I love photography and cameras and taking pics. I've done all of my own photography on borrowed equipment and don't really have a good camera of my own, though.

But . . . how about this? If you feel the 50mm lens would yield the very best quality, take it only. Michelangelo always said that the art was hidden in the rock and that he merely liberated it. His art was one of subtraction, therefore. Let your 50mm--and its limitations and possibilities--be your rock! Take the images that the lens will allow you to take, concentrating on image quality--yes, at the expense of some flexibility.

I've always found this to be a fun challenge. Also, I'm an inveterate weight-weenie/minimalist and hated carrying around multiple lenses when I'd go out on photo shoots.

Good thoughts...up to a point. If I had FF, only the 50 could be a fun way to go. But with the crop factor, I agree with the other guys that it is just too long. Of course I could always supplement it with my IPhone. ;)

What's the best lens for photographing motorsports?

I do this quite a bit - hell, I've taken multiple trips to zoos with nothing but a 28mm or 50mm and gotten some great results - but limiting myself to a 75mm equiv on an underground trip that I'm not likely to take again? Wouldn't be an option that would enter my mind.

Back to photography. Refreshing. I understand none of it.

But, the question is, is it a step above music theory for you?

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM?

I'm really only familiar with Canon lenses.

Hey, I'm agreeing with you. I just want the 50 for its speed in case that is needed.

Ah, okay. Keep in mind that the speed advantage isn't necessarily as big as you think it might be, 'specially compared to the wide end. You've got a two stop advantage in terms of aperture, but you can probably make up at least one stop or more via shutter speed (following the loose 1/equiv FL rule of thumb), even factoring in the IBIS, so it really comes back to whether or not the FoV is what you want given the subject. But yeah, no reason not to pocket the 50.

I'm attending grade school today, not for learning as some people might expect but for Grandparents Day. :D

:(

I don't know Chad Young, but the teammate of his that was involved in the crash, Edward Anderson, is from here and I've ridden with him a few times. He just signed with Hagens Berman and I think this was his first stage race as a pro, it's gotta be horrible to go down and have one of your teammates not survive.

Thoughts with Edward and the family of Chad, bike racing has been pretty tragic lately.

Awful.

Camera lenses are cool because you can pay more to go faster, unlike bikes.

Unfortunately, yes.

I expect it to be cool in there too, so a light jacket with pockets will probably be in order.

What part of the Alps do you live in?

Just misses the Wonderlick at 25, exceeds the 60% nicely at 68%,

But 13 College starts is a huge red flag, based on history.

It's a gamble. But Pace and Fox know this is their last Bears draft if something optimistic doesn't happen. Drafting Solomon Thomas was what I expected, but Trubisky has more appeal for general optimism. The Bears won three games.

They gave up too much. So it goes. I do appreciate how covert Pace was - no visit to Halas Hall, no workout, no communication. The Tribune and Sun Times weren't even close.

...but then you learn that faster isn't necessarily better, unlike bikes. I mean, it's nice to have the option, but damn if it ain't obvious from the only-one-eye-in-focus portraits that someone's new to, and newly infatuated with, fast lenses.

I dunno why I'm taking the time to clean up the bike two days before a rainy gravel ride, but there is something satisfying about scraping the toejam off of jockey wheels.

Speaking of lenses, my all-time favorite is the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM. It is a fantastic lens for portraiture but also very flexible. I took this in southern California with it a few years ago in Long Beach, CA:

My bike is a total mess. No rain rides, but plenty of morning dew and road crud coating everything. If I do this mountain weekend in May, I'll need to give it a scrub and probably fix some strange shifting issues most likely associated with a bent hanger.

Just outside of Markleeville. Do you know where that is? In the Tahoe area.

"A few years ago" is right, Team Disco! Haven't seen those colors in a while.

I was reading a thread in General Tso's forum where it was made clear that faster is not necessarily better in bikes as well.

Yeah. I think at this point we should stop talking about lenses altogether and start recommending which instragram filters and hashtags he should use.

I put the bike up on the Aldi stand just to test it out. "Since it's there," I thought, "I might as well pull the crankset and take care of that little crik-crik that I've been meaning to address..."

....and then it cascaded from there. Chain is kind dirty - let's soak it. Jockey wheels are yuk - let's scrape 'em, etc, etc.
