How was the commute today? Continued.

Weather-wise, had a great morning at mid 50's F and no wind.
But I ran over a cat on the MUP. It was dark and as I came around a corner it dashed in front of me and I hit it just about the time I saw it. Got it with both tires. I was on my fixed gear and it knocked my left foot out of my clipless pedal. I didn't completely lose it, fortunately, but there I was going downhill with one foot clipped in. It took me a bit to slow down to turn around. When I went back the cat was gone. Hopefully it is alright.
This makes a dog, a opossum and a cat I've run over. I wish these critters would stay out of the way.

Sucked
So I did not bring my backpack with me this morning. My wife works next door to my school, so she took my clothes and bag in her van, and I was to stop and get it. About 2.5miles into my 6 mile commute I relize my wallet fell out of my pocket along the way. I turn around and now I am riding slowly, against traffic on the shoulder, looking down. I know its not worth the risk just for a wallet with $7 and a few credit cards and my license, but it was the heat of the moment. About 1.5 miles into backtracking, I stop at a red light, sit up and find my wallet, tangled in between my shirt and undershirt. Good times, but now I had to keep riding the other mile home, get my car, and drive to work otherwise I would have been late (I am a teacher and late is very frowned upon) . All in all it wasnt bad, I didnt lose anything, hit anything, get hit, break down, or be late, just put me in a bad mood.

Great commute in this morning. A little chilly at 37F and sunny with winds from the NNE @ 3mph, but it wasn't bad.

50° a little wind and I'm making good time, going about 22mph with my Magicshine on low power, pointing down at the road. There's a car approaching from the opposite direction who flashes his high beams. I wonder why as my light is definately not pointing up and in his eyes. Just then a ninja commuter whizzes past me, in my lane about a foot or so from me.
That would have been a nasty head-on collision.

When the alarm went off this morning it was raining. I thought installing fenders was supposed to end that? I was going to ride anyway, but the rain kindly stopped before I left. The roads were wet, but no standing water. And it was darker than usual because of the clouds. Luckily my commute route is pretty well covered with street lights. My light set up is more for being seen than seeing. I do have some better lights on order for night riding. Anyone else use spoke lights? I have this spider spoke light that I picked up a while back that I finally installed and I love it! It makes me way more visible. Thinking about getting some more.
My commute route passes by Grady High School where parents pull over and drop off kids. Today some of that area has no parking signs up, probably for trucks bringing in stuff for the Green concert this weekend. So two cars in front of me, the car pulls over slightly, but mostly stops in the road. As the car in front of me and me move to go around to the left, dumb kid in the back seat throws open her door and the car in front of me has to slam on brakes so he doesn't hit it. And I had to brake quickly too. Only the 2nd time I've had to stop that fast. Guess I did a decent job installing the new brakes. It helped that I was just getting started and not going that fast. Girl that got out of the car just stood there with a dumb look on her face. I didn't say anything, but she probably got a bit of stink eye.

Nice quiet ride in today. Woke up early enough to take the long route. 7C/46F. It's getting awfully hard to keep track of the trail in the dark when it's covered in fallen leaves.

Was nice weather this morning, cool but not cold. Had an old guy in a truck comment on my bright headlights.
Right before I got to work, there was a 2-foot-high pile of horse manure on the shoulder... looked like it had fallen out of a truck and slid a few feet. Eww.

Yesterday was sunny but cool & must have been national slowpokes' day - for the first time ever I was the passer rather than the passee. It was chilly enough in the morning to need full finger gloves.

Cold today, but it felt nice. Also made me realize I need to get gloves, so I ordered a pair from Braun's. Realized that I need to watch cars even more vigilantly as a driver in front of me turned right without signaling. Could have had a nasty surprise if I was going faster.

7C/45F. Cold. Had a toque under my helmet for the first little bit as the ears were cold. Went slower today due to aching quads from kickboxing workout. Cycling does not help...
Yelled at a driver of a pickup truck who cut waay too close to the bike lane turning right, then proceeds to drive in the bike lane while looking for a parking spot. Earlier, I was stopped at a red light when a cyclist comes off the sidewalk in front of me on the green light. Turns out she is a slow cyclist. So why does she come off a sidewalk, go in front of me only to be slow? Why not wait for me to proceed since I am the one on the road waiting at the light? <sigh> Why try and hold back the tide.
On the other hand, a letter I wrote to newspapers got published in two different local papers with different tones depending on the editing. So I can be too unhappy.

Unfortunately I had to call it quits early and have my friend come get me this afternoon. 64F and sunny with winds from the SSW @ 5mph. I was about 5.8 miles from school when my front derailleur cable snapped. I'm sure I could have set it where it was stuck in the middle chain ring, but then I would have problems when climbing the bigger hills on the way home, especially the one up to my road. I had to wait a little bit because my friend was still in class when it happened. It was a beautiful day so I didn't mind waiting.

-1C and a light head wind today, so I wore liner shorts under jeans, a headband for my ears, a light jacket and fleece gloves. I had to take the jacket off after about 5km. My long sleeve polypro baselayer is pretty good by itself once I'm warmed up. I was directly behind a diesel powered city lawnmower at one intersection, it took several blocks to blow that smell off.
On the way home I had a car yield the right of way to me, despite them being on main road and me at a stop sign on a side street with one foot off the pedal. Cars have done that while I've very, very slowly creeped up to an intersection. Its usually times like that where I run out of momentum before I remember to clip-out of a pedal.

13C and rainy. And dark. At least it wasn't windy. I hate potholes and drivers who honk at me when I signal my move away from the big potholes. Dude.... at least I signal unlike Ms. Driving A Honda who leaned on the horn before turning right at a stop sign (and didn't stop) and didn't signal.

Funny, I feel the exact same way about September. All a matter of latitude, I guess.
Ice on the bridges all week so far. 20s in the morning, high 30s to low 40s in the afternoon. Passed the first studded tired cyclist of the season today. Come on, snow!

Good ride in today, and I dressed for chilly, beacause it was at 40 F ( 4 C), but it was humid and rain is coming, so it was a warm ride. Yep, I can't give up my shorts either, at least until my knees start complaining, then I will listen.

39F with a light headwind. I've felt slow all week. I don't know what my deal is. Tires are inflated. I spin them off the ground and they're not dragging. 14-15MPH is about all I can comfortably handle, and I usually do 18-20 for the same effort. I'm wondering if it's the cold on my legs. Never bothered me before though.
Yesterday I had a bizarre interaction with a cager. He was trying to be nice but it was pretty funny. I was at a red light at a "T" intersection (must turn). I was turning left, so I was way over near the center line. Cager pulls up behind me and stops, but he's at an angle. Then he pulls up on my right (loads of room, no problem) and stops. I start wondering if he's going to try the left turn with me, so my guard is up. He says to me, "Excuse me." I look over at him. "I'm going to turn right." I said, "Uh, well I'm heading left, so, go for it!"

Some of them really have no idea how to deal with cyclists, do they?

Coming down Oakridge while it was still dark, a driver coming the opposite way wanted to turn left into their driveway. They STOPPED, SIGNALED, and waited for me to pass before turing!
