We live with open windows, too, when we are at Lake Tahoe. But that is a rare practice on the Gulf Coast. Almost nobody does it who wasn't raised somewhere else. With central air conditioning being required for about eight months out of the year, one becomes accustomed to the low humidity, cleanliness, and low noise level that the fully air conditioned, sealed up house provides. One also becomes accustomed to the narrow temperature range of the air-conditioned house and tries to have that during the heating season too. Thermostats are much less commonly set back overnight in a centrally heated house than when I was growing up with floor furnaces. That tight range of 69-73 deg F is quite addictive and, for many if not most folks, it becomes preferable to letting the variable climate from outside into the house even in mild weather. When the interior temperature rises above 73 deg F, we switch to cooling. When it goes below 69 deg F, we switch to heating. I assure you we are not alone in our behavior with regard to home heating and cooling. We would set the same temperature for both, but we find that the temperature of the forced air makes a lower temperature desirable for the heating and a higher temperature desirable for the cooling. That helps a little with the power consumption.

Speaking of jobs and Texas I'm going to be relocating to TX (because I love it and the heat) at end of April. I work for a signage/branding management firm in NY as a project manager and I'm educated. Do you folks in Texas know of anyone looking to hire that needs someone for business development / project management? I like to take the least serious thread and turn it into serious. Send me a pm for c/v!

I think he originally said something about a post-MBA or something like that, so that means he was probably a business major. There's a reason that 1) The very good engineering school I went to also has a very good business school and 2) Why we called engineering "Pre-Business." We poked fun at the business majors a lot, but that was only because they had massive ammounts of time (and fun) and were generally showered and well dressed while us engineering folk were doing group study sessions until 1 or 2 a.m. when most business majors were just leaving the bars.

Brutal NY summers?? Texas, Florida and probably all the other gulf coast states are brutal. NY is a piece of cake by comparison.

I taught the computer drafting portion of the drafting class (the teacher was kind of a dinosaur and only taught the hand drawing portion) for 5 semesters. I usually taught two sections of 40 students, and I think there were something like 7 or 8 total sections. I think maybe 20% of those kids made it past the first two years. I was pretty lenient, but never hesitated to tell someone that if they were having trouble in that class, they were going to be absolutely destroyed by the classes in their second year. Basically a "Sure, I'll cut you some slack, but if you don't pick up the pace, you aren't going to see your junior year anyway."

We usually get by with less than one week per year, but we have a nice advantage of two mature trees that shield the house from the south and from the southwest. We're really only bothered by heat/humidity when it comes to sleeping, so we only run the AC during the day when it's apparent that it's going to be an uphill battle for our little cooling unit come nighttime.

Why are Strava power estimates so wonky? According to this morning's ride, I averaged 270 watts over 19 minutes on one segment. I just flat out know I suck more than that. My PR on that segment was 18.5 minutes at an estimate of 200 watts average. The difference is the bike. The Domane is 17 pounds and the Crockett is 21 pounds. I can't imagine 4 pounds accounting for 70 extra watts over 5.7 miles. I'm pretty sure I had rider weight entered correctly for both rides. I guess that segment is kind of hilly as well, but still.
I just need to get an actual power meter.

Houston is pretty bad. I complain about North Texas, but it's not Houston humid.

Too bad the place is kind of a dump.

Did I really need sarcasm tags? I live in Austin. it was 100* with not a wisp of clouds for five weeks straight this summer. On the other hand, I spent a decade in the Albany area without A/C. It was fine.

Whoa. I want one of these. I'm not sure how many tens of thousands of dollars this costs, but it could sure help clean up rusty, vintage, $3 tools.

See, that's not living life to me. I love the outdoors and I love BEING outdoors. If you gotta hide from it, then wtf!! Why do I want to be there?
