I love it when people use that line.. especially when they call it a speed limit. If it's a "limit" then I figure I'm not obligated to keep up with it, only to stay below it. Ask them how often they stay BELOW the posted maximum. I'm going to guess it's not very often.

I've seen this posted before I think, so maybe someone has a link or file.. Basically what I'm looking for is the handy bits from the HTA regarding cyclist's rights. I guess I could look it up myself, but well...

What is it going to take to educate urban car drivers that bicycles are a relevant mode of transportation and we have rights on the road? Congestion is not going to get any better, and as it gets worse, people seem to be in even more of a rush to race home and watch Idol on Tee-vee. Every time I am confronted with some selfish jack-ass like that I lose a little more calmness and just want to pull these arses out of their cars and give em a beat down.
Total Wackness....its even sadder that he thinks you shouldnt be riding on the road unless you can do the limit...ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sounds like he needed a little u-lock justice

People are stupid, I just can't say it any more simply than that! Sometimes if I take the lane while riding I'll have people speed up and whip past me in the oncoming lane, only to stop at the stop sign 10 feet in front - usually nearly taking me out in the process. It's like people see a bike on the road and the part of their brain that controls common sense just shuts down temporarily.

Here is the Bicycle HTA Violations PDF

On a totally unrelated note: Some friends of mine recently worked on an Adidas themed Marinoni for the launch of the Montreal Adidas store that some of you may dig. There will be more pics I'm sure but I've posted up a few HERE in the meantime.

Well, they won't be rushing anywhere, luckily. I had a couple of chimps leaning on the horn behind me as I was turning onto the Danforth from Donlands. This with a) a car ahead of me and b) pedestrians using the crosswalk. They informed me I should "get out of the way". This is a bad corner to get right hooked and I've seen a few cyclists, generally after undertaking a car on the right, just about get hit so I tend to take the full lane for this turn. But they weren't going anywhere. There was a car ahead of me. So this is purely a proprietary thing, not a "hey I can't get to where I want to go because of you" thing. I was a little bent but then I realized that a) I enjoy being on my bike b) I don't pay ~$150 month for a car whether I use it or not c) I'm not polluting and d) I'm maintaining a modicum of fitness. I win.

And don't worry about phone in comments on CBC. Those things are like internet forums except it takes less intelligence to operate a telephone than a computer.

Yeah, it has been kinda crappy for me lately too, I know how you feel.

A couple of weeks ago a very aggresive cabbie was crowding me along Queen West. He was trying to get past the streetcar but wasn't giving me any room so I sat in the center of the right-hand lane, making it impossible for him to pass the streetcar. My logic was that this guy didn't care about my space, so why should I care about his, especially when he will squash me if he tries to pass the streetcar? Eventually, when it was safe, I gave him the lane at a red light and he passed the streetcar. He didn't seem to be very pissed at me, he probably just figured I was a crappy cyclist and didn't know what I was doing, blocking him like that.

Another cabbie, another day, same street, Queen, just before Spadina, a person flags down the cabbie and then for some reason, they don't get in, so he starts to slowly come back into my lane, nearly cutting me off. I slapped the rear window of the driver's side and yelled "Where's your signal?!" and he stopped the car, flipped open the door and started screaming at me about how I shouldn't touch his car. I was pretty surprised because it was a gentle slap, I just wanted him to know I was there. The funny thing is that he claimed that he had signalled and that I just didn't see it. I usually just ride on because there was no harm done, no laws were broken, the guy was being a jerk but what do I care? But this day I felt like yelling so I yelled back at him about how he should be more aware of his surroundings and that he is in control of a large piece of metal, he should be a lot more responsible because a less aware cyclist could have been hit. During this fracas, a construction guy comes over and starts yelling at the cabbie also, saying that he saw the whole thing and that he didn't signal and then a woman who was in a car stopped, got out and said that the cabbie didn't signal and that he was a dangerous driver.

It was pretty great really, three of us yelling at this cabbie, telling him what a bad driver he was. His cab was in the middle of the street too and the streetcar couldn't get by and the driver had also seen that the cabbie didn't signal, he yelled out of his window that he was calling his supervisor to report the cabbie. Like I said, this crap doesn't usually phase me but that day I just felt like yelling. The whole situation was going on into the 5 minute territory and I was going to be late for work so I told the lady and the construction guy that there really was no point to this as no laws were broken as it isn't illegal for being a jerk. We all three quieted down and we were going to leave but the cabbie then said:

"Where is your signal then? Cyclists should signal too!" and I said:
"Didn't you see my signal?" and he said:
"What? No!" and then I said:
"Here is my signal!" and I gave him the finger.

It was a good moment and the construction guy started swearing at the cabbie and the woman left as I think she felt uncomfortable about the swearing but I thanked her for stopping and I shook the construction guy's hand and thanked him for coming to my defense and I continued on my way to work. I was in a great mood after because sometimes you really think you are alone out there but those 2 people who helped me out made me think that not everyone in this city sucks.

Oh, yeah, the cabbie was on his phone the entire time, from when he went over to the curb lane for the fare to when he jumped out to yell at me to when the other people joined in to yell at him, he never got off the phone. It was a weird experience, all around.

Cooks:

Is grape jelly acidic enough to just jar and put in the fridge, or do I need to process it in a water bath and then store it in the pantry?

That's fixed gear grape jelly, btw... just to keep on topic

I think I'd like to take you up on that bet!

There are a few details that when you look closely seperate the Marinoni's from other bikes in the same class (Bianchi Pista Concept, Fuji Track Pro) - the cutaway on the seat tube is a prime example - you can just tell that more effort / skill was put into it than on either of the other aforementioned bikes.

With all that said, for some reason I've always been under the impression that the Marinoni's are made in Quebec but I could be totally mistaken and they may, in fact, come out of some overseas factory. Can anybody either confirm or deny?

Edit - seeing the two side by side, they certainly do look similar! The head tube, seat tube, dropouts and fork are obviously quite different.

Some guy tried to beat the crap out of me for doing that while riding in the bike lane on Harbord (right across from The Bike Joint) earlier this year. Beware the psychopaths!

This has been bugging me for so long now. It's incredibly frustrating that the people actually making an effort to fix things are THE bad guys. But as long as we live in a society that teaches you that you can simply make a $99 purchase online to offset all the damage you've done to the environment for a year, we're fukked. Or as long as police fail to do their job when it comes to anything other than a motorized vehicle.

Hah! I was thinking the same thing when I came in. Amber and I talk all the time about how back in the "olden days" you used to know anyone with a ton of tattoos. But now that's so common that sense of the small community has drifted off and we were both saying how we miss it. Now when we're walking anywhere, we run into bike friends - even Amber who doesn't ride outside of commuting! Bike friends are the new tattoo friends!

That's amazing dude! I felt similar after getting hit a couple weeks back. I was really surprised and impressed with how many people jumped to my aid. I totally didn't expect that after all of the driver bullsh you deal with on the day to day. Makes you remember that there's people in those steel boxes. Sometimes they just feel like angry robots.

Alright.. back to powerpointing *cringe*

Yeah, I never touch anyone's car, I really think people feel it is an extension of themselves and feel offended if you mess with their car. I guess that is why the guy freaked on me but I figured a reminder that other people are on the road with him would be a preference over squashing a cyclist.

It's funny how they freak out when you touch the car... but seem unconcerned what damage a cyclist and his bike might cause to the car if they were to hit you.

Many people believe that a car is rightfully an extension of their genitalia. You gotta admit you'd be a bit perturbed if any folk here rode up and casually began touching your penis, if they slapped it you'd be real upset. Moral of the story, don't slap a stranger in the dick.

two things:
1. i think my boss blocked bikeforums.net, because it won't load on my work computer anymore. a sad, sad day.
2. while we're all trading driver horror stories, here's mine: on my sunday ride, i was riding north on vic park to lawrence. street was totally empty, no cars in either direction. my friend is drafting off me, and we're cranking up a hill when i hear a rev coming from my left. a white k-car roars past (as roaringly as a k-car can roar) and out of the open window i hear the driver screaming something i can't make out. he brakes hard about 50m ahead, turns right into a strip mall with the butt end of his car still on the road. he waits til we're just passing his car, and he screams at me, "learn how to bike you ****ing *****."

we carry on our merry way, and not 100m later, he buzzes us even closer this time, laying on his horn. scared the ****ing **** out of me, and for what? i wasn't even in the middle of the lane. the ways some people spend their beautiful sunday afternoons...

1. I thought the same thing when it stopped working for me but I can gain access to bikeforums through IE at work, just not using Firefox. At home, I can use either browser and it works just fine... I've never been able to explain it and I didn't bother asking my IT guy... I just live with opening a different browser when I want to check out BF.
2. I wish I was there... ****ing idiots...
