How was the commute today? Continued.

It was raining hard, but I worked from home this morning. By 11:00 it had stopped raining and the temperature was around 26C/79F. It actually felt chilly, which is a sign of what this summer has done to me...
Ride back was fine except for almost slamming into a jaywalking pedestrian. She looked straight at me before attempting to step right in front of me -- I think she seriously misjudged how fast I was going. A loud "AAAAAAAAHHHH!" from me was enough to make her jump back, so disaster averted.

Thanks to my awesome LBS, the chain was fixed in a jiffy after Friday's mishap. Went to put the bike in the car (to take daughter to school -- 10 highway miles) and found front wheel flat for the second time in a week, necessitating a quick tire change (found some metal shavings inside the wheel, hopefully explaining the run of front wheel flats!)
So after dropping daughter off, I parked my car and I was back on the road this morning. I suspect that due to not being careful about positioning the bike in the car (I think) my front fender was loose and rubbing (the bolt holding the mounting bracket was loose). Took it off (praise for the quick release mount!) and stuck it in my backpack.
The ride itself was uneventful and pleasant. Sunny, but cool temps, traffic was light enough, and the bike performed flawlessly once the fender was removed :-)
Any hints on how to keep sunglasses from fogging at stoplights? I can see this becoming a real problem as the weather cools.

First commute on my new LHT. Picked up a 56cm from the LBS yesterday after i sold my Tricross Sport. Replaced the saddle and post with a B17 and Thompson I had setting around. Loved the ride in, much more comfortable and really not much slower than the Tricross when I was running 25mm Gatorskins. Maybe 2-3 minutes difference... maybe. Honestly its the engine my commute can be 1:05-1:20 for the 20 miles depending on where I am in my rest / train cycle.

Monday, Sep 13, 2010. 52F/11C. Overcast until I got to Cambie & Broadway whereupon it drizzled very lightly. Was riding with gears today. Chased a rabbit near River Rock casino to the CanadaLine bike bridge but never caught him (that disappointed me). Then while heading north on Cambie & 41st, I caught a mountain bike commuter and passed him. He caught up with me at the traffic light at King Ed.
Reaching downtown, I saw a white haired guy riding a road\hybrid bike with a medium sized tupperware container attached to his rear rack and a stack of flashing red lights mounted to the back of it. At the front, he has twin lights mounted to his handlebars with an additional accessories bar attached to his stem and another light there. In addition, he was wearing a visibility vest. I kinda felt naked with just my orange\yellow reflective striped viz. vest with flashing Planet Blinky attached to the back of my helmet.

Took a while to get started today. I had rented a car this weekend to run errands while my car is getting repaired and I wanted to return the rental first thing, so I did that. Then since I had left my bike at work over the weekend, I intended to take the bus to work. Having returned the car, I walked over to the bus stop but was expecting to take a particular bus not realizing that it wasn't running this morning for some reason. Watched two buses go by that would have gotten me to work, but I didn't realize they were going my direction... duh! So I finally checked the route maps and schedules and realized that I had missed not one but two buses (well, not really missed, just watched them stop, then leave.) Next bus wasn't for an hour. So I walked back home, changed into my riding clothes, tossed my bag into the basket of my back-up bike then rode to work. All in all, wasted about an hour and a half but I walked 3 miles and rode 5.5. No worse for the wear at the moment...

Boy, am I jealous!
Enjoy the new bike.
I had some new components on for the ride this morning (rear derailleur, crank set, and shifters) on the bike after replacing them on Friday night. Only had a short ride home from the co-op with them on that night, and didn't get to ride this weekend, so this morning was the first ride of more than a mile or two with them on. Pretty happy, I must say, though the RD needs a little more dialing in yet.
Ride in this AM was cool and dry. Barely broke a sweat. Probably wouldn't have broken a sweat if I didn't wear a helmet. Had a few other commuters say good morning as they passed or we were stopped at traffic lights, which is pretty rare, but was appreciated.
Loving the early fall weather... 70s for highs and 50s in the AM is pretty friggin' nice.

I always say "good morning" or mouth a greeting or nod to other bike commuters. But some rider just stare blankly ahead oblivious to others.

Wonderful ride into work. Had to take care of some work from home, so came in later than normal. That worked out. It got cold last week, so it was nice and warm when I came in.
I got worried when I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the forest north of town. We had a terrible forest fire in July, and I thought it was another one. Luckily it turns out it's a prescribed burn. whew
Looking forward to the ride home. Hopefully the smoke won't be an issue since the wind is blowing it mostly towards my house

Lovely! About 67 F and low humidity when I left this morning. Will be about 85 F also with low humidity on the way home. The sweat factor is definitely decreasing since its peak in August. Finally.

Was a pretty good commute except for almost getting hit by a box truck. 68F and sunny with winds from the SSW @ 14mph. Tried yet another route home. Now I just have to decide which one is better.

Nice short haul bringing my son to his first real day of Kindergarten today. He loved the whole trip, hooting and hollering on the TAB, pumping his fist and shouting BOO-YA! every few minutes. A little misty and it looked like rain so my son insisted I wear my rain jacket for the ride. Of course it was dry, but I showed up drenched from the inside out. Dropped off my son, locked up the TAB and rode up to Starbucks for some coffee and to read a bit more of Pedalling Revolution. Interesting recount of the bike movement. Let my son navigate the way home around Metrotown which was neat. The clouds had parted and I felt much cooler after I was allowed to take my jacket off. Looking forward to tomorrows commute!
Anyone no where to find decent fenders for a 24" wheel, preferably in the lower mainland? The TAB needs a fender for the fall.

The ride in today was easy, although chilly in the 50s F (lower teens C). I am hoping for a few more warmn nights as I have tomatoes on the edge of turning and I need just a few more nights of hot weather. After that whatever comes on the vine, will stay green into October.

Sunny, calm wind, and a comfortable 55F this morning. Still short sleeves & shorts weather for us northerners.
While riding, I was reviewing my mental clothing vs. temperature grid. When it's in the 40s, I switch to a light long sleeve top.
I reeled in & passed 4 cyclists, including one recumbent, but I didn't pass him. I haven't seen a 'bent in ages.

We are having quite a drought, but it is making for some beautiful weather for cycling. It hasn't rained appreciably in weeks. The heat and humidity are finally letting up, although afternoon temps are still way above normal. We should break the all-time record for 90+ days in a summer this week. My floor pump broke last week and the replacement I bought will not reliably fill my tires. So I ordered a rebuild kit for my old pump and plan to return the new one. I always pump up my tires before riding but couldn't get the new pump to work at all this morning; the head just won't engage right on the valve. So I'm riding a bike with tires that I pumped up last Sunday, and hopefully won't have any problems.

tarwheel, is it possible the new pump is adjustable for schraeder/presta and is not set correctly for your valve stems?

I found that if I keep them out slightly away from my face (further down the bridge of my nose) that they don't fog. It doesn't have to be much, especially if there is a breeze. Don't know if you've tried that, but it might be worth your while if you haven't.

I'm happy to say that I had no problems with fogging today, as I hit almost every light green. Great morning commute -- perfect weather, traffic was calm, if not light, and I managed to be in sync with most of the lights :-)
