Just got done with this one yesterday.

I had a friend who wanted to get into mountain biking, and he was riding this clapped out Trek 830. It was a bit small for him, too. Well he started getting into it so I traded him his crappy Trek for an older Hardrock I had that was just a bit big for me, but working nice.

Anyways I've been meaning to get this Trek going for awhile and I just got around to finishing the build last nite.

199? Trek 830. Chromo frame and fork.
Acera drivetrain and controls, except for Deore RD.
Some sweet Diamondback platforms.
Some decent, very strong, aluminum wheels with WTB Allterrainasuarus semi-slicks.
Tekro V-Brakes.

I took it out for a shakedown spin today. It's meant to be a round'towner but I had to get it out on a bit of trail to verify it's off-road ability. Shifting is best done with finesse because I beat the Acera stuff half to death when it was on my Kona, but all gears check out and the bike handles wonderfully!

Only thing is that my hands where killing me afterwards. Went out and picked up a pair of squishy Oury grips to replace the Kona ************s. Hope they help.

You can see most of what I have to say about the Rapide in my post above. Sigmas, especially the X5s, are very good forks. No flex, bottomless feel, good rebound damping. Stanchions are 36 mm - - mega stout, ultra forgiving when you blow a line, blow a landing, smack a big hole or rock . . . whatever. It sucks it up and you wonder why you didn't crash.

I totally understand your excitement. I was in the same position about two weeks ago, except I ordered a dwag deluxe. So far, I am extremely happy with my Kona.

Here is my Kona "A" fully suspended single speed. It has blue Chris King hubs and a pink headset, Avid Juciy 7's, Thomson stem and post, SLR saddle, Fox float rl rear shock and Talas forx. It pretty sweet!! I have even figured out that if I run solid housing from the top tube cable stop (zip tied to the seat stay) down to the derailluer I can run a 1x9 geared setup also!! What do ya think??

How are you keeping the chain tensioned when the suspension is moving? I looked but don't see a tensioner.

Look closely and you'll see the two slots/bolts. It's a sliding dropout section like the Unit has, I believe.

I saw that, but wouldn't the length of the chainline change as the suspension goes thru it's travel?

The rear suspension pivots around the BB shell hence no chain growth!! It has two HUGE cartridge bearings that clamp around the BB....

That would explain it. Thank you. Very nice looking bike by the way.

I've heard that design is prone to pedal bob. Has that been your experience?

I have an older Rocky Element with the faux bar design and a simple Vanilla Coil shock. Spinning SMOOTH in the saddle It never bobbed. Standing up hammering it did.

Either way, platform damping works so good that swing arm and faux bar designs are competitive again. I test road a new Element with a Fox Propedal shock and the difference was dramatic. Not the same as a 4 bar, but then it's not a 4 bar, is it?
