What is this obsession with vomit? Makes me sick.

Very effective forms of lactate threshold training. It was at the core of conditioning for both rugby and soccer--two sports that require high levels of stamina and running.

That's a different kind of running than going down the road.

There is nothing that will increase your stamina and condition your lungs and heart better than suicide drills. Distance running is only one of the many tools marathon runners (should) include in their training regimen.

It will allow you sustain a faster speed for a longer period of time.

At the beginning of each season, when we were conditioning, we used to have to run X amount of suicides in X amount of time, and/or vomit at the coaches feet before we were allowed to leave. Watch a rugby match sometime, there's a reason why those big, fat looking guys can keep up at full speed for the entire match. I used to run a mile in 5.30 thanks to this stuff.

Fast + longer = mo' betta

Plus, I'd much rather go onto a grass field and train, rather than look like a freak sprinting down the sidewalk.

general rule of thumb. if all you care about is distance, then run/bike/swim distance. If you care at all about your speed doing so, you need intervals. You will be able to go longer and faster

Well this may be crazy but I am leaning towards signing up for a tri this June, it's in the poconos called the black bear tri, it's Olympic length, what's cool is the bike section is VERY hilly which I like.

Anyone ever do it?

Fishy I think the run is fairly flat but I will be fast-walking it anyway.

Thanks for pointing out the faulty link, I fixed it....that was an old cut/paste of my new wheels.

Mrs. Herbie did not worry about speed until her 2nd marathon, and even then did only limited speed work. She does more now, but she has been at it for a few years.

VV - you would like her spreadsheet. It tracks miles on various shoes as well as time, pace, and all sorts of other nerdy runnerpantz stuff.

Here is her January shoe wear....

Shoe Mileage Totals
Brooks Infinity 29.41
Brooks Ravenna orange 27.63
Brooks Launch 0
Brooks Ravenna 64.58
Nike Equalon 0

No wetsuit but I will get one if I do this event. My tri friend just sent me a link for a "Volt" (isn't that a helmet??) wetsuit for $99 do you know if that is a good one?

I'm not running. I'm simply refuting the "advice" some posters are trying to give VG that she should be doing wind sprints, shuttle running, and puking in trash cans in order to prepare for her first half marathon.

Give me a break.

I just started doing them on the treadmills. 1 min sprint, 1 min jog, basically.

My goal for the half is to finish, at around a 12:00 pace. It probably sounds like I'm setting my goal low, but I'm just being realistic based on how I've been able to do in training at this time.
