I'm just wondering what would posses someone to hold onto a moving vehicle in the first place? There is definately much more to this story than a jack ass driver killing someone ( ie the cabbie who ripped the guys leg off ).

1) Al and Michael are in an accident at an intersection.
2) Al tries to get Michael to remain at the scene for the police.
3) Michael speeds away, Al catches up to him on foot(?) at the next intersection.
4) Al reaches in to Michael's car, grabs the wheel or the door and yells for him to wait for the police.
5) Michael speeds off, cuts in to the eastbound lane and on to the curb. Whether this is because of Al holding the steering wheel or Michael trying to knock him off his car using the poles, I don't know.
6) Al is hit by some streetlight poles, and finally lets go after being smashed in to a mailbox at what some city workers claim was 90km/hr.
7) Michael backs up over Al to turn back in to the westbound lane, heads off and parks at the hotel.
I'm really curious why Michael felt the need to accelerate to remove Al from his vehicle, instead of just stop and push him off the car if he felt he was a threat, or stop and wait for the police. Hell, Michael is supposed to be a damn good boxer, he could have easily removed Al from the car without resorting to killing him.
I'm sure the PR firm Michael has hired will put spin after spin on this, I just hope to see some justice done.
Ride safely, everyone.

One thing that has been bugging me is the fact he was out on his anniversary dinner with his wife. Wine, seems like a reasonable bet. Stopping on the side of the road would necessitate a test, but being out of your car in front of the hotel bar, where you might have had a few quick shots while your wife calls 911 and the lawyer.... you see where I'm going. If ANYONE knows how to get away with it, it'll be The Prince of Toronto.
Thus alcohol ceases to be an issue, because it CANNOT be proven. Both he and his wife are lawyers, so they KNOW how to do this.
Nice to see some of you at the ride, glad to see so many people. I think Al would have liked it. Someone said upwards of 2000 people, but I have no way of knowing being a terrible judge of that sort of thing.

I know that a lot of questions need to be answered on the incident, but regardless of what Al was doing, why did Bryant speed off down the street when Al grabbed a hold of the ______ (door? steering wheel?) anyways!? That was a dumb move, no doubt.

ah but he wasn't roadside, so his levels are irrelevant. easy pessie
The ride ..., it was quite a nice turnout of commuters, messengers, the-bike-lane-on-bloor-people, parent riding with their kids, and folks et al. It was chilled and subdued with the police providing ROW access during red lights(tyvm). Near the end the whole mass from it's 'parking' at Bloor and Avenue, all moved right to allow an ambulance though. The CM trumpet guy was there doing his thing and a guy blowing a conch(sp?) shell. I found the shell eerie, gave me chills for some reason.

as for holding on... I'd call it an OMFG fear response.

It sounds more like he was holding on until the guy started speeding off. Which seems pretty reasonable at which point guy gets run over.

The Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism
1). A Conch Shell - It is an emblem of power, authority and sovereignty whose blast is believed to banish evil spirits, avert natural disasters, and scare away poisonous creatures. The sound of a conch is said to represent the deep, resonant voice of Buddha the conch is used in Tibetan Buddhism to call together religious assemblies. During the actual practice of rituals, it is used both as a musical instrument and as a container for holy water.

I wish it had been brought on by better circumstances but FINALLY someone ****ing says it in the media, definitively and what it means. I want to photocopy a few thousand of these articles and start handing them out.

Interesting that he said they aren't going after people who look before runing lights though

Haha, seriously. Both times I got stopped for reds I looked first. I just hadn't yet gotten into the habit of looking for cars and THEN looking again for police officers
Really nice to see a police officer explicitly say "they get the whole lane, it's up to them to move to the left and say 'I'm slow moving traffic, move around me'" though. Wish it was somewhere more prominent in the website/paper though, but still. I think I will have it printed for when boneheads honk at me for not riding in the gutter.
