If Nestor is working anywhere, he's another builder I'd never hesitate to recommend. I tend to recommend builders rather than shops and these three guys are ones whose work I've seen or owned and would recommend.

+1 on Keith/John/Nestor. My cross wheelset that Keith built is holding up like a champion, and I ride it offroad (including in the Don). That's gotta be saying something for a lightweight (dt 240s laced to open pros with dt super comps) road wheelset. :)

shapelike 06-20-08 05:20 AM

Nestor is a busy bee working for Tony B. these days, so no wheelbuilding from him.

+ 1 on Keith/John ... you've got to take into consideration rider weight, riding style, expected use, budget, strength vs. weight considerations and then actually build the wheels properly (stress relieve + tension balance + true). There's actually a lot to do right. Some of the discount wheelsets out there might have decent parts on them but the skill just isn't there for making it all come together and last.

all this talk of wheels reminds me that i should get that iro hub i bought off pyze built up...

I saw this thread over in the Framebuilders forum; a very very very nice Canadian-built Naked bike with lots and lots of photos:

I sold my car last week, it is really nice not having to worry about parking fees, gas prices or some ding-dong smashing into it anymore. I don't think I will need a car for a very long time to come, it rules.

jeremywhitehorn 06-20-08 09:45 AM

very cool - the fancy lug work reminds me of hechins frames...

It's official, I have to sell my IRO. ;)

Nestor doesn't work in the bike business anymore so you can ixnay that. Unless you know him personally or he's opened up some underground shop I haVen't heard about.

From my limited experience, its good to find a local wheel builder that you trust and can speak with face to face. There's a lot implied when people meet, including the ability to "size up" - for lack of a better term - what someone really needs out of a wheel vs. what they think they want. I'll also give a shout out to La Carrera for building me what has amounted to a very reliable wheel for my fixie. Also, John at Cycle Therapy turned around a rather disappointing rim I got in a wheel set from an online builder; I thought the rim was done, but he managed to make it perfectly ridable again.

operator: you're an underground shop.

I ended up going to Urbane today. They have a bit of a wait list, but I'm brining my bike in on Wednesday morning and picking it up later that day (+1 to same day service). It's costing me $200 but I'm getting what I hope will be a good set up. And just in time, too- I took my longest fixed ride yet, 20km, today, and now my back wheel is actually a little loose. Is it possible for a wheel to be so untrue that it loosens itself? :S

jet sanchEz 06-21-08 11:03 AM

Maybe the spokes are not tensioned properly? Do you think Urbane will be able to take a look at it and see what the problem is? It is always nice to have a backup wheel. Even if it sucks it sucks less than TTCing it.

2wheelsgood 06-21-08 02:24 PM

hello everyone,

i have pleasant news. My bike(s) were stolen out of my garage today. so be on the lookout for a grey '05 specialized langster that has been taped up to hide all of the logos. there's 3 spoke cards in the rear wheel (1 from charlie's memorial ride, one from the colnago race last fall and one from toby's halloween race) it has bullhorns with a black and white diamond pattern and crappy looking silver pedals with black plastic clips/straps. the saddle was a black brooks b17 with copper rivets on a carbon pazzaz seatpost. my other bike is/was a stock white norco kokanee mtn. bike.

if you see anyone with these bikes please promptly kick them in the balls and then phone me (416)629-3527.

2wheelsgood 06-21-08 02:31 PM

p.s. i'm now entirley bikeless. 2 mtn. bikes, 1 beater and 1 track bike have now been stolen from me in toronto in the last 5 years. awesome.

jet sanchEz 06-21-08 02:35 PM

That sucks, my eyes will be peeled.

I have a question that maybe some of you folks can help me with. A friend of mine has limited use of the left side of her body and would like to get some exercise other than walking. She used to cycle a lot but her injury (SCUBA-diving related stroke) has made it impossible to continue cycling. I think that a three-wheeler might work for her but they are rather large and cumbersome and will entail a lot of work getting it in and out of her apartment, meaning she could not go out for a ride alone or on a whim. I thought that there might be some sort of adult training wheel setup but I cannot seem to find one online.

Has anyone here got any good ideas about this situation? She can drive and operate a car no problem but a bike is a lot more fun, right?

cavit8 06-21-08 02:38 PM

Suxors. Sorry to hear it. I have a 58cm Raleigh Record fixed gear you can borrow if you need a ride.

2wheelsgood 06-21-08 02:41 PM

oh yeah, full set of spin doctor brand bike tools were also stolen and a pair of sl eggbeaters with blue springs. ****ing cocksucking mother****er

That really sucks. If you have links to photos of said bikes that might be helpful, just in case someone spots something. I assume you're going to keep an eye on the usual suspects/craigslist postings. If you normally ride a 52, I'll see if we have anything used kicking around at the shop that would fit you. For new stuff we have some Steamrollers in right now and I can certainly give you the "make life a bit better" discount.

Hey Jet, checkout www.fatwheels.com. They have robust training wheels which will fit up to a 26" wheel as well as outriggers which will fit up to a 700. http://tinyurl.com/6ezvof

You can get a entry level trike for $1000. The problem with trikes is that

1) wide, always riding on the shoulder and into the lane
2) very very low
