I went out riding today and did 15 miles. It's only the third time I've been out so for me 15 miles is an accomplishment seeing as the first time I went out I came home after 5 miles and collapsed -- and that was on a FLAT trail! Today was full of hills! I'm not even tired today. I could have gone longer today but the incompetent weatherman said a severe storm was coming in and I wanted to be back before it hit. Well it's been 90 minutes since I got home and there still no bad weather in site! In fact, it's gorgeous outside! It looks like the storm isn't supposed to hit now until late in the evening. I'd really like to go out again, but other things have now gotten in the way. (I would rather be on the bike). Oh, and can anyone tell me why when I do go out riding every place I bike is always uphill and it seems I am continually bucking a very, very, strong headwind? At least the weatherman got that part it right . . . it is very, very windy today!

Got off the plane yesterday after a week with the family out in the Southwest touring a few Parks. Met up with NealH this morning on the BRP for a 45 mile ride on the Pigeon Loop. I suffered on the long climb back to the car. I guess a week off the bike didn't help. 45.25 miles in 3:11 ride time. We had 3800' of climbing on the route. 2700' on the last climb. I keep thinking my speed will improve but so far it's not happening. The heat didn't help me either.

My ride today was fantastic but very hot, My daughter and I and a friend and his son did the Cycle Flagler ride.
Miles today: 50+
Mileage this month: 306+
Mileage this year: 2314+
Percent of goal achieved: 33%
Over/under riding days this year vs. last year: -3 days
Over/under miles this year vs. last year: 190+ miles
Average miles per ride this year: 36+
Average miles per ride this month: 51+
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 4685, this could turn out to be an 8,000 mile year

Great weather this morning, 71⁰F when I left home at 6:00 AM and 89⁰F and very hot when I got back this afternoon. My daughter and I left home this morning and drove to Palm Coast Florida to do the Cycle Flagler Ride sponsored by the PC Rotary Club. We met one of the guys that I have been riding with and his son that had driven up this morning as well. We arrived at the starting point at about 7:15 for the 8:00 start. We checked in at the registration desk and picked up our goodie bag the hit the breakfast table. Love those muffins.

We had a police escort for about 3 miles from the Chamber of Commerce building starting point then over the Moody Blvd Bridge to Highway A1A. It was a mass start with about 485 riders so we were able to take both lanes of the 4 lane east bound highway. At A1A we made a turn south along the ocean and things started to stretch out and we were on our own. My friend’s son had decided to ride with the rocket ships up front so we did not see him again until we got back for the BBQ at about 1:00 PM.

The three of us rode the first 20 miles to the first SAG at about a 16+ mph rate. The weather was starting to get warm but we had a good breeze off of the ocean and lots of shade when we turned inland and rode along the intercostal waterway. Lots of very expensive homes with big boats at the dock out back.

As soon as we left the SAG #1 we had to climb the Granada Blvd. Bridge. Now for you people that live in mountain states these bridges would just be a hick up for you, but for us flatlanders these bridges can tax our legs and this was the second high bridge of the day. The bad part was having to brake on the downhill side of this bridge due to a sharp right turn at the bottom.

The 16 miles to the next SAG #2 was not as pleasant as the first 20 due to increased traffic and no shade and a some head wind. We were still averaging almost 16 mph to this point which is a good average for this old boy. We took a quick break and then rode to the 40 mile mark where we had to make a decision.

Go right to do the 62 mile ride or left one mile back to the start. My friend decided to head back to the starting point and call it a day. My daughter and I opted for the 62 mile route which proved to be a bit of a mistake.

Shortly after leaving my friend we turned north into a stronger head wind and my computer was telling me that it was a 100 degrees in the sun. In the pure sun light it reads about 10 degrees higher than the actual temp so we had to be riding in about 90 degree weather with no shade in sight. We did about another 5 miles and we were out of water so we decided that we had had enough and turned around and headed back. When we got back to the main road we stopped at the first gas station for some Gatorade and some air conditioning. Even though we slowed down a great deal for the last 10 or 11 miles we still averaged about 15 mph.

This was a great ride and we will do it again next year, I just wish they would do it in a cooler month.

No ride today. :(

Tires pumped up... check
Gear in the car... check
Frame pump and seat bag mounted,,, check

Ooops, I planned to wash the dogs today, no problem with only a 30-45 minute delay. While washing the third of my medium sized dogs he bolted with his lead around my wrist. POP! Rinsed him off and went in the house. Luckily not broken, perhaps just a slight sprain with little swelling.

The plus side is I only have to mount the trunk rack this Tuesday.

Yesterday I did 40 miles with my club. The sun never came out like it was supposed to, and it never got out of the 30s (F) I'd believed the weatherman and dressed for 50s, and my toes froze! Good thing I added a t-shirt under my jacket before we started! Other than my toes, I was fine.

Today I went to a nearby state park and rode laps on the roads inside the park. All told, 46 miles on a very winding, almost never flat route. The big difference was, the sun came out and it got to 80F. It was gusty, though - wind was 13 gusting to 30. I didn't have a lot of gas left in my legs, but I was able to lay down some heat a few times. Top speed for the day was 42 mph, and except for 3 or 4 small hills at the start of the day, I buried my buddy on all the climbs. I think I'm going to walk funny tomorrow, though... If it's any consolation, so will he.

Very modest 6 mile ride on the Screamer this evening. Unseasonably warm today - we didn't have to worry about frozen toes.

41 miles yesterday on the Tour Easy & 11 miles today (in the rain) on the Raleigh Marathon.

Sun popped out late in the day and the temp. soared into the 70's. I thought the world was going to melt!! Took advantage of the heat to wash and clean up the Volae a little bit. Maybe me and the Volae will have a ride tomorrow?!?!

20 mile recovery ride this evening, after getting whupped on yesterday's 35. I was still pretty tight in the neck and shoulders this morning and did not think I'd be able to work the kinks out today. But, chili plasters and gentle stretching did the trick. Body is fine this evening after the easy ride, and I got to see three healthy dear cross in front of me.:)

Run today, 31 mile ride yesterday. I have a century coming up on Saturday, and I'm trying to "regulate" my training so I have strength for the ride. I've lost some of that over the last week, along with four pounds (funny how that works!). I'll ride about 45 miles tomorrow, then...take it easy(er)!

az_cyclist 04-11-11 10:09 AM

Didnt ride Saturday because of the rain, but did get in 43.7 yestderday. It felt great to be out on the road!

bikethom 04-11-11 10:25 AM

Not today, because my legs are sore from the Cheaha Challenge Sunday! Did anyone else on here ride?

cehowardGS 04-11-11 02:13 PM

Did my regular double commute..Motorcycle and bicycle. At 5:30 am, took the gixxer(motorcycyle)for the swift 20 mile ride to the gym. The weather was turning so good, I had to haulazz back home to dumped the gixxer, and grabbed my 85 Raleigh Competition which has a ride like no tomorrow!! ;) The 5 mile ride to the subway was sweet. The Raleigh has perfect gearing for me, the low is sweet and so is the high. Got to get all my bikes geared this way..

Okay, here comes the downer. I get off two stops before my regular stop, so I can ride. I am in the downtown area now, in fact, downtown Baltimore City..I got flashing lights front and rear, plus safety vest, and riding in turn lane to turn. All of a sudden a car wheels out from in back of me, cuts in front real close. After the turn, I come up along side the car, and told the driver (a lady) you tried to run over me!! She fired back, you need to put that dam thing on the sidewalk, and gave me the finger!! I got off about 5 six letter curse words, and everybody saw what was going on and gave me the high sign for cursing her out. However, I didn't feel that good about it..
It is a shame the peeps here are mostly anti-bicycle.

Not going to let that spoil my ride/day!! :D Getting ready to get off, and no need for the long under armour, I am doing my Pearl Izum shorts and tank top, safety vest, and I am outta here!! ;)

Oh, here is my sweet 85 Raleigh when I parked for breakfast this morning...;)

Got in a nice 24 mile ramble today, (rode 2 days in a row, YEA!), Stopped by the America The Beautiful Park, in downtown Co. Springs, at the "lock washer" fountain, LOL, ok it's actually the "Julie Penrose Fountain" but it looks like a giant lock washer: (sorry, looks like I did a double exposure, rats!)

Then rode more of the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail to one of the Low Bridges over Fountain Creek:

Then headed out for the Cheyenne Canyon information center and a rest sitting next to a little, "babbling brook", a good time for a snack! Then headed home. 60+ the first ride without, "The Leg Warmers", YEA!! Looks like RAIN tomorrow, RATS!

Great weather this morning, 71⁰F when I left home at 9:00 AM and 83⁰F and very hot when I got back this afternoon. Did the usual ride to Panera for bagels and iced tea, then north through Heathrow to Orange then on to Deer Path. We took a water break at Deer Path then headed south into an 8 to 25 mph head wind. We stopped at Panera again to refill our water bottles then headed home. Good ride today.

NO, but i did manage to get in 18 holes yesterday afternoon, first round of the year. Shot 79. I used to be good.

old 04-12-11 03:33 PM

Yesterday was pretty much a rest day of only 4 miles on the mountain bike to the post office and bank, with rain chasing me home.

Today was partly sunny and I was able to cover 37 miles at a pretty good pace (for me anyway). A good day out, with quite a few other cyclists enjoying the sunshine as well.:thumb:

jimmuller 04-12-11 03:34 PM

I got out for 25 miles on my faithful '72 UO8. (Yes, I bought it new. My good bike is a '73 Raleigh Gran Sport.) No point in being an old-timer if you don't ride your old-time bike every so often. A glorious day (even if a cool one).

11,291 miles today.
It was a great day for a ride today so I thought I would do a few extra miles. 11,291 and I have the garmin to prove it.. Ha Ha. Never had that happen before. No cadence or distance showed on the garmin all day. But when I uploaded the info... I thought I was a little more tired today. LOL. I had to pare the cadence thingie with the garmin and it works fine now, I hope anyway.

bjjoondo 04-13-11 02:28 PM

22 miles under the sun, until the dark clouds started "rolling over Pikes Peak", then made a beeline for home!! Weather is supposed to turn cold, wet and WINDY for Thurs. and Fri. so this will be the last RIDE, till the weekend for me.

Ranger Dan 04-13-11 04:47 PM

I had a great ride yesterday -- 32 miles with 75 degrees and the wind wasn't too bad (i.e., 20 mph or less). The warmest day in 6 months and the first this year where I didn't have to have tights (or more). Today the temperature is 40 degrees lower, the wind is gusting to 35 mph and I'm at work, so no ride today. Chance of snow later this week, so I'll have to put the road bike away and take out the mountain bike again.

robtown 04-14-11 09:32 AM

I rode the half mile from my Volvo mechanic's place to work. It was sunny and I wore work clothes. The bike was having issues with the cantilever cable hanger I had McGuyvered so I'm glad I didn't take it for the full 8 mile commute.

missjean 04-14-11 11:35 AM

This week - Monday, rode the 2 miles to visit my Dad, then took the long way home, so maybe 12 miles total.
Tuesday, went on the fist group mtb ride of the year, whew, it a work-out!
Today, just out to visit my Dad & back again, but there was a strong head wind on the way back so I'm counting the ride back as 2 1/2 miles ;-)

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 12:58 AM.
