Where's the best place to buy Birkenstocks?

We walked past a Birkenstock store in Playa del Carmen on Saturday. I hadn't seen one in many years. We did not go in.

Doesn't Bridgestone make tyres?

If you go to the very bottom an look at the Banned Users thread you will get your answer.

I was wondering about that. The one above him... yikes.

There's something to be said for a full-suspension bike for people with back issues (which you have, right?).

I just didn't 100% follow why you had to have a hardtail even for fire roads. I ride my MTB on fire roads all the time.

I wrote a post about looking at Giant full-suspension MTBs, as they are a very good value. But I deleted it when you said you had to have a hardtail.

This is an excellent point. Thanks.

Interesting. Aero is everything for you, but for me, approaching the ripe age of 32, I'm looking for some additional comfort for when I inevitably delete my Strava account and switch to birkenstocks/backup barz. I think 28s at ~70 psi would help.

So, my 25s, which measure 27.5, I run at 90/85 psi.

Am I doing it wrong?

Not really my original thought process. When I was trying to choose a MTB, coach's take was very simple: anyone over the age of 50 or with pre-existing back problems should ride a full suspension mtb bike, even on fire roads. Its just easier on the body.

Its not like you're racing and need to maximize you speed when climbing. That being the case, why not be comfortable?

Depends. Are you a sleek panther or a lardball tabby?

LAJ 05-10-17 01:26 PM

My 24's fit on my 52's, and got me through the mile stretch of dirt on Saturday at 30 mph. That sucked sooo badly.

Mini survey-

How many of you have pinch flatted?

I feel like people always hand-wring about snakebite flats when they don't pump their tires before every ride. I've got about 6 year's worth of regular riding under my belt now, and I've never pinch flatted. I sometimes forget to pump for over a week and have run 23s at under 60 psi. I'm no lightweight either, about 180 lbs. I normally run 25s at ~80 rear, 75 front without issue, a bit more for races.

Am I just lucky?

Aero isn't everything.

Speed is everything. :)

One pinch flat, and it was on my TT bike a few weekends ago. It also sucked.

Oh I remember that story. A pothole like that will flat you regardless of pressure, I'd think.

Exactly. I don't run much pressure, but I don't sweat pinch flats at all. The wide rims help. But, you're right, as a John Deere would have flatted there.

I have pinch-flatted after hitting a pothole that was in shadows, I never saw it, on a fast descent.

I definitely pump up my tires before every ride. (Well someone does. Not me.)

So yes. I think you have been lucky.

In dog news-

Our pup's favorite thing in the world is chasing tennis balls flung by one of those little chuck it sticks. I hung a hammock in our yard a week ago, and she's figured out that the best way to get me to play with her is to just plop the ball directly under the hammock.

I can reach down with the chuck it and throw the ball without even sitting up. She gets exercise, I maximize my lounging. Win.

LAJ 05-10-17 01:41 PM

I slapped my Assaults on today after hanging on the hooks for a week, and they felt OK. Surprising, as among other negative traits of carbon, I'm sure leakage is another one. No matter that I run tubes in my tires.

Only time I've recently pinch-flatted was last year on a ride with RPK. I'd gotten a run-of-the-mill flat, replaced the tube, but (because of weenie micropumps) neglected to get it back above 70 or so. When we hit some construction gravel, it pinched.

seedsbelize 05-10-17 01:41 PM

Same. A pothole pinch flat a few months ago. Actually, it was a fist sized stone that I didn't see because I was dodging a pothole. I'm sure there were others, as I have been riding regularly for 57 or 58 years.

datlas 05-10-17 01:41 PM

I have pinch flatted a few times. One was clearly related to under-inflation plus a modest pothole. One was due to going over a well-camaflouged rock. And the other two or three were due to surprise potholes despite good tire inflation.

I pump my tires up once or twice a month. I do tbe thumb test before every ride.

Take it to the 50+ forum

Seriously- why would air leak faster on a carbon wheel? Isn't that purely down to the tube?
