I run a couple of times a week so that I can run 1/2 marathons with my daughter. Also, I ride one day over the weekend as I don't like to go two days in a row out of the saddle.
Ride safe,

One of the great things about commuting by bike is that it forces you to exercise.
Lots of people know they should exercise, and many of them do it, but most who try to exercise because they know they should, at some point stop doing it. If you commute by bike, you keep at it, at least I have.
I wonder what the drop out rate is for those who commute by bike as compared to the usual manner in which people get their exercise. Seems to me, lots of people start to go to gyms, but few keep it up. I have no idea how many people start to run and then drop that. Maybe my 26 years of commuting is unusual, I don't know.

I rode a lot in the 80 but didn't have time for it by the 90's. I was blessed with crappy ankles so running has never been something I got into.
Stress filled job, smoking and Heredity all working against me 7 years ago at age 37 I survived "the widow maker".
I don't like paying for Gym's and then having to make time for them. I seem to have a full day from the time I get up till the time I go to bed and just didn't see me being able to dedicate time to "GO to the gym".
Little over 3 years ago I came to terms with a lot of anxiety over my heart issues and dug out my old Peugeot and started to ride again. I had taken a job 4 miles from my house where I was not tied to a desk and move around a lot moving equipment up to 70lb and it greatly improved my health. I decided commuting would be the best way to get the cardio exercise I still needed. Been loving it ever since and try to get a 20-40 mile ride in on the weekends.
So yes riding is the major part of my "exercise"
Now the pisser is my Job moved......CLOSER! I lost half my ride and in fact the part that had bike lanes that I liked the best. LOL
Soon to have a nice MUP in the area and I will start picking up an extra few miles on the way home and probably In as the MUP will run very close to my house to make up for the loss in commute once it gets completed.

Most of my weekly exercise comes from riding my bike. Most of my riding occurs on the way to or from work. And at lunch. So, I guess so, yes.

Run, kayak, swim. All done by bike along with 90 percent of my commute. I log somewhere around 100 miles of training miles per week, 25-30 running miles. I probably am up near 20k rowing and another 10k swimming in any given week.
But then again, I'm sorta insane, mostly.
I also log around 40 miles a week of singletrack on my mountain bike. I have a six hour race next month.

I know there have been a few people at work who started to commute by bike, ended up stopping.
I guess this wouldn't be the forum to find out just what percentage of people who start to commute by bike to work, stop, but that'd be something interesting to learn.
I Googled "exercise drop out rate" and found that gyms expect a 20 - 30% drop out rate for new sign ups.

Bikes: I have five of brikes
no running allowed..... doctor's orders...... bad knees...... i've already had one surgically rebuilt..... looking at potential knee replacement down the road..... ugh.
cycling is my main exercise (30 miles/day commuting + whatever for fun on weekends), though for 7-8 months of the year i also supplement it with a ton of kayaking. i try to get out on the water with every free moment i have (when i'm not on the bike) when the weather allows. i also go through starts and stops with fitness programs/weight training. i start it up, get kinda fit, then get bored after 3 months, give it up, let myself go, then realize a year later how soft i am, recommit myself, stick with the weight training for another 3 months, then get bored again and so on. the main problem i have is that i can't exercise indoors. it just feels wrong and i get so freaking bored being inside after awhile.
oh well, cycling and kayaking will always be my true passions. if i had easy, cheap access to a pool, i could see myself sticking with swimming as well because i love the water and swimming is such a great whole body workout.

I ride the 22-mile RT 2-5 times per week, do a 15+ minute weight routine every weekmorning, ride road or MTB on the weekend and have been running 7-12 miles per week, to train for a marathon in a few months.
Saturday, I injured my calf while running 7 miles-I had an identical injury to the other calf a few months ago that was finally healed. So the marathon training isn't really going all that well, but it's something to shoot for.
