An equally interesting collateral question: has 'social media' reversed the order of influence over linguistic change between 'speech' and 'writing'?

Some would argue yes on both counts.

English is a strange language, compared to many, in that we expect the written language to match the spoken language completely. That's not the case everywhere.

Maybe a short-term cold turkey period will knock down your tolerance. You just have to manage to not jump off a bridge in the meantime.

Ah yes ... the common loon -- a noble bird indeed:lol:

Don't go hatin' on loons - they're MN's state bird. Even if they weren't, I'd still think they're fantastic. Loved seeing them on camping trips, with the chicks occasionally riding piggy-back, and hearing their calls echo over the water.

I agree: the loon is in fact endearing, and that call is eerily beautiful. We don't have 'em much in evidence where I'm now living (biggish-city SW Ontario), but I certainly remember them in B.C. and they are all over the place where we spend the summers in New Brunswick.

Found these cheap on eBay. Buy before they disappear!

They're like $20+ship everywhere else.

This is me, goofing around as we came into Victoria:

There you go again, making me homesick! Great pic: Inner Harbour, w/Empress hotel, B.C. Museum, and left edge of provincial legislature buildings in view. I think I recall your describing that trip on here at the time?

I grew up right on the water, so to speak, about 35 minutes north of Victoria (Maple Bay), then lived/worked in Victoria after uni. Didn't leave until '91 or so. Can't wait to get back once I retire (economy etc. permitting -- that's the plan).

:)

Boats are full of practical learning opportunities and they encourage the skill set of learning to cope with the hand you have been dealt. Very good for kids, I think. Valuable lessons come left and right, of their own accord. All kids should be exposed to sailing IMO, if they're anywhere near water.

My chains all are black within a couple rides....

jtaylor996 06-02-17 02:52 PM

My new chain is a KMC X11L in gold. It did not come with a box, though.

Mine did.

I was cardboard, but still...

On the ground in Cancun, awaiting my bus to Merida. No electricity but, oddly, internet.

Everyone knows that the internet is majik.

Good you made it almost home safely.

The final bit of birthday swag I bought for myself showed up today (aka any number of things I recently bought under the guise of being for my birthday).

It's a Sram Red 22 mini group and will go on my pretty bike. Mrs. Herbie (MoF) immediately pointed out that this would make that bike incompatible with all of my wheel sets and that this was not to be a justification to purchase more group sets or wheels.

She is wise... if a bit of a buzzkill.

Mine did, too, but that was inside the padded envelope it was delivered in.

We owned a sailboat when we lived in Maine. But we had no money then. We bought the best boat we could afford but it still cost less than our current dinghy.

It was always sort-of sinking, had no instruments beyond a compass, an unreliable outboard with a no-better than 50% start rate, blown out sails and a terrible hull designed (it sailed like a turd).

We had tons of fun sailing that terrible boat though. We never got out of Casco Bay (which is fortunately huge). Man, we'd tear up the coast of Maine in our current, eminently capable boat. I would love to spend a summer sailing the coast of Maine.

Otherwise it's all SoCal really. My husband grew up here and he was a sea scout instead of a Boy Scout, so he's been sailing a long time around here. He had a sail boat when he lived in Hawaii actually, but that one was perpetually sinking too.

We had big aspirations for world cruising but now we're not so sure. We like the incredibly easy sailing here- no currents, mostly benign weather, negligible tides. If I wasn't so tied to work, I could see taking some time to explore the Pacific Northwest and Alaska and also Mexico.

Not so sure about jumping across the Pacific, the big problem being getting back. We might be inclined to pop through the Panama Canal first, explore the Caribbean and then head up the US east coast.

But that's all theoretical unless we win the lottery. Plus: no cycling.

I have never been to Maine but boat (sail & power) on the east end of Long Island. I have taken power boats up the Hudson and barge canal to Burlington Vermont. Lake Champagne is beautiful.

I'm sure there's someone on this forum willing to drop that kind of cash on a chain (and the box it's stored in).

I can think of one. But won't name names... :innocent:

Chain installed. Brake pads installed.

I'm officially a pro mechanic now. Send liquor.

All the wrench turnin' is due to biblical flooding going on right now. Couldn't even see the curbs on the way home from work. I hope it doesn't take all week for the trails to dry out, but it might. :(

jtaylor996 06-02-17 05:21 PM

Also, some ass bought that riding mower out from under me.

The captain of our women's elite racing team brought a few bottles of wine by the shop this afternoon.

Hey, topslop1, remember when I was telling you that if you're starting up on a downhill on a MTB and the saddle gets caught behind you it leads to epic crashes?

It's such a tiny simple little thing to get wrong... but every. single. one. of. my. worst. crashes. were this.
