I agree, wholeheartedly!

Nice logo, I am hoping to start dental school there in 2006.

The U was a darker, more gothic and mysterious place when I was there. Many good memories. Dinkytown has rebounded a bit and grown a couple of interesting bike shops since I left. (Oddly located just a couple doors from each other.) PS - hot and spicy chicken at Camdi is the best thing to ever happen to lunch.

Bikes: 3 of them

you guys want a baited response?

commi? just community- I think it is cool to have a local race scene and a 'good' local trail system. many lbs support those. I suppose your feelings are quite opposite of mine.

A whiny customer-hating attitude? big words... the lbs's I know love to bike and love to share it with others, I have only met a few owners who are unreasonable. IMHO it is the participants in the races that whine more than the promoter/ supporter. I think it is great that someone would choose to support every biker in the community. That shows love man, not hate. Quit being a rockstar hater... join the world of love!

HATE! KILL LOVE jk

Dude- my LBS is sweet and I will do what I can do support them. If you read all of the previous posts, you will see that no one is actually ripping on any LBS, just folks that misunderstood what was going on in this thread. LBS are great, everyone here that doesn't buy thier stuff from Xmart would agree.

No problem, just posting the positives of buying locally vs online. Which was kinda your question. No one else pointed them out so...

fair enough... I should have been more clear as to what my question actually is. I've never doubted the benefits and rewards of supporting the LBS... thanks.

I still don't think you should have asked them to install those mail order brakes for free, though.

Yeah, in reality I am pretty hard to offend, but on this forum I enjoy letting loose This topic is irresistable anyway...

Well- after I got off work this afternoon I called the guy I have been dealing with (Dave O- Vice President of Stores) just to confirm a few things and then I headed into the shop to write a check and size up for a few of the accessories. Well the store is out of stumpys, except for one 15" ladies version. They checked some other stores and they only have 18" bikes, which I will try this weekend but I am looking more for a 19" or 21" (I'm 6'00" and 175#). So, it is back to negotiations, I don't really want to get the '06 b/c they only added 10mm of travel for an extra $100, so if it doesn't work, maybe I'll take a look at the '05 closeout FSR stumpy, but I don't know b/c I'm not a real big full suspension fan (simply for the reason that you don't get as good of components for the money), but if I can get a good deal...
I did ride around on the cannondale f600 a little, but I am pretty set on the stumpy. I'm pretty bummed, so back to the fridge for another beer

Geeze can't all the little boys and girls get along in this topic. I only have one comment to say.. Im very confused about all this. But lemme get this straight, the lbs is refusing service on the bike for free if you ask them to install brakes? I mean most lbs give free tune ups and free service on the bike if you buy it from them, do you still get that? If im right all your going to have to do is pay for the service on the installation of the brakes right?

Nope, just a huge misunderstanding here on the forum. Th LBS is a pretty good one. I would say that it is just easier to forget and all move on with out lives

I believe most lbs offer free service on original parts only. So lets say you buy a bike and upgrade the brakes. They may not offer the warranty or service on that item. Especially if you never bought the said item from them. To complicate matters- if you bought the brakes from them, got them to install it on your new bike you also purchased from them and it is all on the same bill - then they probably will offer service and warranty.

Yeah, If I buy the brakes there, they will service and warranty them. But, I don't need disc-brakes where I am out in MN, I want them for when I go back to WY. So, I'll just buy the brakes later and install them myself. I will utilize the LBS services, and I like being involved, but I will most likely do most of my own servicing any way. The V-brakes are an upgrade to what I have now anyway. Plus, more money for other stuff

too bad about the raw deal. a 18' wouldn't work? longer stem maybe, a set back seat post? I does feel nice to get a deal on a bike.
I would hate to have to pay full price for a '06. If your friend has not ordered the '06 bikes yet, sometimes you can give them money upfront ( not all ) and then wait for the bike to arrive- month or a few. And then pay the rest with a slight discount. This makes it easy on their ordering.

good luck

I should also add, I have never used a warranty and I have used their service only once- maybe 7 years ago... and I have bought 3 bikes since then... I would do what you suggested- buy them later, and install them yourself.

Great News! Dave O. found a stumpy for me in Madison, WI, which the guy in the store I went to yesterday could not see in his computer. Dave O should be calling me later this afternoon to talk details, but I think they'll just ship it over!

Don't worry about etiquette, I am not proper, I am blunt so I have no reservation in telling you to get over it. By-the-way, I didn't expect anything:
"Dave O.-Sorry to keep emailing, but I am pretty excited about the Stumpjumper. I am still looking at pricing stuff and accessories. I really liked the shop there in Eden Prairie, but I haven't stopped at any of the other Erik's so I can't really compare. But I am thinking that Erik's is the best LBS around.
Anyway, I have attached a spreadsheet of what I want to buy and where I will probably buy it. The spreadsheet is in excel format so if you can't open it let me know and I will email you a pasted version. I know that your matching policy only applies to stores in the TC area but I found a sweet deal on the Stumpjumper that maybe you guys can match. Here is the link to the price I am coming up with:
https://kozy.com/site/itemdetails.cfm?ID=3687
See the spreadsheet for the prices on the rest of the accessories and then let me know what you can do and we can go from there-"

The Spreadsheet in question:
Item Purchase Price $ MSRP $ Purchase Location Notes
stumpjumper $979.99 $1,300 Erik's Bike Shop base model, add disc brakes
Avid BB7s $161.19 $220.00 Pricepoint.com buy in a advance and bring into Erik's
Helmet $29.99 $39.99 Erik's Bike Shop Specialized Air Force- buy Theresa a woman's version ($30)
Winter gloves $55 $55.00 Specialized BG Radiant glove
shoes/pedals $99.98 $230.00 Pricepoint.com Sette Epic Shoe w/Wellgo M3 pedals
Computer $69.99 $99.99 Erik's Bike Shop
Bar Ends $15.99 $15.99 Specialized Erik's charges $24.99??? Same product
Cage $16.99 $16.99 Erik's Bike Shop
Water bottle $3.99 $3.99 Erik's Bike Shop Erik's bottle
Total $1,433.11 $1,982
Theresa's helmet $30 $39.99
$1,463.11 $2,022

It might be tough to read (I just pasted it from excel), but the chart is not the point, the point is he inferred and I never asked or expected.
You could use a little more tact. Just remember that when you buy at the LBS, you pay a little extra but you get a little extra too. You get someone to bring your bike to when things go wrong.

They are a business (its not like I'm stealing it from a handicapped kid or something), they aren't gonna do business with me if they lose money, I don't want them to go broke, I LIKE THIS STORE. Does everyone here pay MSRP when buying cars?

There is a reason you dicker so hard with car dealers ... they're *******s.

Dealing with bike shop people, you'll find that they're mostly honest folk trying VERY HARD to make a living in a seasonal business. I think you are burning your bridges here buddy. The way things work in this biz is you're a good customer and then the LBS starts throwing stuff back your way. If you start throwing things in their face like this, and you'll ruin your good will. You may find your repairs will cost double what they might have otherwise.

You set the tone for the relationship when you started behaving like Wal-Mart with your spreadsheets. You're hitting your LBS in the pocket book, don't be surprised if they hit you back when you've broken a part and you desperately need to replace it for the afternoon trail ride.

When community spirit is mistaken for communism, America becomes a far meaner, uglier place. I hope you learn something from all those liberals in Minnesota before you leave.

Just another update on the stumpjumper: Dave O is having the bike shipped to the branch nearest me so I should have it soon.

Even though it is difficult(he set himself up for some great responses), I am going to ignore willtsmith_nwi. I hope you're proud of me oldtaylorcraft
