What tires do you use in the city? My Paddy Wagon came with Conti Ultra Sports on it, and I'll probably stick to those until they're damaged/worn out or I get tired of getting a hernia every time I have to pull the bead back onto my Sun rims. When the time comes, what should I get? I see Conti 4-seasons in front with Armadillos in back recommended around BF frequently. Is that just a fad or a legit choice? Is T.O. bad for flats? I had one my second day of riding, but I might have just been unlucky.

more like FALLS on wood. Ha!

that cross race looks like a lot of fun. i wish somebody would put on a SS MTB race in toronto (ie- in the don). nothing to official or organised, just a bunch of fun and beers after type or ride.

i use the conti ultra sports with no problems; winter, summer everything. if you're into cheap and cheerful, MEC has them for sale for something like $14. if you want to spend a little more money i really like IRC Durotours; they last a hell of a long time and have a nice enough grip to them. urbane hasn't had them in the last while, but when they do i pick them up for $25 or so. i don't like to spend too much on tires (or any part that's designed to wear out for that matter: chains, bar tape, cables, etc).

where did you pick up those GR-9s?

PS - i saw pac designs new "mini" bag (it's still around 15L) at bikes on wheels today. anyone who'd like to donate $119.99 for me to buy one, let me know.

agreed sir pyzer. that build just make me angry. in fact, i don't know what's more offensive: the up-turned handlebars or the suspension fork. oddly, if it was an old schwinn le tour or something i wouldn't mind but on a $3000 track frame....[barfs in mouth]...

I think *we* could get a regular weeknight ride going... I keep reading about the Swobo boys' hijinx on their Wednesday night rides on howtoavoidthebummerlife.com. :)

I bought them from eBay seller "riderParadise" after I gave up trying to get them locally. $22 shipped. She still has some available, I think.

nice. I love how you keep bringing that back up (no pun intended).

jeremywhitehorn 09-20-07 08:57 PM

you know that pun was intended...

i would love a regular ride with hijinks; all i need now is a rideable MTB....

Whats wrong with the KHS? I thought you were going to make it an urban ss mtb.

jeremywhitehorn 09-20-07 09:10 PM

nothing wrong with it really other than it's way too small. i'd like to build a proper SS MTB and i can't seem to get that one working (ie - it seems the der hanger is stripped so i can't get a tensioner in there etc. i dunno, maybe i'll tinker with it next time i get a day off).

BTW - early congrats on the child-birthing and such. FWIW - refering to the wife as "shamu" in any context will resuly in weeks of sleeping on the hinterland of the sofa.

jeremywhitehorn 09-20-07 09:14 PM

BTW - wes, thank you for pointing me to that swobo page; i just read the best euphamism i've ever read for moustache: "the **** broom". wow, how offensive. i like these guys already...

Lulz.

At $27 a pop for PR2's, I use nothing else. Not so great for flat protection though. Michelin recently came out with the P3's. They dropped the race from the name.

Just Pro3 now.

i don't know - using the term "race" in a tire usually mean to me that it will be fast but puncture-prone.

i should have prefaced my tire preferences by stating that i typically ride nothing narrower than 700x28.

Here's the marketing blurb:

This year's Eurobike show saw the official debut of Michelin's new Proł Race clincher road racing tire, whose new dual-compound tread is derived from the company's Moto GP division. According to Michelin, the new central tread delivers 20% more straight-line grip than the Pro˛ Race, while the new shoulder rubber offers a whopping 40% improvement. Michelin says the Moto GP compounds are also more readily deformable than before to help maintain grip on coarser pavement and reduce rolling resistance. For added security, the Proł Race casing gains a new High Density Puncture Protector (HDPP) nylon belt, yet total claimed weight is still highly competitive at just 200g for the 700x23c size.

Michelin will offer just the Proł Race for now, but the family will eventually include an even lighter Proł Light model as well as an even grippier Proł Grip. The Proł Race will be found on complete bikes beginning in October, but won't hit the aftermarket until March 2008.

I ride 23c's everywhere. I actually got my first flat this season last week on the pro races. Stupid staple.

And check out these uphill only tires.

Glad this guy's ok.. I was riding the Queen streetcar home last night and we were diverted up broadview/along gerrard/down coxwell. I figured there was a fire on queen.. but it turns out a cyclist was pinned under a streetcar. Some dumbass tried to door him.. he swerved, and I assume he went down on the tracks.

*whew* thanks for posting that. We were pretty concerned how that was going to turn out (it happened just down the street from the shop).

If you want the hanger fixed let me know. I have threaded hanger inserts that fix stripped hangers.

We want to be on the road no later than 8. Race at 10...40 mins...If you need to be back asap I figure we could get back in town by 1.

somnambulant 09-21-07 07:07 AM

Score for Jeremy/K-Fresh.

ps. mtb ride Sunday afternoon. Be there, or be dodecahedronal.
pps. haw haw.. mike has to get up early! Just think, while you've got the pre-race jitters, I'll be enjoying delicious blueberry pancakes. \o/

canice 09-21-07 07:11 AM

wow. that sounds sickening. can't even imagine how terrifying it would be to be stuck under a streetcar.

So you can get out to the trails on Sunday but cant race because of "In-Laws"? *CoughSLACKERCough*
While you are choking down dry pancakes we will be revelling in the glory that is Cyclocross! May your syrup be Aunt Jemima and your blueberries be frozen!

hahahah.. yeah, they're leaving in the afternoon, which is why I'm squeaking in a ride after they're gone. And the syrup is real organic stuff and the blueberries are fresh. Both are sitting at home already, biznatch. :P

Trust me, I'd rather be out racing than entertaining them, but given the circumstances I'll settle for eating pancakes and giving Mike a hard time. :)
