I have not had good success "figuring technical MTB stuff out on my own". It's a HUGE advantage to go with someone who knows the features and how to get over them properly. It's certainly possible to do it on your own (how I figured out most things), but with an experienced person to talk you through it and then show you... you can often get it the first or second attempt.
There are often club "beginner days" for a trail or even just a section of trail that basically just do this. Ride along in a group to a tech feature, then have the expert go over the approach, lines, etc... and then everybody attempt it until they get it or quit. Then move on to the next one. There are also known cool members of the club you can always hit up for this kind of thing in a one on one ride. The two people I rode with are both involved with teaching mountain biking and I'm already pretty good friends with both from road riding. One is the guy who teaches MTB skills to new people in a local club- I just can't ever make those skills sessions because they're scheduled at times I work. The other guy used to be the local HS mountain bike coach and he taught MTB at the local college. We discussed lines to take through turns, how to get up and down steeper elements, how to ride little drops etc. We just didn't have tons of time to practice much and I had tired legs. So now I just need to go out a ride sections of the course. I'm sure that all I need to do is ask an either of them will come out with me again (and again and again as needed). I also have a roadie friend who I ride with multiple times per week- she has six kids and three of them mountain bike, she's an avid mountain bikers and coach for her kids' team and will go out with me I'm sure. Plus we have an entirely separate MTB group in town and I'm friends with some of those guys, and haven't yet tapped any of those connections. So I have access to plenty of help but not that much time to devote to it, I have to work it in around other stuff on my cycling agenda. It's all fine though, happening at a rate that is fine by me, given everything else I have on my plate. |

Funny side effect of lugging a big camera and bigger lens to a triathlon is being mistaken for a pro. Multiple times.
Plus side is, AG's new fledgling team loves the pics, and I actually got a few decent ones of her. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4272/3...24c0d349_c.jpg |

She actually did post here in Addiction, a few times, awhile back IIRC. I suppose too much risk of worlds colliding has kept her away.

No, she just has about zero interest in the concept of "forum". She's not that much younger than me, but slides much more into the social media for discussions instead of dedicated fora.

Riley had a play date at the pool with the neighbors golden doodle (also ~1 year old) Sunday evening. He is still nursing a play hangover.

Haven't shared a bird pic in a while. This one could be a future avatar, entitled "You're getting on my nerves, man"?
