Thanks. I guess I'm a little shaken, because he's the only person I've known well who was struck by a car, and it was on roads I ride often. He's a very diligent rider who always wears very bright clothing, so I know he was doing all the right things. I know it can happen to any of us, and does occasionally, but this one hit home.

What addictions are accepted? I can offer beer, Swiss cheese with Triscuits, Italian steel, American steel, Campagnolo, tubular tires, the Internet, and pistachio nuts. Former addictions - ... well, we're not really interested in those, are we? TMI?
Ok, I'd better add Emma Peel to my list.

My wife got a new sewing machine today. Just under $1300 with the tax. My bikes have to stay in the garage but her new machine wil stay in the den when she's not using it. Why can't my bikes stay in the den???

I don't ever question the "War Department" on decisions of this magnitude. I just quietly store my bicycles in the garage.

Recent Sewing Maching Purchase...
I can't quibble about bikes staying out of living areas - that's just a rule in my home.
My wife located and bought her dream sewing machine over the winter, a 1959/1960 Singer Model 410G. We found it in WVA for ~$70, I think, with cabinet. To get the linkages free and working smoothly, it took a few surgical applications of Marvel Mystery Oil and some maniuplation, but it works nicely now. Smooth, silent, powerful - it's an awesome piece of machinery, for sure.
Anyway - she wouldn't hear of getting a "modern" machine.
Kind of like how many of us think about bikes...

My partner is big into cycling like me, so we have to be careful about feeding each other's obsession. Left to our own devices, there'd be ONLY bicycles in our home. We make a conscious effort to have balance.

Too many in this forum seem to be not interested in the personal achievement side of cycling.

These are really good for either spicing up your store bought shrimp cocktail sauce or making your own horseradish/ketchup sauce. I use a little of each every time. Sometimes I just spoon up a couple by themselves.....The sign of a true addiction.

Personal achievement and cycling are JUST THAT! To some shaving a second off their time, to some off us riding is in itself one.
After a back injury and major surgery in 1978 (lots o nerve damage to legs) relearning how to ride my bike "PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT"
After a neck injury and 2 surgeries 1999 + 2000 (nerve damage to one arm and hand) riding my bike "PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT"
After reconstructive shoulder surgery 2013 being released to go and ride my bike "PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT"
On the subject of beverages of choice, stouts and porters for me, if you can see thru it NO THANKS. The IPAs etc leave me wondering why I wasted my time drinking them.

I'm so lucky to have never (yet) overcome such setbacks in my personal health. Hats off to you bud. My only mentionable personal achievement outside of a few, mostly flat, century rides is when I stopped smoking in my late 20s and started riding......Pales in comparison. My hat's off to you bud.

My theory is the posters > 60 years old who live in windy, hot regions will have more of a reason to post in this thread than others. But then again those who are < 60 might just have more just as many reasons since they don't yet qualify for as many discounts.

About 5 years ago I got diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome Disorder/Autism, and I have come to find out that my addictions have generally been 1) Self-medicating for problems that you didn't admit to having back in the day (anxiety disorders, PTSD, yada, yada), or, 2) Hard-wired compulsive obsessions with the technical term of "special interests" within the ASD/Autism community. 41 motorcycles! I could have been obsessed with and owned and traded 41 Beanie Babies for alot less $ if I had known that was all it was. So now I'm trying to head off the non-stop cycle of buy/mod/sell (at a loss of course). Sigh.

Well, many of us turn to cycling as a form of self-medication. When I'm at odds with the rest of creation it helps me to settle down.

Not to be rude or a typical forum antagonist, but lots of people don't ride for achievement. It's just a lifestyle for me, always has been. That's not to minimize others accomplishments, but it's just something I wouldn't think of for myself. I guess I would be somewhat proud that Im in my mid 50's and healthier than a lot of people my age, and that would be due to lifelong cycling obsession, however.

My cycling personal achievement for today was washing my bike. I even got a rag and cleaned between the cassette cogs.
Now I'm grilling chicken rubbed with Southern Soul dust.

Good job on the cleanup. I need to do that on my primary road bike now. I want to do the full clean, wheels off, chain off, cassette off, etc. It's time for a thorough cleaning.
