I also planned the hardcore 123 mile option with a Cat 3 AND a Cat 2 climb. The cat 2 climb is an awesome one lane desert road that follows a creek. Plenty of curves with no guardrails to ruin the view.

that's 2 challenges defined. anyone else going to commit to a challenge in the new year?

I'm doing the Cherohala Challenge, unless there's another rock slide or something.

Ridley is for CX, Giant is for road.

Triathlon training. Though I'm starting to really like it as a form of exercise.

If 260 is your tempo, then you have a nice FTP. Your cadence is a bit low.

Don't let them steer you away from this idea, mz. Steel bikes are not generally flexy or mushy. It depends what bike, what condition, your capabilities, etc. A lot of flex comes from wheels, anyway, and they will be modern. I almost did the same thing with my Wojcik but decided to sell it to a collector and buy the Felt instead. I couldn't deal with wrecking an irreplaceable custom bike in a race.

P.S. Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

I was doing it as a heart rate tempo. I got a little high on a couple of the intervals though, heart rate should have been 150 - 155 but I got high on a couple of them. My comfortable cadence is 85 - 90 so I wasn't too low but it was lower than it should have been.

I'm starting racing in 2011. I'm sure I'm in for a rude awakening, and thus a challenge.

I would love to get in shape to enter a race this coming year, not sure if it is going to happen or not though.

I don't care if I get blown out the back. There are plenty of strong 50+ Masters in my area to provide a challenge, so it is a likely outcome. I need to know if I'll get that rush again. It's better than any drug. If not, then I'll settle for being a group ride junkie, as I really enjoy riding with others.

Interesting that you would use HR tempo when you have power available.

My problem is that after being out a couple of years and gaining 80ish pounds I have a long way to go to race cat 3. I know at this point I would be dropped in the first few minutes, or at the first real acceleration. That wouldn't do anything to help my riding so I might be a year away from racing at this point.

I'm basing it off of my old training schedule when I was being coached. I don't completely understand his reasoning but I had pretty good results when I was being coached by him. I figure if it ain't broke don't fix it.

thanks jen and mm

It's not a very stiff frame BUT the wheels are 36 hole Deep Vs that are plenty stiff.

I did the solo 135 in Washington last year. Blewett and Stevens Pass, with some Chumstick Highway tossed in.

I think I will try for Super Randonneur this year.
