Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Being tourists in Austin this weekend, doing some rides, eating some food, seeing some stuff.

Staying not far from this place. It's ok, but seems more of a tourist shop than anything else. I bought a t-shirt. That said, there are some cool tour bikes and what not on display.

I agree. It's some Italian company, if I remember right. The pre-buy was up there too, and it made no sense to go race crits on a bike that cost 3 times as much as the old November, which I was trying to "protect".

People eat bits of frogs all the time. Lewis likely knows that, and wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

Getting settled in. Neighborhood is still very much under construction, but nearing the end on our place. Did a pool/spa and adding an outdoor kitchen.

Riding this year has been a bit tough. The move and the crashy sorta got in the way of taking it too seriously... which is good in its own way.

the important thing to realize when dealing with so called "meat substitutes" is that its not gonna taste like that thing someones claiming it to be, because its not that thing, only that thing tastes exactly like it. it might taste similar in some ways but its its own standalone thing. once you realize that you dont end up disappointed because the tempeh bacon you bought isnt a crispy slice of bacon. if you wanted bacon, you shouldve bought some.

i think a lot of people get put off by visions of soylent green nightmares and "diet" microwave tv dinners, that and a good amount of america is spoiled by over-stimulating fast food (i.e. the five guys everyone had at work this afternoon that made the entire back room smell like food porn)

...more about emotion than thinking. Emotion as in, "I want it, I want it, I want it, I want it." You can't put a price on that, now can you ?

Survived the football game yesterday. Worst part was the traffic near the stadium. Kids did a good job singing the national anthem and we left at halftime. Now hoping to survive and enjoy a century ride with some friends/clubmates.

Did I miss anything while I was away??

Oh, the tailgate went fine. Some people actually ate the hummus. No facepainting, although I saw some fans with painted-on team jerseys.

But who would say that about a November? Sweet wheels, but frames were race bikes on a budget. Open mold with US customer support. $3300 missed the price point by about $2500.

Correct. You can buy carbon racing frames from the major brands, often for less money, at your local bike shop. Neighborhood customer support.

for a "touring" bike, it certainly is a lot of fun. im having a tough time deciding on a 10-42 sram setup in back or rohloff for bikepacking

As a cook, and I'm pretty damned good at it, I believe it's a big mistake to take an ingredient and try to approximate something else with it.

I've had some magnificent tofu, and it was exalted as it is for what it is...You need to go to the Asian markets for the great stuff...

It can have quite the character in its own right. The challenge with vegetarian cookery is that it is its own cuisine within many cuisines and it deserves the full attention of the cook, versus the Western mentality which relegates anything vegetable as a side dish...

I'm heavily considering the 10-42 CX-1 setup for a bike at the moment...

Rohloof is significant bucks & weight...but pretty damned impervious as I understand it...

If you're going to be "Out there," I'd go Rohloff...I've whacked way too many hangers and rear derailleurs.

agreed, it also takes a complex palette that likes experimenting with varied cuisines. eating a bowl of boiled vegetables isnt exciting

it helps to like indian food, since theyre a largely vegetarian culture

considering ill be loaded with a bunch of gear im not to worried about weight, the bike is already almost 30 lbs, the reliability and gear range it offers is great too

not too interested on being stuck with one gear after obliterating my rd on the CT, much less potentially trashing an entire rear wheel a hundred miles from nowhere

main deterrents for rohlof at this point is the (pretty much only option) being a twist shift that i could only put on the end of a drop bar, and of course the $

If you're bored and want to pick up a couple more cool bike shops tshirts, check out Fast Folks (their coffee is tasty too!) and Division 1.

I strongly agree that foods should be eaten for what they really are, not in a way to try to pretend they are something else. If you want to be a vegetarian, don't try to make the vegetables approximate meat. What is the point of that? Tofu, not tofurky or tofutti.
