Gloves maybe.

Upgrade path based on new and improved paycheck has been planned:

1. Cheap commuter bike plus any commuter gear I may require
2. New wheels for current bike, new BB/headset bearings
3. Possibly a new 5800 drivetrain to replace the 5700 that's gradually falling apart on my Madone
4. New shoes (does stiffness matter???)
5. Either a PM or a fancy camera. We'll see.

All of this comes after buying a series of nice things for wifey to butter her up, of course.

We both know the same guy! Seriously, the idiot bike riders I see/saw when commuting made me want to hide.

Find out if you can park your bike in office.

Keep work shoes in office.

Pants, polo, and undies roll and put in messenger bag.

I commute on the Evo or Allez.

That's a consideration, but unlike my current office I don't think they allow bikes inside. There is a covered and secure bike rack in the parking garage with security cameras and such, but I still don't feel comfortable locking up my main bike there. A $150 steel beater, though... that I'm ok with.

Edit: This is in my area, almost my size, and listed at $300. Would make a great commuter!

I don't think I'd like to commute in traffic with aero bars.

Also make sure the Soft beam is intact. If it cracks or the mechanism fails, I doubt you cna find a replacement.

But heck the Zipp tubulars are worth a good portion of the $300

That's what I did during my years of bike-train-bike commuting from Philly to NJ. Also kept some deodorant in the office along with a synthetic towel to wipe down on hot/humid days.

I am much closer these days, but I still have clothes in the office for when it's hot out and I ride in in shorts and a tee.

Has anyone else CX-ified a pure road bike?

What else should I swap?
Is the carbon fork ok?

This is the trail I'll be on... ruts and rocks.

Definitely not MTB territory, there. You should be fine. Concerns are going to be brakes holding up (probably fine), and any slipping you might get on sand/loose stuff. 30mm is still pretty narrow, but hopefully you can run lowish pressures to help.

I was kidding about that thing, just funny that it's the first result when searching for 60cm bikes in my area.

Where's the fence?

Dan333SP 05-10-17 09:50 AM

TIL there's a species of wildcats in Europe that are most likely the direct ancestors of housecats. They can also be pretty fat.

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy wrenching on bikes?

If there are Hallmark cards here, I haven't seen them. I doubt that we have greeting cards because no body uses the mail.

Is that a Garmin watch? If so, do you use the heart rate strap with it? And again, if so- do you find it accurate?

I ask because I've got a Garmin watch sitting next to my computer at home gathering dust and I'm not sure if I should invest in the HR strap to go with it.

Nice bike! Love the matching.

Trsnrtr 05-10-17 10:17 AM

Guilty, though he looks cuddlier.

It's a Garmin Vivoactive HR and doesn't require a strap. I have used as a bike computer before but not normally. It does seem to do a decent job as a bike computer but it doesn't auto-stop so if you stop for coffee, your average mph plummets. It does have GPS and everything so it uploads to Garmin Connect and then Strava. Comes in handy if I forget my bike computer but still want to record everything.
