Can't match the Cervelo with basket, but for second place I am working on getting a child bike seat onto my Mountain cycle dirt jumping frame.

That sounds cool. Just make sure the little one is wearing a helmet and armour when you are jumping.

Now just wait a second there. Your kids are too important to carry around on a rigid frame.

Here, this is more like it:

I may be a roadie, but why is there two sets of chains on this bike?

Flimflam 03-13-08 10:01 AM

cavernmech, any help needed from a willing volunteer for any CPs? I'd love to help and check it out (being as I'm not qualified to run in that one :p)

Hmm.. I've never seen one of these before, but it seems pretty clever if I understand correctly. It looks like if there was the usual configuration, the large amount of travel in the rear could cause big changes in tension.. but by running the mini chain, you put the long chain directly inline with the rotating part.. i.e. it's just a rigid rotation when the "rear triangle" moves, with no changes in slack.

shapelike 03-13-08 10:42 AM

Yes.

Who did Hairshirt last year? I watched the movie Run Fat Boy Run (great movie) last night and I got inspired to make some goals for riding this year. I'm considering Hairshirt, but I would like to know how much training people did. Plus their experiences in doing it.

Mitch (and I think his bro, Chris) from Cycle Solutions did it a couple years ago. Jeremey Whitehorn has done it before as well. Might be worth doing some rides with the randonneurs (http://www.randonneursontario.ca/) to prepare... and just ride ride ride. Basemiles are your friend. :)

anyone have any ideas where i get one of those grease injector thingys...
need to put grease in my pedals...

Flimflam 03-13-08 01:10 PM

I'm doing the Hairshirt this year as well - not done it before, only ridden there and back in two seperate days which I did twice last year. I'm not really training specifically too much yet, just trying to keep mileage up - I need to work on my personal routines before cycling. Feeding, resting and stretching being my main focus of improvement for now.

Doing just my transportation riding I'm doing around 160km a week right now. I've been tracking it less than perfectly as I don't have a computer on my fixed conversion (which I've been favouring in the snow/slop), but it seems around 160km is average in any given week so far.

I'm also planning to join the Randonneurs for some rides this year (at the very least, I want to do Mean Streets this year).

Somewhere in the neighbourhood of 350mm. Or longer if such a thing exists. I'll have to check what the diameter is when I get home, I forgot to measure it last night.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Haha.

Yeah, I think the most important things (besides your strength/stamina/etc) on long rides like that are comfort, hydration and feeding. Make sure you've got your feeding situation worked out before you go out on a ride like that. All on-bike foods are not created equal, and what works for one person might cause explosive results in another. :) Kinda something you need to experiment with a bit. Ditto for sports drinks. I've never done anything that long though, so I can't give any specific advice!

iherald: how long were your days generally when you did the cross-Canada thing?

I LOVE photoshop.

I'm looking for a new/used square taper crank/ring for the MTB, the proprietary XT has given up the ghost.

I_bRAD 03-13-08 01:45 PM

What's wrong with it? Dibs if you don't want it anymore!

TRaffic Jammer 03-13-08 01:59 PM

Well you know the ring is loose. They tried to tighten it at CT and no joy, I'm afraid it's pooched.

I love finding gems when I use the search function.

I just stripped the rough yellow paint off a mariposa fork for the cyclops. I bought aircraft paint stripper and am now regretting every min for allowing that shi into my environment. It worked far too well. I chose that instead of the good ol elbow grease, because I thought that there would be mint chrome underneath. The chrome is nice, but had been prepped for the primer and is covered in minute scratches. None that you could feel with a fingernail.

Some say you can't buff chrome, others say you can. Has anyone here made chrome mint again with polishing? This is option one. The other option is to prime it and paint it with the matching paint (off white) that I had made to touch up the repaired dropout. Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone need a full can of aerosol paint stripper?

We have some nice NOS cold forged Suginos for a reasonable price. 175, 94bcd. I am running a set on the SS and love em.

I just realized that Hairshirt and the 24 Hours of Summer Solstice are the same weekend. I'm not happy. I was hoping to do both, but since I've committed to a team for the 24 hour, I'm going to have to do that.

Whats the turn around point for that ride? I know it leaves from Square 1 but do they turn back in Niagara on the Lake or Niagara falls?

It's a looped route, rather than go there, turn around, come back. It goes past Hamilton on Hwy 5 IIRC, then hooks a bit deeper into the Niagara region, goes to the ... West(?) end where Welland, etc. are, then goes all the way up the Niagara Parkway through the Falls and around NOTL and back to Toronto. I didn't ride the full "going there" route, but rode from the Falls using their route - all was nice and well. Both times I went out there for fun I used the same basic route to both go and come back as the "coming back" is on the link below. There are some killer cherries at Cokers Lane/50 Rd (right before the escarpment climb, too!) or if you catch it later in the summer, pears :)

I still have the basic cue notes I made based/copied from the hairshirt route online: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dff3tbwb_4c8dgtx

The crate must live! Seriously, L'il Hauler gone grown up. Have you thrown those new Michelin tires on there yet?

it goes all the way to niagara falls and if the day is hot enough you can let the mist cool you off...

jeremywhitehorn 03-13-08 11:08 PM

well i guess iherald isn't riding the hairshirt so i needn't impart any wisdom about it. i'd love to do it again this year but i fear i haven't put enough training miles in yet. in my experience you should be able to do a 100km ride painlessly by mid-april if you don't want to suffer. or be mitch. either one... joining the randonneurs is a good idea as they will teach you to ride sensibly and know your own pace.
if there was enough interest in riding as a group i could be motivated....

94 is the last gen 5 bolt. Rings are still pretty easy to come by. I set mine up with 2 ENVY DH rings as I am only using em for SS. You can still get ****mano rings and most of the aftermarket ring makers still make em in 94.
