since!

Wonderful ride both ways. Got the new Brooks in the right spot after a week of tweaks Might try to raise the seat a bit more but the fore and aft is just right..already feels MUCH better then the Terry it replaced. Ride times are very consistent with the new tires. Fallen back in love with this bike after favoring one of the others through the winter.
The bummer is this Friday through next Friday is forecast thunderstorms. Looks like I'll be driving the van.

First commute on my new faster tires. I cut about 5 minutes off my 45 minute morning ride.
49 degrees when I left, nice and clear. I wish i had some sun glasses, as the sun is right in my eyes heading northeast at 6:00.

Sunshine this morning on damp roads; misty vapour rising off the asphalt; Stanley Park bright green and clotted with buttery sunbeams... a lovely interlude in the malingering girzle of the last week or so.
Didn't feel especially fit after overdoing the drinks again last night.

I ride in at my usual pace and lately, for some reason, seem to be attracting my fair share of Silly Commuting Racers on the bike path. I think I'm such an unlikely target on my big old black beater hybrid bike with milk crate. I'm not dressed particularly "racey" in my rolled up dress pants and tee shirt but somehow I'm ending up with people on my wheel as I roll down the bike path. It feels like every third person I pass takes it as a personal affront to their manhood.
I had no idea so many people even understood the concept of drafting never mind actually doing it!- and without announcing their presence and most annoying- never offering to take a turn at the front. (Not like I want them to either.)
But it's a bike path. It's got runners and geese and baby carriages and roller skaters. I don't want no wheel suckers on my butt when I ride to work.
Other than that it was a lovely ride both into work and back and I suppose I should be glad some people didn't have to fight the same blustery headwind I did because some big guy on a beater was shielding them.

Easy ride in at good temps. Well, going home yesterday was one of those days, where making a left with me in the front and 3 cars behind, and also one on the opposing street, also making a left. I made sure that he knew my intentions of making a left. I kept my eye on him, as I worry that the car will go straight while I am turning. The light turned green, we both started left, then I remembered that I forgot to look left, and sure enough a green car came barrelling through the red light, and I got my foot out of the clipless in time to stop. The opposing car stopped short also. Everyone was shaking their heads, knowing that I would have been run over had I not looked left. I hate those reminders about just how vulnerable we are in traffic.

I wimped out and drove today. The forecasters are calling for severe thunderstorms this afternoon, and I didn't feel like dealing with that. I also had one of my toughest commutes in a while yesterday, with tired legs from riding lots of miles this week, an afternoon high in the 90s, high humidity and a headwind all the way home. My average speed was 2 mph slower than the day before.

A tough one today, legs are tired, I'm tired, my right arm is sore from straining it earlier in the week (moving PC's), didn't eat too well last night, the bike feels slow and heavy with the new Conti Tour Ride's at less than max pressure. So, big deal, I was dragging, I'm still glad to have ridden-always am. Looks like afternoon T-Storms, hopefully I'll sneak out ahead of them. I was going to go riding this weekend but, may rest up instead.

Installed a new cassette last night to accompany my new chain (lesson learned - always buy them together), so chain slip is gone. Ride feels good and solid now. Was able to really enjoy having the bike computer this AM since I could finally actually press hard on the pedals and not have the chain go... ch-ch-ch-ch-clink. Sadly my legs were a little tired after a little pedicab work last night and not enough sleep.
Sadly no riding for me this weekend either. I can at least look fwd to going camping and getting out of the city. Maybe I'll get in a hike (and definitely some time at the lake) at the state park. I'll be good and refreshed come Tuesday! :-) Happy holiday weekend all!

Weather's back to "normal," whatever that is these days.
Think I'll stop by the LBS on my way home and look into upgrades for my old road bike.

Ha ha! My morning commute was tripled today
Instead of 8 miles I did 24 as I forgot my keys, ID and Blackberry so I had to go back home
I'm preparing for a tour that starts this weekend so I was distracted, plus some changes in my morning routine today. I hardly ever forget anything. I learned though that it was not a big deal. I could probably commute that much. I just had to eat a second breakfast once got to work

did a fast 40 mile fun loop this morning. Then a quick grocery store run on the bike then my ride downtown to work and then home. Fabulous weather. A total of 62 miles for the day.

91 deg heat in May is not nice. what happened to Spring? whoosh zipped right by. must be riding one of those carbon fiber weather patterns. the ride into work was nice 67 deg but that homebound trip was tough at 91. I am really not looking forward to summer if this keeps going up. though I will say I am pushing harder to get home faster to get out of the heat than I have in the past. :-) there is some benefit here.... my trip times are slowly but surely decreasing. edit: commute was 11 miles one way yesterday.

Yesterday, I got my first soaking on the way home for 2010. Prior to leaving work I checked online radar and then my coworkers started talking about the big storm coming so I got worried and headed out a little early. There was a bit of a downpour and so I took a few minutes to get my pannier covers out. I found one of them had the elastic band out of whack and was loosely fitting and that took time to patch up. So now the rain has subsided and I get going. A quarter mile later I catch up to the rain and I had to stop because the pannier cover was ready to fly off. Five minutes later I'm back on the road and getting wet, but decided to keep going.
About two miles from my destination the rain lets up and it nice an cool as the wind evaporates the water in my jersey. I ducked through a yellow caution light at my last intersection and thank goodness none of the drivers were in a big hurry to make a jackrabbit start.
Happy Commuting 2010!!
